Thus such chute is open at both top and bottom. In addition, a bar or web 20, preferably integral with the frame or chute 17 to reinforce the same, spans the side walls thereof at the bottom, having a rim or downwardly extending flange 21 intimately fitting the exterior wall of the chamber so that in combination with the flanges 18 no leakage can oclcgur through the joint of the chute'and cham- Said web or bar 20 has a slot 22 therethrough, one side wall 22 of which is inclined or cam shaped. The door or closure 13 is adapted to be manipulated foropening or closing by means of a lever or handle 23 pivoted thereto on a horizontal axis 23, the handle portion 24 being offset or angularly disposed and the other end 25 serving as a latch which is adapted to enter the slot 22, and due to the cam wall 22 of the latter, enabling progressive tightening of the door or closure, especially such as becomes necessary incidental to the wear on the gasket 14. The edge of said wall is preferably tapered as shown,
to aid in easy operation of the lever 23. Said slot at the opposite wall, has a depending lip 20 to reinforce the bar and guide the lever.
A pin 29 is carried by lever 23 and is confined between lugs 16 and engageabletherewith to limit the movement of such lever in opposite directions.
The machine shown is elevated or supported by legs 26 and a standard 27 whereby the chute is correspondingly elevated or raised above the floor or support. This arrangement accommodates any type of receptacle as at 28 removably arranged below and in line with the chute so that the latter may discharge therein.
hen the machine is in operation, the vegetables'or materials are pared or washed by the member 11 and coacting parts, as disclosed in the aforesaid applications, but cannot escape therefrom through the opening 12 as the latter is normally closed by door 13 and latched in that position by the engagement of lever portion 25 in slot 22. The vegetables or materials are adapted to be discharged by centrifugal force by the member 11 through opening 12 when the door 13 is open or raised as in full lines in Figures 3 and dotted lines in Figure 2. When said door is raised, it is impossible for anyone to insert his hands into the machine through opening 12 and risk injury thereto, by contact with the rapidly rotating element 11. The chute 17 also arrests any scattering of the materials, confining the same and causing them to fall downwardly into the receptacle 28. At the same time, upward escape of materials is prevented by the door 13 which thus performs a further function of closing the chute 17 at the top.
The angle or deflection of the handle 2% greatly aids in engaging and manipulating the lever 23 and closure 13.
It will be noted that the chute does not present any crevices or portions which will clog with material and be difficult to remove or clean and that the discharge feature may be kept sanitary at all times.
Further, it will be noted that the web or bar 20 not only reinforces the chute, but it provides an exceedingly strong means for 'coacting with the lever 23 in applying the requisite pressure with safety against breakage strains on the door and associated parts.
I claim as my invention 1. In a machine of the class described, a chamber having a discharge opening, a chute on the exterior of the chamber about said opening for engagement by material discharged therethrough to confine the same so that it will fall downwardly from the chute, a closure for said opening hinged at its top to the chamber, said closure being adapted to substantially close the top of the chute in its open position, an operating lever pivoted to said closure, lugs on said closure, and a pin on the leverconfined between the lugs and engageable therewith to limit movement of the lever in opposite directions.
2. In a machine of the class described, a chamber having a discharge opening, a chute on' the exterior of the chamber about said opening substantially open at the bottom, a bar on said chute across said bottom adjacent the chamber provided with a slot, a closure for sa1d opening, and a fastening member on the closure engageablegin said slot.
3. Ina machine of the class described, a chamber having a discharge opening, a chute on the exterior of the chamber about said op enlng and open at top and bottom, a bar on said chute across the bottom adjacent the chamber, a closure for said opening adapted in open position to substantially close the chute at the top, and a fastening means on said closure having fastening enga ement with said bar. b
4. In a machine of the class described, a
chute comprising a vertically disposed body generally of U-shape, a bar spanning the chute ad acent the bottom and open side thereof, said bar having a portion-interengageable by a closure fastening and on its surface within the chute being substantially unobstructed.
5. In a machine ofthe class described, a chute comprising a vertically disposed body generally of U-shap e, a bar spanning the chute ad acent the bottom and open side thereof, said bar having means to coact with a door fastening and having a depending rim at said open side. 'i
6. In a machine of the class described, a chute comprising a vertically disposed body generally of U-shape, a bar spanning the chute adjacent the bottom and open side thereof to reinforce the same, said bar having a slot to coact with a door fastening, and a depending rib on the bar at one side of the slot.
7. In a machine of the class described, a
