CARTRlDGE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part o Letters Patent No. 280,067, dated June 26, 1883.
To ad( whom it muy concern:
Re it known that l. Dixon/t. Mrm'nr. a eitizen ot' the lnited States, and residing at tlhieago. (ool\' eounty, Illinois, have invented certain new andusei'ul linprorennnits in ludiyidual tart ridge-l'oxes, whieh are t'ully deseribed in the annexed drawings` and speeltiration.
'lhe purpose ol' my invention is to provide means whereby eel-tain l'orms ot' eartridges. partieularly those ot greater length. may be eom'enientlyearriedabout the person without danger either oi' aeeidentally exploding or distortingl them. The former danger is yery eonsideral le when the cartridges are earried either loosely about the person or iueloset'l in a ease so t'ormed as to permit longitudinal moyement ot the eartridge, whereby the rap is liable to eome in forcible eontaet with the ease. and thereby eause explosion. lhe latter dit'- tieulty results from the t'aot that the ball is ot' neeessity so slightly seeured to the shell or ease that lateral pressure tends to turn the point ofthe ball t'roni the true axial line in whieh it should lie. Sueh lateral pressure and eonseqnentiiexu re or distortion is liable t o be eansed by the knocking of the eartridges against each other it' earried loosely in a box or poeket, and by the bending ot' the person in stooping when carried in a belt about the waist.
A further purpose ot' my invention is to at' t'ord proteetion to the eartridge against rain or dainpness and dust.
Another purpose ot' my invention is to pro vide, a cartridge-box which will hold and at'- l'ord the desired Security to eartridges ot' varying diz'nneters or yal-ying lengths. IV aim to seenre the eartridge against both longitudinal movement and lateral pressure and to cour pletelyr inelose it from the weather, and this l aeeomplish by means ot' the deviee shown in the drawings, rl'hereinF Figure l represents the ease elosed and eontainiug a eartridge. Fig. 2 represents` the body ot' the ease in longitudinal seetion with the eartridge inserted. Fig. 8 represents the eover in longitudinal section. Fig. t shows in longit udinal seetiion a slightly modified vl'orln of box.
AA is a eylindrieal shell, ot'light sheet metal1 l'orined in the usual manner t'ainiliar to brassv workers. open at the upper end and entaslant No model.:
for eonyenienee ol' applying the eoyer. At the lower end it is made tapering and preterably longitudinally eonrex. is shown in the draw ings, though the tapering portion may be strietly eonieal. the entire shape being sneh that the point olthe ball. entering this taperY ing portion otl the box tosueh depth as its diameter will permit. will thereby be held eeutrally in the box. The diameter ot' the body A above the tapering portion is sueh as to ae eonnnodatethe largest size eartridgedeslgned to be earried in it.
l; is a eoyer, also a eylilnlrieal shell ol'lnetal. t'ormed ot' sueh size as to tit elosely over the body ofthe box. and designed to be pressed down over it to greater or less extent, aeeordY ing tothe length ot' the inelosed eartridge. lts diameter is sueh as to admit the tlanged head ot` the eartridgeshell ot' the largest size whieh it is designed to earry. "lhe head ot` the eoyer Bisl'ormed withtheinteri( reoneayity. X. pret'- erably substantially heinispherieal, as shown. theheadoftheeartridgeshell, ot'whateyersize. being supported by its elreuintertaiee resting in the eoueave head ot' the ease, leaying the eap whieh (foyers the t'ulminate in the eenter ot' the head ot' the shell, (ret'erenee being had to eentertire cartridges, so eatlled.) i'ree l'rom eontaet with the end ot'the ease, andso t'ar l'rom it that no jar eonseqnent: upon earrying about the person ean eansethe eap to strike the end ot" the ease, and thereby be exploded. The form shown in Fig. t has a talse bottom, a, hayY ing a central eirenlar opening, p, large enough to reeeivo the point ot' the ball, and not large enough to permit' it to pass through, thus seryu ing the purpose ot'the tapering end u in the preferred t'orm shown in Figs. l, L', and S. The l'alse bottoni maybe made t'unoel-shaped` as shown by the dotted outline n. and in that ease the opening may be smaller. The true bottom and exterior t'orm ol' the box may then be straight', or the true bottom maybe omitted; but these suggested l'orms are not preferred, though i'or some l'orms ot' eartrit'lges they may be used.
For the purpose ot' earryiug shot-gun eau tridges, the end need not be tapering; but: the taper does no harm. eren t'or this use, and the box ait'ords needed proteet ion to the eap in the` shotgun eart ridge as in the ritle-eart ridge.
'lhe body and eorer ot.' they box tit elosel)r to gfether` and are designed to overlap and hind to sneh an extent that the two parts will torni a substantiallxv rigid eai e` thereby proteetint" they inelosed eartridge against tlexnre or distortion.
l pret'er to I'orni the body A. and the ease l5 with an annular bead. t', near the end, to assist the grasp ol' the linger` in removing; the cover from the body. The shape ofthe open end ot' the body ofthe ease being eut aslant, as de scribed and :Ahown` permits the rover to he easil)v applied. notwithstanding' that it tit` eloselv lthereto. Manit'estly it is not',` material whether the Cover or the body he eut aslaut; but for the better appearance I pret'er to ent the body aslant.
Yhen desired, the ease which l have described may he itself inserted with its eontained Cartridge in the eolnnion t'orln ot' belt.` wherein are provided pockets t'or individual eart ridges, the poekets in theholt bei ng adapted to my bor(r` and the box. as above explained, holding' seeurely eartridges ot' an \Y length or diameter.
Une advantage ot' n1 deriee in the t'orin shown is that, being' designed eat-h to inelo.-;e a single cartridge, the entire onantit) at an)Y time being' earried about the person ina)v he distributed so as not to he an einlarrassinent by uneouall;Y weight ingthe hotly. or requiring a speeial belt or ho\Y to eoutain them: but l do not eonline ni el|'to the use ol the lt-rietin thil l'orni, lor it is 1nanit`e t that an number ot' l neh boxel aS l hare dewrihed may he grouped together in a hox or hell. and that no substantial variation t'roin in'vinrent ion will l.- retlnired to so eoinhine or group then.
l elaint as my invention l. .-\rt.\li1ulrieal eartiidg'e-hox eon istingot two parts` adapted to lit the one within the other, one part haringlv a eonieal reife` lo re eeive the point ot' the hall. and the other part having ith` elosed end interit'rrl)v eont'ave to proteeti the eap. one ot' `mid part` haring; it.\`
2. As an individual cartridge-box, a e) linY drieal eaae haringV the tapering' elosed end o. eoinhined with a erlindrieal and elosel \titt ing;4 eover having' in it l head the interior eonea\it \A X. substantially as set t'orth.
ln testimony that l ('laiin the foregoing4 a my invention l have heret|nto.\et 1n \Y hand. in the presenee ot` two wilnemes. at thii-aeo. in the eonnt)v and State aforesaid.
