PALLISEJR, DECEASED SPEC'IFICATION; forming part ot Letters Patent No. 269,100, dated Iilecember 12,1882.
I Application tlledAJuly 10.1881 (No model.) Intentodlu England June 2,1BBLNoL2Al5. i
Z'o all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JAMES L. NoRRIs, a citizen ot' the `United States, residing at Washington, i n the District of Columbia,am in p'os.
session of an invent-ion for a-new and useful Improvementin Composite Guus, invented by WILLIAM PALLISER, (for which Letters'Patent for Great Britain, No. 2,425,1lated June 2, 1881, were obtained by WILLIAM PALLIsEn,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thel construction of heavy guns, which may be either breech loaders or muzzle-loaders, as I will describe, referring to the accompanying drawings, Aot whicht A Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectionof a breechloader according to my inveutont l cast in steel a casing, O, which constitutes the external material of the gun, extending its whole length, and havingthe trunnions'cast in one 'piece with it. I thoroughly an'neal thiscasing, in order to equalize the strains resultinj'rom its cooling, and I turn it on the-outsi e and bore it internally nearly' to the diuieusions suited to receive the lining-tubes. As the removal of metal'by this turning and boring is'aptto disturb the equilibrium of the internal strains, I-y again anneal the casing', so as to equalizethese strains, and then; bya light cnt, tluish the boring to the required dimeusions and cut the internal screwthread to receive thelining-tubes. 'lhese tubes nre of soft iron, coiled, und arranged as follows: The inner lining-tube, A, extends from the muzzle nearly to the breech, and it is thickened externally near ,the middle o! its length, the thickened part terminating ln rounded sloping shoulders a b, the front one of'which, a. is ily inserting the tube from the breech, lbrought to lit a'correspondlng slop- -ing shoulder in the horep't' the casing. The
hinder shoulder, b, is nearly in line with 'the front ofthe trunulons, and against this bears the outer lining-tube, B, into which the inner tube, A, is introduced'lrom the front. The tubes A und B are together introduced from the breech into the-casing O, and screwed in untl'the front shoulder, a, of the A tube and the rounded sloping end ofthe B tube bear re- 'spectively against the shoulders in the casing. It is to be understood that' the A and B tubes are no t made a tight -iit to one another or to the easing, as is us'uallydone by shrinkingthe one part over the' other. 0u the coutrary they are made an easy it at.first,.and
then, when the gunisused, the tubes beingy of comparatively yielding material, are touI certain extent expanded by the pressure offthe powder-gas, and are thus caused telit closely. .When thegnu isrto be used as a breech loader the breech is arranged as shown in Fig. 1. A short outer tube, D,-with a concave face, is screwed up against the convex end of the B tube, aud within the tube D a short inner tube, E, with a projecting lip, is screwed iu,ts lip extending over au internal lip formed at'the end of the A tube, so thatthe joint of the two tubes is .thus covered. The tube E is screwed internally and coned out at the mouth to receive the removable breech-plug drawings, folding back on a hinge, or of any 'When the gun is tov b used as a muzzleloader the breech is arranged as shown iu Fig. 2, the end of the A tube having screwed into it a plug, B, which is cupped, so as to act as a gas-check. A short outer lining-tube, D, with a concave face, is screwed. up against the convex end of the B tube, and into ,this tube ls screwed the breech-plug G, with its i'ace bearing against the cupped plug H, and extending partly onto the end of the' A tube, so as to cover the joint. l In orderl to steady and secure the A tube at the muzzle, a-eollar or ring, P, is screwed into the mouth ofthe casing up ugainsta shoulder ot the At'ube.
Having thus described the nature of thls'invention and. the best means I know of carrying it outnin practlce,1 claim- L ,Ehe composite gun herein described, con'- slstlug of thc exterior oastfsteel casing, U,- hav-A ing the interior sloping shoulder, the coiled F, which muy be ofv the kind shown in the t other suitable kind.
