Description

Patented June 26,1883.
J. W. BRADLEY.
VALVE MEGHANISM.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN XV. BRADLEY, OF STBATFORD, ASSIGNOR OF'ONE-HALF TO THE BELKNAI MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONN.
,VALVE M ECHAN'ISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,011, dated June 26, 1883.
Application filed January 23, 1883.
To a/ZZ whom tm/ay concern:
` Be it known that I, JOHN W. BRADLEY, of Stratford, in the county of Fairfield and State Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valve Mechanism, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
anism, showing the bottom part in elevation,`
and Fig. 2 is also a similar central section of the shell, but shows a section of the valveplug, taken at right angles with the section shown in Fig. l, and within the plug is exhibited the hinge-valve in plan.
Referring to the letters upon the drawings,
A indicates a shell provided with a central transverse opening, B, for recelving a stop cock plug, and having upon either end a screwthread or other suitable or ordinary means for making pipe-connections. t
C indicates a stop-cock plug provided with transverse openings D for permitting the passage of steam, water, or other fluids in the usual way. This plug is fitted andsecured in place, and provided with means for turning it in any ordinary or usual way, so that it may present its transverse openings D in line with the pipe-openings inthe shell, or be turned to present its side to the pipe-openings, and thus permit or prevent the passage o'f gas or liquid. As described thus far, the device presents no (No model.)
form of valve may be employed within the.
hollow plug. Thus it will be seen I provide a combined stop-cock and check-valve in one; and it will further be observed that my checkvalve is capable of operating in either direction, because when turned so as to be opposite and adjacent to one pipe-connection it will permit a flow in one direction, and when turned half around, so as to be opposite and adjacent' to the other pipe-connection, it will permit a flow in the other direction. Thus I am enabled to transfer iiuids from one receptacle to another and back again withoutproviding separate and independent means for the two purposes, which is a great economy.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is .l
The combination of a shell with openings through it on the same plane, and the hollow stop-cock plug 'with openings through it on the same plane with the openings in the shell, and provided with a check-valve, substantially as set forth, whereby iiuid may be passed in either direction, substantially as set iorth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 19th day of January, A. D. 1883.
