Claims. (Cl. 15-137) Thisrvinvention'relates to a dispensingdevice and more Vparticularly to a dispensing devicel particularly adapted to dispense measured quantitiesof a plastic material.
It isV thegeneral` object of this invention to produce a new and improved dispensing device of the character described.
fWhile it will be clear to those skilled in the art that thev-dispensing`device of this invention has many applications, ithas been found to be particularly useful when used for dispensing dope used by plumbers for coat ing the threads at the end of a pipe before screwing It has heretofore been common practice for Aa plumber to carry a can of dope as heproceeds with his work and to dispense the same from lthe can by means of a stick or paddle which is used to apply the material to the threads of the pipe. The particular plastic material or dope used yhas `a tendency to-dry out if allowed to remain for any length of time in an open container and the previous methods of applying the material have been wasteful and in many cases quite messy.
According to this invention, however, there is provided a dispensing device which may be used for dispensing desired quantities of 'such pipe'iitting material. One of the features ofthepresenty invention is .the provision of a-dispensing device'which is simple to operate and will dispense desired-quantitiesY of -plastic material without waste or mess. 'Another feature of the invention is the provisionl of a-dispensing device which retains a supply ofeplastic dopeormaterial in an air Afree chamber so that the same--may-be used over long periods of time without drying up.
A more specific'feature of the invention is-the provision of ya dispensingY device having a-chamber adapted to contain a supply-of theplastic material together'with means in theehamberfor-producingan expellingpressure von the materialand-means accessible exteriorlyv of the chamber for-operating ythe pressureproducing means, with the last--namedfoperating means being provided with a ow passageway through :which the expelled mate- .rial may ,travel to the exterior ofthe chamber .for application to pipe threads.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a casing having a cylinder therein in which is located a piston movable to apply an expelling pressure on a supply of plastic material in the cylinder, with the piston being provided with thread means engaging threads on a hollow rod extending axially through the cylinder, the rod having a portion exterior of the cylinder provided with a plurality of slits through which the material is extruded when the rod is rotated to move the piston in the cylinder.
A further feature of the invention is to provide a dispensing device of the type described in the preceding paragraph wherein the cylinder is provided with a readily removable closure so that the same may be resupplied with the material and in which the orifices through which fce `Athe material is finally extruded may be closed by la slid ing sleeve which serves to cut off or remove any excess material on the exterior side of the orifices `and to maintain the orices closed when the device is not in use to prevent drying out of the plastic material.
Another feature of the invention. is the provision of distributing means for the extruded material so that the same may be evenly spread on a pipe joint, with such distributing means taking the form of a brush having bristle portions immediately Iadjacent the extrusion orices.
Other and further features of the invention will be readily lapparent from the following description and drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the dispensing device illustrating the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the device shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section along line 3 3 of Fig. l; and
Pig. 4 is a horizontal section along line 4-4 of Fig. l.
While this invention is susceptible of embodiments in many different forms, there is shown in the drawing and will herein be described in detail one specific embodiment, with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplication of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated. The scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a casing 10 having -a cylinder il 4formed therein, the bottom end of which is closed by a closure member 12. Inas much as the chamber or cylinder 11 is adapted to contain a supply of the plastic material to be dispensed by the device, the closure member 12 is Vmounted to be readily removable from the casing so that the cylinder 11 may be resupplied with material from time to time l14 serves to Adraw the closure member 12 up against an annular gasket 17 positionedV between the iiange 13 and the inner face of the closure member.
Simply by rotating the retaining ring 14 theiclosure may be removed to refill the cylinder.
VThe closuremember 12 is provided with an integral 4boss'20 at its center which is formedwith a cylindrical recess 21 rotatably supporting one end vof a rod 22 which extends axially through the center of the cylinder 11. The
portion2f3 of ,-therodwithinthe cylinder 11 is threaded,
as illustrated, withthe-,threads engaging internal threads --formed on a'backing-memberd 'forming apart-oa piston 25 whichismovable'in the cylinder. l'lhepist-on- 25 is provided -with a cover plateZt lsecured" t0` theebacking member by means of the screws 27 and simultaneously clamping therebetween a resilient annular gasket member 28. The gasket member is provided with inturned outer portions 29 which engage the wall-s of the cylinder and provide a substantially air-tight iit therebetween.
A step 30 is formed on the rod port-ion 22 within the cylinder adjacent the upper end thereon on which step is yseated a washer 31 adapted to abut against the upper end of the casing t0 prevent longitudinal movement of the rod. Secured t-o the outer portion of the casing is a bearing member 32 having an opening through which a second portion 33 of the rod extends, with the second portion being exterior of the cylinder 11.
The rod 22 is hollow, as indicated at 35, andthe poi-L" L tion 23 thereof within the cylinder is provided with a plurali-ty of openings 36 establishing communication between the interior of the cylinder and the hollow of the rod. The exterior portion`33 of the rodY `is provided adcloggedtafter a relatively long period'of use,,the screw 39 may be removedtand the hollow of the. rod cleaned out in a suitable manner. Y
iFor the purpose of rotating the rod 22 and'thus to cause movement of the piston 25, the exterior portion 33 ofthe rod is provided with a manually rotatable' disk 40 having i Yan integral boss portion 41 provided with a set screw 42 adapted to be tightened against the 4rod portion 33 so that rotation of the disk produces rotation of the rod and hence expelling movement of the pist-on. The device is so proportioned that by holding the casingr10 in one hand the thumb and foretinger of that hand can readily reach the disk 40 to rotate the `same and henceextrude plastic material from the slits 37. Thus the device can be operated simply with one hand while the other hand is occupied in holding thepipe or joint.
When the rod is rotated and the cylinder 11 is filled with plastic material the piston 25 exhibits no tendency to rotate with the rod, the plastic friction with the material in the cylinder being quite capable of preventing such rotation.
Preferably the tting 38 is provided with a second opening 50 extending diametrically through the screw receiving opening into which may be inserted an outer portion 51a of a brush 51 having .a wire core 51b which is spiraled around the outer end of the rod and provided with a plurality of bristles Slc positioned immediately adjacent the orifices 37 so as to receive material as the same is extruded therefrom. The brush serves as a distributing means lto distribute the material over the pipe lit-ting, threads and Vthe like. i Y
In order to prevent the material w-ithin the hollow of the rod from drying out, particularly in the area im-mediately adjacent the oriiices 37, there is provided a sleeve 5S slidable on the ex-terior portion of the rod and having a length at least equal to the length of the orices 37. The sleeve may be slid along the outer portionof the rod from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the Y orilices 37 are uncovered, outwardly to a position radially inwardly of, or under, brush bristles 51c'where in the oriiices 37 are covered. As brush 51 is secured only at the outer portion 51a such positioning is eectively unimpeded by the brush. Such outward movement of the sleeve accomplishes two purposes. YIn the iirst place it cuts ott any strings or portions of material extruded out of the orifices 37 and thus, in effect, cleans the Vouter end of the rod, and secondly when in position covering the oriiicesV protects the Ymaterial therein from the drying action of air and thus preserves the plasticity Vof the material even though the device is not used again for Vsome time. 1

2. The device of claim l wherein said closure member comprises a tubular sleeve on the rod reciprocable relative to said rod and said brush.
3. The device of claim 2 wherein the sleeve is longitudinally reciprocable on the rod and the brush extends is secured to the rod at one end only. Y
