LAUTER- BACH, a citizen of Hungary, and residents o-f Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Dispensing Liquid or Plastic Materials, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to devices for dispensing semi-liquid, liquid or plastic materials in which the material is contained in a reservoir and in which means is provided for effecting intermittent discharges thereof as desired.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simplified construction of such device including means to prevent escape of the material being dispensed into portions of the structure where its presence is not desired or would prove detrimental.
Other objects and Vadvantages of the invention will be pointed out in the detailed description therof which follows Vor will be apparent from such description.
For the purpose of enabling the invention to be more readily understood and its `practical advantages fully appreciated, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which we have illustrated one form of a convenient embodiment thereof. However, it will be understood that changes in the details of construction may be made within thc scope of the claims without departing from the invention.
As illustrated the invention is embodied in a shaving brush, but it may be employed and applied to and for other purposes and uses.

Referring to the drawing: 1 designates a brush, the upper or inner ends of which are Vheld in the annular space formed between the out-er or forward end portionsl of the members 2 and 3, the latter being situated inside of the former.
VThe forward end portion of the part 3 is in the form of a projecting straight tube lwhich is connected with the transversely extending disk 5 which is provided at its upper or inner end with an annular screw threaded flange 6. The forward or outer end portion of the part 2 is tapered as indicated, while the upper or inner portion thereof is clamped ixedly to and around the annular screw threaded iange 6 of the part 3. The parts 2 and 3 taken together may be defined generally as the head of the brush.
7 designates a transversely extending disk provided with a central forwardly and outwardly extending tube 8 which terminates in tapered walls 9 having a central opening 10. The inner surface of the tapered walls 9 form a valve seat for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The outer edge of the disk 7 is provided with a relatively wide flange-like portion, the portion 15 thereof adj aeent the said disk being screw threaded, while the upper and more inward portion thereof is flared as indicated at 16, and the said dared portion terminates in an annular cylindrical portion 17. At or about the point of connection between the flared portion 16 and the cylindrical portion 17, said flange is crimped or pressed into engagement with the peripheralouter edge of a disk 20 to hold the latter permanently in the position shown in the drawing. The disk 20 is provided at its center with a square opening having a iange'21 surrounding the same, which projects forwardly or outwardly. The said disk 20 is provided with a plurality of openings 22. In the construction as shown, there are three of these openings arranged at the corners of a triangle, but it willV be understood that there may be but one openino', or two or four or such number as may be desired and found to be practical. These openings are adapted to receive projections 23 upon a disk 24, said projections extending forwardlyor outwardly. The said disk is rotatably mounted upon a tubular, interiorly threaded fiange support 25, surrounding ank opening atthe center of a disk 26 (preferably of copper orV other suitable, relatively hard metal) which disk is situated inside of andincontact with the .disk 24 and retains the latter in position. The portion of said disk 26 adjacent the said flange is bent inwardly or .upwardly to form an annular space 27 be-V .tween the disk 24; and the disx 26 for the purpose of holding a lubricant. The'said disk 24 is provided with an upwardly or inwardly extending screw threaded flange 28 with which the inner or forward screw threaded end of a hollow cylindrical handle 29 is adapted to have detachable screw threaded engagement. The disk 26 is sup-V ported upon a dischargeftube 80 of Zine or 'other suitable, 'relatively lightmaterial,
which extends into a material containing reservoir or receptacle 3l, also of Vzinc or lthreaded flange is in engagement with the screw threads upon the cylindrical portion 33. At the .forward or outer end of the portion 33 a. flange is provided, from the outerV edges of which an enlarged hollow portion 35 extends, the upper or inner portion of which is square in cross section as indicated, while the youter forward portion thereof is cylindrical, also as indicated, and terminates in an outwardly, reversely curved flange 36 which forms a seat for the forward end of a coiled spring .37, the said spring extending around the enlarged hol low portion 35 and its upper or inner end being seated against the disk 20, about the flange 2l thereof. The upper or inner end of the discharge tube 30 is pointed as shown at 39 and is provided with an opening or openings as 40 through whichthe material to be discharged from the reservoir 31 enters into the said tube. 4l designates a tube in alinement with and constituting acontinuation of the discharge tube :30and being in effect a part thereof. The upper or inner end of said tube is provided with an enlarged portion 42 which extends into the forward end part of the hollow portion 35 and is secured therein by soldering or other wise. The forwardend of the tube 4l is tapered as indicated at 43 and vconstitutes a valve for opening and closing the opening contacts. lt will be seeiutherefore, that when the forward, screw threadedend of the handle 29 is screwed into the flange 28, it .will clamp the forward, outer surface of said flange against the disk 2l, sov that the handle, reseryoir 3l and disk 2l will` be caused to rotate as a Vunit in the operation of the device to expel liquid, semiliquid or plastic material from the reservoir. 1

The said opening is formed through a depressed port-ion of lthe said disk.V Such depression forms a space between the-central v portion ofthe disk Gland vthe disk 63 in which is seated or positioned a packing washer 68 of rubber or like material, the purpose Vof which is to prevent the liquid. semi-liquid or plastic material which may be contained in the upper closed end of the reservoirll from escaping through the open- Y ings in the disks 60, 63 and 6l around the tube 30, The opening through the washer 68 is of less diameter than that. of the discharge tube 30 and itis for that reason that the upper or rear end of the said tube is pointed as shown at 39. By so pointing the end of said tube it may be inserted readily through said opening.
The coiled spring 87 is in a compressed .state and by reason of the fact that its forthe disk A20, it tends to hold the discharge tube 30 in its forward position with the valveV 4 3 seated against the inner surface of .the wallv 9, so as' to close the opening 10.
When in such position the projections 23 extend into the openings 22 in the disk 20 as shown in the drawing.V lVhen it is desired to cause the discharge of material'froin the reservoir 31 through the discharge tube 3 0, the handle 29, together with the disk 24 and the discharge tube S-41, 'are pulled upwardly against the pressure or tension of the spring 37 so as toremove the projections 23 from the openings 22 and so as to open the valve 43. The handle, together with the disk 24, is then rotated toward the right. The flange of' the reservoir 3l being clamped between the forward edge of the l handle 29, and the disk 2a, it follows that the reservoir 31 also rotates' in the saine direction. The friction between the flanges 627a-nd and the edge of' lthe disk 63 and the inner surface of the reservoir 31 is such that the disks 60, 63 and Get rotate with the reservoir and handle. Screw threads upon the discharge tube 30 `and the flange 61 are so cut that rotation to the right causes upward or rearward movement of the piston toward the bottom or closed end of the reservoir 31. When the handle has been rotated through a partial revolution, the projections 23 are snapped or moved back into the openings 22 by the action of the spring 37, and if a greater quantity of material is desired, the -said handle, discharged tube, etc., are again pulled outwardly or away from the discharge end of the device to remove the projections 23 from the open ings V22, after which the said handle is rotated a further distance toward the right. The piston Vis thus gradually moved toward the closed end of the reservoir 31, so that ultimately the edge of the flange 65 contacts with the bottom or closed end of the said reservoir and in orderto prevent the said flange from being .forced up against the bottom of the reservoir `the screiv threads are omitted from a portion of the tube S0 as shown at T0, near the upper or rear end thereof. If the flange 65 were forced against the bottoni of the reservoir the force of rcaction might cause distortion of the disks 20'and 24 which are of thin material, rl`his result'should'be avoided.
In order to prevent the creation of a vacuuml in the space between the piston,
comprising the parts 60, 63 and 64, andthe d1sk'2et, when the saidpiston is moved to ward the bottom or rear. end of the reservoir,
we have provided small Vvent openings 7l, one of theisaid openings being in the bottom of the handle 29 while the other is in the side ofthe reservoir v31 at a point adjacent its upper end.
When the material has been discharged from a reservoir, it is'discarded and a new reservoir containing the liquid or plastic material to be dispensed is inserted into the handle. It will be understood that when a new reservoir is substituted for one which has been discharged, the piston is situated at the forwardv open end thereof. In the construction as illustrated, the piston has been moved upwardly or inwardly a distance suflicient tohave caused a discharge of practically half of the material originally contained in the reservoir 31.
It will be notedr that the cylindrical portion 17 surrounds the screw threaded flange 28. The principal purpose of this arrangement is to provide for neatness of appearance. VIt will also be noted that the upper or inner end of the member 2 contacts with the flared portion 16. This arrangement likewise is for. the purpose of providing a vneat and ornamental Iappearing structure or design.

2. n a device for dispensing liquid, se1niliquid andplastic materials, the combination of a. receptacle for the said materials, a dis charge tube extending into said receptacle, said tube being provided outside of said receptacle with` an enlarged portion, a disk having` a flanged central opening which is det-achably secured upon the said tube adjacent the enlarged portion thereof, a disk rotatablyY mounted upon the said flange and being situated intermediate the first named disk Vand the said enlargement, said second nan-ledy diskI bein-g provided with a f threaded lll) Vand having screw threaded engagement with Vthe saidl tube, and the said tube being provided `with an enlarged hollow portion eir-Y of a vreceptacle for the material, a threaded discharge tube extending into saidv receptacle, said discharge tube comprising an enlai'gedjportion situated outside of said receptacle, a piston having threaded engagement with said 'tube forforcing the ma- `terial from said receptacle through the said discharge tube, a disk having a central flanged opening, which disk is detachably secured upon said tube adjacent said enlargenient', a disk rotatably mounted upon theV said flange intermediate the first named disk and the said enlargement, and one of the` said disks being provided with a depression wherebythere is formed between the said disks a lubricantholdiiig chamber, the second named disk having a screw threaded flange, a hollow handle whichI incloses the ,said receptacle, said handle having an open end and the portion thereof adjacent the said open end being threaded for engagement with the screw threaded flange upon the second named disk.

In a device for'dispensing; liquid, semi'- liquid and plastic materials, the combination which the polygonal sidedportioii of said tube is situated and alsobeing provided. with one or more openingstherein situated. intermediate its center and its outer edge, a disk having an openingat its center provided with a flange which is detachably secured to the said tube. another diskhaving an opening at its center through which t-he seid central flange extends and onv which said disk is'rotatable, and the said rotatable disk being held in position ,by the disk secured to said tube andthe said rotatable disk being provided at its outer' edge with a threaded iange, and said rotatable disk also being provided with one or more outwardly prow Vjecting lugs adapted to engage the opening or openings in the first named disk, a hollow handle having an open end, the portion thereof adjacent such open end being threaded to engage the threaded flange of the said rotatable disk, means for effecting movement of the means Within the receptacle longitudinally ofthe said tu'be to cause the discharge. of material from the said receptacle through said tube, and yielding means for holding the said projection or projections upon the said rotatable disk in detachable engagement with the opening or openings in the first named disk.

A. device for dispensing liquid, semiliquid and plastic materials comprising a receptacle for containing the material to be discharged having an open end, a discharge tube extending into said receptacle, a disk having a flanged opening at its center, the said liange having detachable connection with the said discharge tube, a second disk for closing the open end of said receptacle having operative connection therewith, said second disk being rotatably mounted upon the central flange of the first named disk,
means for retaining the said second named disk on the flange surrounding the central opening of the first named disk, and means for causing the discharge of the material from the said receptacle when it is rotated in a predetermined direction.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a receptacle closed at one endland open at the other, the edges of the open end being provided With an out- Wardly extending flange, a discharge tube extending into said receptacle, a disk rotatably supported on the said discharge tube, said disk being adapted to close the open end of said receptacle, a hollow handle having an open end, means whereby the said open end is adapted to be secured to the said disk, and the open end of said handle being adapted to Contact with the outwardly extending Hange upon the said receptacle to clamp and hold the same against the said disk.
