TELEPHONIC ANNUNCIATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,946, dated June 26, 1883u Application filed September 25, 1882. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FREDERIO l3. HAZLETT, a resident of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephonic Annunciators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved annunciator for telephonic or other analogous uses. Its form and arrangement are shown in the accompanying drawings, and its operation set out in the following specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the entire device; Fig. 2, a plan of same; Fig. 3, a front elevation of the drop and plate to which it is attached, the drop being down; Fig. 4;, a front elevation of same with drop raised; Fig. 5, a vertical section of drop through line P Q, Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a side view of plug, and Fig. 7 a cross-section of same through line B S, Fig. 6.
As shown in the drawings, A is a switchboard; O, an ordinary electro-magnet; F, an armature pivoted on the points of the screws 1), and G a lever rigidly attached to the-armature and passing through the switch-board.
On the face of the switch-board is a metal plate, B, having at one end a circular hole, and in this hole and a corresponding hole passing through the switch-board is journaled a sleeve, 0, formed integrally with or rigidly attached to the drop 0. The end of the drop opposite the sleeve is notched, and there is a corresponding notch in the plate B. Aspring, H, attached to the lever G of the armature, forces the lever into the notch of the drop 0, and holds it up when raised to a horizontal position. When, however, the armature F is drawn to the electro-magnet, the force of this spring is overcome, the lever G is withdrawn from the notch, and the drop falls of .its own Weight.
The plug D, provided with a conductingcord, L, is inserted inthe sleeve 0, and connect-s on the back side of the board with a wire in the ordinary. way. The inner surface of the sleeve is provided with a series of grooves, a a, and the part of the plug which enters the sleeve has a series of corresponding lugs, so that after the falling of the drop,
if the plug be inserted and turned ninety de grees, the drop is raised to a horizontal position, the lever G enters the notch in the drop, and the latter is secured in place.
The operations of the magnet, the armature, and the plug, so far'as making and breaking circuit is concerned, are the same as in the ordinary annunoiator and switch-board.
The advantage which I claim for the device shown is the bringing the drop and the corresponding hole for the plug together, so that the falling of the drop indicates at once the proper hole for the plug, without reference to any series of numbers or other indicatingmarks. Another advantage is the making of the drop in such form that it may be readily thrown up into position by means of the plug.
I prefer the form shown; but it is evident that its details may be varied somewhat without changing theprinciple. The interior form of the sleeve may be polygonal or of any other non-circular shape, and the plug of a form to fit within it. The plate B is not a material element of the device, and may be changed in form ormaterial or dispensed with altogether; but it seems to me preferable to use a plate of practically the construction shown.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. In an annunciator, a drop pivoted on a sleeve journaled in the switch-board, said sleeve being adapted for the reception of a plug for making connection.
2. In an annunciator, a drop pivoted on a sleeve whoseinner surface is grooved or slotted, in combination with a plug adapted to 0 enter said sleeve, and provided with lugs adapted to enter the grooves therein, whereby the rotation of the plug rotates the drop in its own plane.
3. The combination of the plate B, drop 0, 5 pivoted on the sleeve 0, and plug D, all constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
