To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BERGMAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Electric Relay System, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to relay apparatus for use in messenger call systems, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class and improved wiring thereof and which also involves an improved form of switch whereby the relay may be worked on an open or closed circuit by reversing the battery current from one of the relay contacts to another, whereby a material saving is effected in a messenger call system. My improvement, however, is not limited to messenger call systems but may be used in connection with telegraph or other line circuits or systems.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a messenger call system involving two of my improved relay devices and a switch employed in connection therewith, and Fig. 2 a side view of one of the relays.
In Fig.- 1 of the accompanying drawing I have shown at a and a two of my improved relay devices, at b a two arm and two throw switch device, at c a plug connection plate, at (Z a register device, at e a buzzer, at f and f two messenger call boxes, at g a battery and at h lamps or resistance coils, as may be desired, all of these parts being the same as are usually employed in an ordinary messenger call system, except for the difference in the construction of the relays, the switch 6, and the method of wiring.
I have also shown at a in Fig. 2, and in side elevation, another of my improved relays, and the relays a, a and a each involves the usual magnets 2', armature plate 6 contact screws 71 and i main line posts 71 and 2', local line posts 77 and i a spring 6 connected with the armature plate i two switch contact points 6 and i and a switch 2' and the switch contact point 5 is connected with the contact screw i by a wire and the switch contact point 2' is connected with the screw i by a wire 2', and the post i is connected with the armature plate i by a wire z' iiwhile the post 2' is connected with the switch 2' by a Wire 71 The switch device 6 consists of the ordinary switch plate provided with a two side and two throw switch arm 12 connected with the plate centrally thereof, and with contact devices 5 and b, and said plate is also provided at its opposite ends with contact devices I) and b and b and b, in connection with which the switch 6 operates.
The plug connection plate 0 is of the usual construction and said plate 0, the switch 6, the battery 9, the buzzer e and the register cl are all grounded, as shown at w, and the plug plate 0 is provided with a main line circuit wire j in connection with which the call boxes f and f are placed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the only dilference between my improved relay and those heretofore employed in a similar relation, and for a similar purpose, is in the fact that there are only two binding posts 5 and i for the local circuit wires, which are also two in number, and two contact points for the switch 11 the remaining features of construction being those usually employed.
In the operation of my improved relay apparatus, the current from the battery 9 passes through a main feed wire j to and through the relay a, through a branch wire j to the connection plate 0, out into the field wire 7' in which are placed any number of messenger call boxes, two of which are shown at f and f and returns on a branch wire 7' to and through the relay a through a branch wire 7' to the contact 6", of the switch 6 to the contact 6 through the switch arm 5 and to ground, as shown at w. I also provide local wires 70 and k which connect respectively with the posts 2' and i on the relay 4, and the relay a is provided with corresponding wires 70 and 7c which connect respectively with the posts 77 and i The wires 76 and 70* are connected with the battery 9, while the wire is of the relay a is connected with the register (I, and the wire 70 of the relay a is connected with the contact 12 of the switch 6, passes through arm 6 to the contact 6 through a wire m to the buzzer e. The switch I), or the contact Z2 thereof, is provided with a wire 12 which connects with the wire 70, and the contact 5 is provided with a wire n which connects with the battery 9.
If, at anv time, there should be a break in the field wire j which in turn breaks the circuit in the main line wires y, j and j*, j, which pass through the relays a and a respectively, the armature plates 2' of said relays a and a will move in the direction of the spring i making connection with the contact screw 11 thereby completing the circuit in the local wires and their branch connections as will be understood, which operation will operate the register d and sound the buzzer e. The register (Z being operated by a circuit through the wire is from the register, to the contact point 6 the wire 2', and armature plate 5 of the relay a, through the contact screw i the wire 2' contact point 2', through the switch r1 wire 2', contact point 2' and wire 76 to the battery 7; while the buzzer e is sounded by the circuit through the wire m, from said buzzer e to the contact 6 of the switch 7), through the switch arm 5 to the contact 6 and through the wire 70 to the contact point 2' through the wire 2' and armature plate i of the relay a through the contact screw i wire 2', contact point i through the switch wire 2' contact point i and wire 70 to the battery 9. The operator having been notified of the break above referred to, by the register cl and the buzzer 6, will throw the switch arms 2' of the relays a and a in contact with the contact points 2' of said relays, at the same time the switch arm 6 will be thrown into its reverse position, or in connection with the contacts I) and Z) of said switch, and after this operation has been performed a call may be made from any of the messenger call boxes on either side of the break, and should said break be between the messenger call boxes, 7" and 7, a call from the box f would pass from the connection plate 0, through the wire j, through the relay a and out through the wire j to the contact 6 of the switch 6, through the switch arm 6 to the contact I), and through the wire n to the battery g, and a call from the box f would pass from the connection plate 0 through the wire 7' through the relay a and out through the wire j to the battery 9. But, in the case of two breaks in the field wire the messenger call boxes between the two breaks on said wire will not be in communication with the copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing office, or the relays a and a until one of said breaks has been closed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an electric relay system, the combination of a battery, two relay devices provided each with two main line wires and two local line wires, a two-pole double throw switch with which the main and local line wires connect, a connection plate with which one main line wire of each relay connects, a field wire also in connection with said connection plate and in which are placed messenger call boxes, a register connected by a wire with one of said relays and with said switch, and a buzzer connected by a wire with the other relay through said switch, whereby when the field wire breaks said register will be operated and said buzzer sounded.
2. In an electric relay system, the combination of a battery, two relay devices, a twopole double throw switch, a connection plate, a register and a buzzer, said relay devices being each provided with two main wire connections and two local wire connections, one main wire from said battery being connected with one of the main wire connections of one relay and the other main wire from said battery being connected with said switch and with one of the main wire connections of the other relay, wires connected with the other main wire connection of said relays and with said connection plate, a field wire also in connection with said connection plate and in which are placed messenger call boxes, wires connected to one local wire connection of each relay and with said battery, a wire connected with the other local wire connection of one relay and with said switch, a wire connecting said buzzer and said switch, a wire connected with the local wire connection of the other relay and with said register and said switch whereby when the field wire breaks said register will be operated and said buzzer sounded, and means whereby a call may be received from the messenger call boxes on either side of said break.
