CIRCUIT MAKING AND BREAKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,981, dated February 20, 1894.
Application filed September 8, 1893. Serial No. 485,103. (No model.)

Beit known that I, DAVID H. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Circuit Making and Breaking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to induction coils and automatically operated circuit-closers`for use therewith. It is illustratedin the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side view of the device, and Fig. 2 a diagrammatic View with parts removed.
Like parts are indicated by the same letters in both figures.
A is the board or base on which the parts may be mounted,and B is the induction coil, case, or cover, in which is the secondary coil C having the terminals D D, and the primary coil E having the terminals F F. From terminal F leads conductor F to binding post F2, whence leads conductor FS to battery F4, whence leads conductor F5 to binding post F9, whence leads conductor F7 to the terminal FS on the pivoted block or plate F9.
F19 is the opposite terminal connected by the conductor F11 with the terminal F. The conductors F7 and F11 are iiexible.
G is the core of the induction coil and H a contact plate opposed to the end of the core and secured on the pivoted plate F9.
.I is a closed partially filled mercury chamber, preferably of glass or non-conducting material, and secured rigidly upon the plate F9. Into one end of this chamber protrudes the contact point K and into the other end the contact rod L. The latter is normally always immersed in the mercury while the former engages the mercury only when the plate F9 is upright.
Downwardly projecting from the pivoted plate F9 is the pendulum rod M, having the adjustable pendulum plate M at the lower end thereof.
N is a bar or strap on the base A and it is provided with a short screw-threaded bolt O and a long screw-threaded bolt P. At the end of the latter is the plate P adapted to engage the plate F9 and thus serve as an ad- 5o justable stop.
R is a spring connecting one end of the screw bolt O with the corner of the plate F9 and it serves as an elastic adjustable pull in opposition to the ycore of the induction coil. It is quite evident that the arrangement and construction-of these several parts could be greatly altered without departing from the spirit oi my invention and that a different sort of induction coil could be employed. It is equally evident that the pendulum, or spring and stop, or both, could be dispensed with. I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the precise form and construction and arrangement ot' the several parts set forth.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:-The mercury cup with its contact points serves to complete the circuit when the plate F9 is in its erect position but the circuit is broken when the plate -is turned on its pivot. When the circuit is otherwise completed it is evident that a current will pass through the primary and energize the core, which will immediately draw down the plate H, tip the plate F9 and break the connection between the mercury and the point K, thus breaking the circuit, whereupon the parts will return to their normal positions when the current will be again established and the process repeated. The rapidity with which this making and breaking of the circuit takes place may be varied by the use of the adjustable pendulum, or by means of the adjustable spring and stop, or by both.
I claiml. The combination of an induction coil with a circuit breaker in the primary circuit, said circuit breaker comprising a pivoted plate to which is fastened a sealed mercury chamber with contact points of unequal length therein, said circuit breaker and induction coil so related that when the latter is energized the mercury chamber is moved to break the circuit, and an adjustable spring and stop associated with the circuit breaker to regulate the rapidity of its motion.
