I HAT OR CAP LINING.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent Application filed December 22, 1899.

T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CAESAR sums, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have-invented new and useful Improve ments in Hat or Gap Linings,'of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in hat and cap linings, whereby a mirror or comb can be held in a hat-lining in such a manner that the said mirror or comb cannot ordinarily be seen when the hat or cap is removed from the head. i

The invention consists in combinations of parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a View of the interior of a hat provided with my improvement, the cover be ing swung down. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, the cover-being raised.

A 1nirror,A, of anysuitablekind, is secured in some suitable manner to the top B of the hat-lining (I, which is made in the usual manner.

To the top B of the lining a cover, I), is jointed or otherwise held removably, which has its outer surface made to resemble the usual tops of hat-liningsthat is to say, its outer lower surface is covered with silk or other suitable material; and the manufacturer s or dealer s name or trade-mark, or the name of the brand or other matter, is stamped, embossed, or printed on the same in the usual manner. At that side of the top of the lining opposite to the one at which the cover D is jointed, a prong or pin, E, or other catch projects, over which the free end of the jointed cover D is passed to hold the cover against the top of the lining, and to cover or conceal the mirror A. At its free end the cover D is provided on its under or outer surface with a button or loop, F, by means of which the cover D can be withdrawn from the catch E and swung down. The inside of the hat has the same appearance as in any other hat, and the No. 279,830, dated June 19, 1883.

A pocket-comb, G, can be held by loops or other devices on the upper or inner surface of the cover D, or on the top B at the side of the mirror. If desired, the inner surface of the cover 1) can be provided with ornaments or advertisements.

My above-described i1npro\"ement in linings can be provided in ladies and gents hats and caps of all kinds.

The mirror can also be attached to the under surface of the hat instead of to the top of the lining; and in this case the cover D must also be jointed to the inner surface of the top of the hat.

I am aware that it is not new to secure a closet or box closed by a door on the inside of a hat; but

W hat I do claim as new and of my invention is 1. In a hat or analogous article,the combination of a lining, 0, having the top B and prong E, with a cover, D, jointed to the lining, whereby there is formed a chamber adapted to hold an articlebetween the top 13 and cover D, as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a hat or cap, of a mirror attached to the top of the lining, and of a cox'er jointed to the top of thelining, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with a hat or cap, of the mirror A, attached to the top of the lining, the cover D, jointed to the top of the lining, and of the prong or catch E for holding the cover against the top of the lining, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

' 4-. The combination, with a hat or cap, of a mirror, A, attached to the top of the lining, the cover D, jointed to the lining, the prong or catch E, and the button or loop F, attached to the cover, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
