Description

July 9, 1957 c, JAEHNE 2,798,240
PAINTING DEVICE Filed July 18, 1956 INVENTOR.
CHESTER P. 'SREHNE BY United States Patent fifiee PAINTING DEVICE Chester P. Jaehne, Minneapolis, Minn. Application July 19, 1956, Serial No. 598,884
Claims. (Cl. 15131.05)
This invention relates to a painting or coating device and especially to a portable pliable bottle containing a fluid material having a removable cap portion provided with a sloping top and an apertured cover for the top in engagement with a fabric covered frusto-conical roller.
An object of this invention is to provide in a painting device means for painting trim on houses and the trim around windows of houses.
It is another object of this invention to provide in a painting device for trim around windows of means which will prevent streaking on the adjoining window panes.
It is another object of this invention to provide in a portable painting device, a pliable bottle for fluid material and a removable cap means which includes a frustoconical roller as the applicator.
Other and further objects and advantages will appear from the detailed description and the appended claims.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the painting device, with parts in section.
Figure 2 is end view of the painting device, looking at the left side of Figure 1, parts broken away.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the painting device, disclosing the cap and roller.
Referring in detail to the drawing, is the painting device which comprises a pliable plastic round bottle 12. The bottle tapers to an outlet portion 14.
A cap portion 16 comprises a cap 18 which is screwthreaded to the outlet portion 14 of the bottle 12. The top 17 of the cap 18 is sloped toward the horizontal part of the outlet 14. A perforated plastic cover 20 is removably mounted in the top 17 of the cap 18.
Standards or arms 22 and 24 extend upwardly from opposite sides of the cap 18. A plastic or rubber roller 26, frusto-conical in shape, is mounted on an axle 28. The ends of the axle 28 are journalled in the standards 22 and 24 respectively. A Dynel or sheeps wool covering or sleeve 30 surrounds the roller 26. Dynel is a proprietary name owned by Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation for an artificial textile fiber similar to sheeps wool and comprising a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile.
A segment like guide trim plate 32 is mounted on the end of axle 28 at the larger end of the roller 26. The edge 33 of trim guide plate 32 extends slightly short of the surface of the sleeve on roller 26.
Patented July 9, 1957 The larger end of the frusto-conical roller 26 is adjacent the lower end of the top 17, the smaller end of the roller being at the higher end of the sloping top 17. The cover 20 is in engagement with the fabric sleeve 30 on the roller 26.
When the pliable bottle 12 is squeezed, paint is fed out the apertures in the cover 20 evenly to the portion of the fabric sleeve 30 in engagement with the apertured cover 20.
The trim guide plate 32 engages the pane of glass in a window adjacent to the wood trim and guides the machine preventing streaking paint on the window pane.
The painter or user of the painting device must hold the bottle 12 at an angle away from the window pane to insure that the roller 26 will completely engage the trim. The cone-shaped roller 26 will insure that the small angular trim is properly painted.
It is possible to remove the cap 18 and roller 26 from the bottle 12 so that the bottle may be refilled or for the cap portion 18 to be cleaned or replaced with a new cap portion 18.
It is to be understood that variations and changes may be made in the details and arrangements of the elements of this device but all such changes are deemed to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
1. A painting device comprising a receptacle for fluent material having a longitudinal axis and having an opening at one end thereof, an apertured cover for said opening inclined at an oblique angle with reference to the longitudinal axis of the receptacle, a frusto-conical paint roller, and means carried by said receptacle for rotatably mounting said roller substantially in contact with said inclined cover.
2. A painting device as set forth in claim 1, wherein the inclined cover and roller mounting means are carried by a removable receptacle cap.
3. A painting device as set forth in claim 1, wherein the roller is provided with a fabric cover for engagement with said apertured cover.
4. A painting device as set forth in claim 1, wherein a trim guide plate is carried by the roller mounting means adjacent one end of the roller.
5. A painting device as set forth in claim 1, wherein the receptacle is formed of pliable material, whereby when the receptacle is squeezed fluent material will be supplied to said roller through the apertured cover.
