No. 279,795. Patented June 19,1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST F. PFLUEGER, OF AKRON, OHIO.
PA PER-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,795, dated June 19, 1883.
Application filed October 9, 185 2.
To all wi l/0722, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST F. PFLUEGER, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Veights, of which. the
following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a paper-weight of novel construction which will be luminous when not exposed to light, and this I accomplish by constructing the paperweight of an oblate hemisphere formed hollow, with a portion of its inner surface plain and straight to receive a suitable inscriptions1 ich as an advertisement, picture, or other device the entire inner surface of the hollow hemisphere being coated with a luminous compound of phosphorescent material, and the hollow space being then filled with plastic material, to the bottom of which may be attached a card bearingflrates of postage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of a paperweight constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 a plan view looking at the bottom of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the letter O indicates a hollow oblate hemisphere, of glass or. other transparent or translucent material, having a portion of its inner surface plain and straight, as at E, upon which is placed the de sired inscription-such, for example, as an advertisement, a picture, or any other desired The entire inner surface of the hollow hemisphere is then coated with an ordinary phosphorescent material which will be luminous when in the dark or not exposed to incident light. The hollow space is then filled with plaster-of-paris or other plastic material or cement, which, in
(No model.)
conjunction with the hollow body C, forms in effect a so] i d hemisphere, the base being smooth for the purpose of receiving a card bearing the rates of postage, which is arranged radially in a circle, as represented in Fig. 2.
I11 making the paper-weight the inscription, picture, or other ornament is provided by printing, stenciling, stamping, or otherwise producing the same directly on the plane surface E of the oblate hemisphere, after which the luminous compound is spread over the same. The light emanating from the luminous coating will shine through all the inter stiees of the inscription or picture, but be obstructed by the lines or characters composing the latter.
In practice the hollow oblate hemisphere will be molded from glass, and the inscription will be visible by looking down upon the hemi sphere. The tables of rates of postage can be inscribed directly on the paper-weight or on a card suitably attached in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As an improved article of manufacture, -a paper-weight composed of a hollow hemisphere provided on its interior with an inscription or pictureand a coating of luminous substance and a filling of plastic material arranged in the hollow space of the said hemisphere, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of October, A. D. 1882.
ERNEST F. PFLUEGER.
