1 Claim. (Cl. 292-77) The present invention relates to door checks and closers and more particularly to a check which will lirst interrupt the closing of a door and then assist in completing the closing of the door.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will check the closing action of the door and then assist in closing the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will handle doors ofV various weights without the necessity of modifying the construction of the device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be easily adjusted to vary the checking and closing eifect of the device as desired.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specication when read in the light of the attached drawing, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the invention attached to the door in open position and to the door frame, with the device and the door shown in dotted lines with the door in closed position.
Figure 2 is a Vertical cross-section of the device taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the invention shown with the door partially open, with parts broken away.
Now referring to the drawing in detail, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several iigures, the reference numeral indicates a door which is hingedly secured to a frame 11 by means not shown. A cam member 12 is secured to the face of the frame 11 by means of screws 13. The cam member 12 has a flange member 14 through which the screws 13 pass, and a downwardly and outwardly extending cam face 15 which terminates in an apex 16 from which an upwardly and outwardly extending cam face 17 projects. The cam face 15 is substantially longer than the cam face 17. The cam member 12 is constructed from resilient material such as at spring metal or the like.
A roller 18 formed from rubber or other suitable material, is provided with a central hub 19 which has a bore 20 extending transversely therethrough. A spring carrier 21 having a depending loop portion 22 is secured to the door 10 by means of screws 23 passing through washers 24 and engaging the loop portion 22. It should be noted that the carrier 21 is vertically adjustable by loosening the screws 23 and moving the loop 22 up or down as desired. The upper ends of the loop 22 are formed into a pair of reversely wound helicoidal coils 25 and 26 from which extend a pair of upstanding arms 27 and 28 having right angularly extending opposed end portions 29 and 30 which project into opposite ends of the hub 19 to supice port the roller 18 on the door 10. The carrier 21 is formed of spring wire so as to bias the roller 18 in an upward and inward direction. A bolt 31 passes through the center of the helicoidal coil 25 and the helicoidal coil 26, and has a nut 32 threadedly engaged thereon. The bolt 31 maintains the coils 25 and 26 in position with the end portions 29 and 30 in the hub 19 of the roller 18.
In the use and operation of the invention, the door 10 will be normally closed by a spring (not shown) and when the door has nearly closed, the roller 18 will engage the upwardly and outwardly extending cam face 17, quickly slowing the doors movement until the door has practically stopped. Further movement of the door will cause the roller 18 to pass under the apex 16 of the cam member 12 and then the roller 18 will be in engagement with the outwardly extending cam face 15, whereupon the action of the spring biased roller 18 will cause the door 10 to be completely closed as the roller moves up the cam face 15. Obviously, the adjustment of the roller 18 with relation to the cam 12 will affect the action of the device so as to provide greater or lesser checking action, as well as greater or lesser closing action, as desired.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that various modilications may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
A door check and closer device comprising an elongated substantially rectangular strip of resilient material, said strip terminating at one of its ends in an obtusely bent flange, means extending through said ange to connect it with a door frame, with said strip terminating at its other end in another obtusely bent flange, said strip having disposed between said anges, depending downwardly and outwardly from said first-mentioned ange, a cam face, with both of said anges projecting upwardly therefrom, the other of said anges also projecting outwardly from said cam face, a substantially U-shaped spring wire member including a pair of oppositely disposed arms having one of their respective adjacent ends connected by a bight member, each of said arms having a helicoidal spring coil formed therein intermediate its respective ends, said arms having outer terminal end portions bent laterally towards each other in confronting relation, means engaging and extending between said arms intermediate said coils and said bight member to secure adjustably said wire member to a door adjacent the upper end thereof, a roller having a centrally positioned hub, said hub having a centrally located axially extending bore extending therethrough to receive in the opposite ends thereof said terminal end portions of said wire member, said helicoidal spring coils constantly tending to bias said roller for movement towards said door and said roller being positioned for arcuate movement on said door to engage said outwardly and upwardly projecting lange formed on said other end of said strip and subsequently said cam face and means extending through.
and engaging the remotely disposed ends of said coil springs to prevent lateral movement of said arms in a direction away from each other.
