Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN T. BRYANT AND DAVID TOSTEVIN, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
FOUNDATION FOR PAVEMENTS...
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,701, dated June 19, 1883,
' Application filed April 10, 1883 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, REUBEN T. BRYANT and DAVID TosTEvIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foundations for Pavenients, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to found ations for pavements and roads or streets, andlhas for its object the formation of a base which will not only be rm anddurable, but which will form an under drain to carry away water or impurities when necessary.
In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective view, and Figs. 2 and 3 endviews, of our invention.
Heretofore tedious and expensive preparations have been used in laying foundations, but we provide one which is easily and rapidly made, and one upon which any preferred finish can be built without liability of disarrangement from frost or heavy pressure.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent a series of hollow pipes or tubes made of suitable length and diameter to be adapted to the work to be done. These tubes are made concavo-conveX on one sidethat is, they have a curved groove running longitudinally of them, which is formed upon one side, the concavity of said groove conforming to the conveXity of the opposite side of the tube, so that when two of the tubes or pipes are laid side .b'y side the convex side of one will lit snugly vmixture immediately beneath and above the pipes at their point of contact, iilling up the gutters or spaces on each side ush or a little more than flush with the upper and lower peripheries of thepipes. When the pipes have been thus laid and cemented, any superstructure may be built upon them which may be desired. It is evident that these pipes may be perforated for drainage, or that suitable drain- 4age may be effected from their open ends.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- A foundation for roads or sidewalks, constructed of a series of pipes or tubes, A A, having formed in their sides longitudinal concavo-convex grooves, said tubes or pipes being connected together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof We afIiX our signatures .in presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN T. BRYANT. DAVID TOSTEVIN.
