Description

E. W. PERRIN.
Wood-Pavements.
No. 146,019 Patented Dec.30,-1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN W. PERRIN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD PAVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Lettc rs Patent No. 146,019, dated December 30, 1873 application filed October 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. PERRIN, of Portland, Multnomah county, State of Oregon, have invented an Improved Pavement; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to en able any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of pavements which are formed by a series of wooden blocks standing upon the road-bed, with the end of the grain upward; and it consists, principally, in the use of blocks having a large base, and these blocks are further connected by a system of rods which unite them horizontally in different directions, so that, if there is any settling of the soil in the road-bed, the general surface of the pavement will remain intact. The upper surface of the blocks is channeled when they are made, and these channels are filled with asphaltum,
gravel, or any suitable material which will allow of a foot-hold for the horses.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of one of my blocks. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of a series united to form a section of pavement. Fig. 4 is a side view of a block of my pavement.
This block is made of a large size, preferably about sixteen inches square, and of a depth suitable for strength. The upper surface is channeled, as at B, when the block is formed, and these channels serve to hold sand, gravel,
or asphaltum, or other suitable substance, as desired, to give a foot-hold for animals. Be low the bottom of the channels the blocks are pierced with holes horizontally, and at right angles with each other, and through these holes rods 0 are passed, so as to unite the blocks in any direction.
By this construction I am enabled to form my pavement with any ordinary solid foundation of earth or sand, and from the size of the blocks and my method of uniting them they are prevented from turning up or becoming irregular upon the surface from the unequal settling of the foundation. The meeting edges of the blocks are slightly beveled, as shown at d. The blocks forming the outside, next to the curb, may be pierced an gularly, so that they can be inclined to form the gutter. This construction will insure a solid and permanent roadway, notliable to get out of order or repair. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pavement composed of the blocks A, channeled at B, and beveled, as at (I, when united by the rods G extending through them, the whole being constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
EDWIN WV. PEBRIN. [L.
