Hauberg, Greenville, Ohio Application January 17, 1956, Serial No. 559,585 2 Claims. (Cl. 66-136) This invention relates to a plating attachment for knitting machines.
Another object of this invention is to provide an attachment for knitting machines which will permit the plating of the yarn simultaneously with the conventional knitting operation.
Another object of this invention is to provide a plating attachment which is so arranged and constructed that the plating yarn may be adjusted to provide for feeding of this yarn from an outer to an inner position and to advance or retard the same in relation to the knitting of the yarn.
A further object of this invention is to prov-ide an attachment of this kind which also includes a latch opener for opening the latches of the needles.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a portion of a knitting machine having a plating attachment mounted thereon constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section of the machine looking at the trailing end of the attachment.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation yon an enlarged scale of the attachment and a portion of the needles.
lFig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the plating attachment.
Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on line 5 5 of Fig. l.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary side elevation partly broken away and in section of the attachment.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates generally a cylinder having a plurality of latch type knitting needles 11 disposed on the outer side rod. The nee- -dles 11 are disposed on the inner side of a cylinder cam block 12 and the upper ends of the needles 11 are disposed on the outer side 'of a dial member 13 which is disposed below a dial plate 14. The structure hereinbefore described is conventional in knitting machines and also includes a yarn carrier or holder 15 extending upwardly from the dial plate 14. The yarn carrier 15 is provided with a flanged upper end -16 having a plurality of porcelain yarn guides 17 mounted therein. The holder 15 is formed on the outer side thereof with an elongated vertically disposed recess 18 within which the shank 19 of a plating attachment constructed according to an embodiment of this invention is adapted to adjustably and detachably engage. The plating attachment generally indicated at 20 includes a lower horizontally disposed body 21 which is formed on the leading end thereof with an inclined V-shaped latch opening plate 22. The plate 22 as shown in Fig. 3, is adapted to move the latches 23 of the needles 11 to an open position so that the yarn 24 which passes through a yarn guiding opening 25 may engage the 'hooks 26 of the needles 11. The plating attachment 20 includes a rearwardly projecting member 27 which is formed with a substantially cylindrical vertically disposed rear portion 28 having a vertical -opening 29. The extension 27 also includes a rearwardly projecting bill 3! which is disposed at the lower portion of the extension 27 for guiding the plating yarn to a position for engagement with the hooks 26 of the needles 11. The opening or bore 29 has disposed therein a yarn guiding member 31 which is formed with a yarn guiding bore 32. The bore 32 is inclined to the vertical so that the lower outlet end 33 of the bore 32 may be disposed at a pre-selected distance relative to the guide 3) and to the needles 11. The plating yarn indicated at 38 is adapted to extend vertically downwardly from a guide 34 carried by the flange 16. The guide 31 is secured in adjusted position in the bore 29 by means of a set screw 35. The guide member 31 may not only be circumferentially adjusted to dispose the outlet 33 thereof at a predetermined distance from the guide 30, but may also be vertically adjusted to provide further selected adjustment of the guide 31. The shank 19 is provided in one vertical edge thereof with an elongated slot 36 and a shank clamping screw 3'7 engages through the slot or -cut-out 26 and is threaded into the yarn holder 15.
ln the use and yoperation iof this attachment the plating attachment 20 is adjustably secured to the carrier 15 by the clamping screw 37. The knitting yarn strand 24 is extended through the guide opening 25 and the plating strand 38 which engages through the `guide 34 is eX- tended downwardly through the guide 31. The guide 31 is circumferentially adjusted by the set screw 35 and the adjustment of the guide 31 may also be accomplished vertically so that the plating strand 38 will be directed to the needles 11 in either a retarded, advanced or other adjusted position with respect to the needles 11 and to the yarn strand 24.
With an attachment as hereinbefore described, the plating strand will not be placed under any undue strain which might cause the breaking of the plating strand and the knitting strand 24 will also be under the same conditions, that is the knitting Strand may be put under a predetermined tension which is short of the breaking tension.
What is claimed is:
l. ln a knitting machine having latch needles and a yarn holder, a plating attachment comprising a vertical shank, means securing said shank t-o said holder, a horizontal body at the lower end of said shank, `a latch opening means -at the -leading end of said body, said body having a knitting yarn guide opening rearwardly of said latch opening means, said body having a vertical opening adjacent the rear thereof, `a cylindrical guide member in said vertical opening, said guide member having a yarn guiding opening extending obliquely therethrough, and means adjustably securing said guide member.
2. In a knitting machine having latch needles and a yarn holder, a plating attachment comprising a vertical shank, means securing said shank t-o 'said holder, a horizontal body at the lower end of -said shank, a latch opening means at the leading end of sai-d body, said body having `a knitting yarn guide opening rearwardly of said latch opening means, said body having a vertical opening adjacent the rear thereof, a cylindrical guide member -in said vertical opening, said guide member having a yarn guiding lopening extending obliquely therethrough, yand a set screw securing said guide member in vertically adjusted and in circumferentially adjusted position.
