Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
LEVI A. BEARDSLEY, OF SOUTH EDMESTON, NEW YORK.
BENCH-visie.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,960, dated April 24, 1860.
-To all whom t may concern:
` Fig. 2, the same invention applied to a wrench.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The jaws, A A, are strongly pivoted to two arms, B, which themselves are Apivoted together at their lower ends at a; these four parts are made of suitable metal and work freely in their oints.
D is a right and left screw shaft tapped through each jaw, A A, and having a suitable handle for turning the screw in opening or. closing the jaws. In the middle of the screw, D, or at an intermediate point between the jaws, A A, is a small wheel, b, which turns in a grooved projection, c, of a guide bar, E, and keeps this bar in place. This bar, in the vise of Fig. 1, is placed under the screw, D, and passes through holes punched through the jaws at right angles to their inner faces. The wheel or annular ring, Z), with the projecting portion, c, of the guide bar, E, lits into the recess in the jaws, when the jaws are brought closely together the recesses are indicated by dotted lines in both gures.
J are arms riveted securely to one jaw, A, and serve to secure the vise to a bench or other convenient stand.
Now the object of the guide rod is to keep the aws always parallel, and when they are screwed up tightly to anything to prevent them from drawing on the screw threads and injuring the threads, the strain being equal consequently the jaws can be driven up with greater ease, and as they will preserve their parellelism under any circumstances, unless the bar, E, bends or breaks, less power will be required to operate the screw to obtain a iirm fixed bite.
By changing the position of the screw and bar, and transposing them, a complete wrench will be obtained, operating upon the same principles as the vise.
Having thus described my invention what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the pivoted jaws A, hinged arms B, guide bar E, recess c, right and left screw D, and ring b, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
LEVI A. BEARDSLEY.
