Description
@EUR
@TATE PATENT FFQE CADVALLADER EVANS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MODE OF APPLYING FLOTS T0 REG-ULATE THE HEIGHT OF WATER IN STEAM- BOILERS.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 2,795, dated. September 30, 1842.
T 0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it kno-wn that I, CADWALLADER EVANS, of the city of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved mode oi applying a float to regulate the height of water in steam-boilers and to give notice of a deficiency of water. y y
The nature of my invention, I describe as follows: To the ordinary steam boiler A, I attach at any convenient place on the outsideot said boiler a separate cylinder orl vessel B, by means of short pipes F F one below the water line and the other above the water line as shown in the drawing.
C, is an ordinary float made fast to rod D, which passes through each end of the cylinder. To the upper end of rod is seeured buttons l l. E is a small steam cock. At the bottom of rod at joint K can be fixed any convenient fixture to open a valve or cock connected with a eist-ern or cold water pump to admit a greater supply of water to the force pump to supply the deficiency in the boiler.
The operation is as follows: Then the water sinks in the boiler A itwill also fall in the cylinder B allowing lioat C to sink bringing the but-ton l in contact with the lever attached to steam cock E, opening` it and letting steam escape, giving the necessary notice of a deficiency o' water, and as the water in the boiler rises the float will rise, pressing the lower button against the lever of Cock, shutting the same; so will the lower end ot rod open or sliutany cock to admit water tothe force pump.
7 hat I claim as new andas my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The applicationof a iloat within a separate cylinder or vessel connected above and,
below the water line of a steam boiler; the
advantages gained by this arrangement isA CADVJALLADER EVANS.
