(Cl. 347) In my co-pending application Serial No. 286,051, now Patent No. 2,712,656, I have shown an opening for a mattress with a suitable frame in the mattress fabric around the opening, with a suitable closure for closing the opening. The present application relates to the same general class of invention, and has for its main object the provision of an opening in a mattress fabric permitting insertion of a hose nozzle of a vacuum machine for the purpose of sucking out the air from the mattress casing or blowing the air thereinto and with it to remove all dust from the fabric of the mattress casing, and for renewing and refreshing the air in the mattress casing.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of an opening in a mattress casing, the body portion of the fabric of a mattress casing adjacent the opening being provided wtih a frame made from thread stitching around the opening for the purpose of prevent ing ravelling or fraying of the fabric adjacent the opening, and also for the purpose of preventing distortion in the mattress casing around said opening.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a closure for the opening aforesaid, which closure includes a slide fastener, the tapes of which are secured to the material of the mattress casing by means of the said thread stitching, with the slide of the fastener being positioned centrally of the opening so that when the said slide is in an open position an opening will result of a sufiicient size to permit insertion of a hose nozzle for the purposes indicated.

Another object of the present invention is the provision in connection with an opening in a mattress wall of a slide fastener supportable upon a pair of tapes arranged in an edge to edge relation, which tapes are superimposed upon the marginal portion of the casing adjacent the said opening, with tapes covering said opening, the tapes being superimposed by a washer or a stiffening member along the marignal portion of the casing adjacent the opening, with thread stitching passed along the marginal portion of the casing adjacent said opening and through said tapes, with said thread stitching enclosing therewithin said washer for providing a stiff frame adjacent said opening.

Fig. 1 is a face elevational view, looking from the inside of a mattress casing, showing the opening closed by a slide supported by means of a pair of tapes, with a frame made of thread stitching around the said opening, which stitching secures the tapes to the fabric of the mattress casing, with a washer superimposed upon said tapes and enclosed within said thread stitching;

Fig. 2 is a similar view, looking from the outside of the mattress casing, showing the slide in an open position; and

Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the present drawing in detail there is shown mattress casing 4 made of the usual fabric material. Made in the material of said mattress casing 4 is opening 5, which in the drawing is indicated to be of oval shape, but in practice may be of any suitable shape.

Inwardly of the mattress casing, covering said opening 5 completely, a pair of tapes 6 is superimposed upon said 2,795,803 Patented June 18, 1957 opening 5 as well as upon adjacent areas of the mattress casing. Said tapes 6 are connected by means of a slide fastener 7, operable by the usual tab 8 for either opening or closing the slide fastener.

Superimposed upon said tapes 6 oppositely to the edge of mattress casing material adjacent said opening 5 is washer 9, the inner edge of which corresponds to the contour of said opening 5. When said tapes 6 and washer 9 are in their proper position relative to said opening 5 as described, thereupon thread stitching 10 is applied to the edge of the mattress casing fabric adjacent opening 5, which stitching passes through tapes 6, and embeds therewithin said washer 9, as is clearly seen in Fig. 3. By virture of this arrangement the thread stitching provides for the mattress fabric adjacent opening 5 an embossed frame for which washer 9 imparts a degree of rigidity, thereby maintaining the fabric material adjacent said opening 5 against fraying and also prevents distortion thereof.

When said tab 8 has been shifted to one end of slide fastener 7, the same will become opened, as is indicated in Fig. 2. When said tab 8 is shifted to the opposite direction the slide will be closed as is shown in Fig. 1. Preferably said slide 7 is positioned centrally of said opening 5 and longitudinally with relation to its longer axis.

The opening resulting in tapes 6 when slide 7 has been opened as is seen in Fig. 2, will provide sufiicient access to a nose nozzle of a vacuum machine for the purpose of placing the same inwardly of the mattress casing during the operation of a vacuum machine for dislodging dirt and dust from the mattress fabric when the air is either sucked out or blown into the mattress casing. With the air either sucked out or blown into all dust particles adhering to the mattress fabric will be dislodged or removed. Furthermore the stale air within the mattress casing will be removed and replaced by the fresh air.

While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as new is:

1. In a mattress including a casing, said casing having an opening, a slide fastener including a pair of tapes superimposed upon the marginal portion of said casing adjacent said opening, said tapes completely covering said opening, a stiffening member superimposed upon said tapes on the overlapped margin of the casing and along the marginal portion of said casing adjacent said opening, and means for binding said tapes and said stiffening member to the marginal portion of said casing adjacent said opening.

2. In a mattress including a casing, said casing having an opening, a slide fastener including a pair of tapes superimposed upon the marginal portion of said casing adjacent said opening, said tapes completely covering said opening, a washer superimposed upon said tapes on the overlapped margin of the casing and along the marginal portion of said casing adjacent said opening, and means for binding said tapes and said washer to the marginal portion of said casing adjacent said opening.
