Description

'R G. REINEMA 2,795,471
-FURNITURE DESK' Y Filed Haren 26, 1954 J3 j@ 4 Y J8 United States Patent O FURNITURE DESK Richard G. Reineman, Muskegon, Mich., assigner to The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company, a corporation of Delaware Application March 26, 1954, Serial No. 418,825
2 Claims. (Cl. S12- 194) It is the general object of the invention to provide a new and improved desk.
Another object is to provide a new and improved desk having drawer pedestals formed of tubular members and provided with guides for drawers.
A further object is to provide such a desk in which each drawer pedestal comprises a pair of U-shaped tubular members positioned vertically and parallel, one behind the other, a leg extending downwardly from each member, and angle members extending horizontally between said members in a front to rear direction and fixed thereto to form a rigid structure, secure the pedestals to the desk top and to form supports and guides for one or more drawers.
Other objects will become readily apparent from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a preferred form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view thereof; and,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational View looking at the right hand end of Fig. 2.
While there is illustrated in the drawings and herein described a preferred form of the invention embodying two duplicate drawer pedestals, it is not intended to limit the invention to the particular form and arrangement shown. The scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
As shown in the drawings, a rectangular desk top is supported on a pair of open drawer pedestals 11. Each pedestal comprises a pair of U-shaped tubular members 12 and 13 positioned vertically in parallel relation, one behind the other, and tubular tapered legs 14 and 15 xed at their upper ends to the center points of the horizontal portions 16 of the members 12 and 13. The lower floor contacting ends of the legs 14 and 15 may be equipped with truste-conical rubber members 17 provided with metal glide discs 18.
The upper ends of the U-shaped members 12 and 13 are welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the vertical anges of a pair of angle members 19 and 20 which have their horizontal flanges fastened to the desk top 10 as by means of screws 21 or other suitable means. A transverse angle member 22 is similarly secured to the top 10 and to the rear ends of the members 19 and 20. Spaced below the angle members 19 and 20 a distance sucient to receive an upper drawer 22a is a second pair of angle members 23 and 24 with their vertical anges extending upwardly and welded or otherwise secured to the U-shaped members 12. and 13. A transverse angle member 25 connects the rear ends of members 23 and 24.
Similarly, a. pair of upper angle members 26 and 2.7,
2,795,471 Patented June 11, 1957 with a rear transverse angle member 28, and a pair of lower angle members 29 and 30, with .a rear transverse angle member 31, are provided with the pairs of angle members 26, 27, 29 and 30 welded to the U-shaped members 12 and 13.
The pairs of angle members 19, 20, 23, 24, 26, 27, 29 and 30 form a rigid pedestal frame and provide supports and guides for the upper drawer 22a and a lower and deeper drawer 32. The transverse members 21, 25, 28 and 31 are preferably welded or otherwise secured to the aforesaid pairs of angle members, respectively, and provide rear stops for the drawers. If desired, each pair of angle members and associated transverse member may be formed in one piece and thus a unitary member is provided which functions as a drawer guide and rear stop.
A center drawer 35 is located immediately under the top 10 and is supported and guided in a channel-like frame 36 provided with flanges 37 and 38 which are secured to the top in any suitable manner. The frame has a rear wall 39 provided with a similar mounting flange 40 and is also provided with a bottom reinforcing rib 41.
If desired, a shield or modesty panel 45 may be provided for the kneehole between 'the pedestals which has a tubular reinforcing rod 46 and a sheet-like material 47 forming the panel. The shield may be secured to the desk top by tabs 48.
It will thus be seen that a desk is provided which may have one or two identical pedestals each of which are of a rugged, practical construction utilizing a minimum number of parts. If ,a single pedestal is used, suitable legs may be provided in place of the other pedestal.
I claim:
l. A desk having, in combination with a top, an open drawer pedestal comprising a pair of generally U-shaped tubular members in spaced parallel relation one in front of the other, each member having its uprights laterally spaced apart and extending vertically Aupward to a point adjacent the desk top and its lower base portion extending generally horizontal, means secured to the tops of said members and secured to the underside of the desk top for attaching the pedestal to the top, a pair of spaced apart parallel angle members secured to their adjacent uprights of the U-shaped members and extending from front to rear of the desk top and forming guides for a drawer, a transverse member connected to the rear ends or" said angle members forming a stop for the drawer, and a leg extending downwardly from the base portion of each member.
2. A desk, as dened in claim l, wherein the pair of spaced apart parallel angle members are secured to their adjacent uprights between the mid-point and the tops of the uprights to form a drawer guide for an upper smaller drawer and an additional pair of spaced apart parallel angle members are secured to their adjacent uprights near the base portion of said members and form a guide for a relatively large deep drawer.
