P. L. GUSKLEY.
ENVELOPE. No. 279,543. Patented June 19,1883...
FIG.2.
wlmissEs. 2% W X UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP L. CUSKLEY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,543, dated June 19, 1883,
Application filed June13, 1882. (No inodel.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PHILIP L. CUsKLEY, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a rear view. Fig. 2 is an edge view of a part of an envelope, with the sides opened away from each other so that one loops into the envelope. Fig. 3 is a view of a part of one side of the envelope from the inside, in part section. 7
Same letters show like parts.
My invention relates to envelopes.
It consists of a tag or small piece of paper pasted to each of two corners of the envelope on the same end, a piece of cord or string pasted into the angle of the envelope on the inside and reaching the width of the same, the string reaching through the top angle of the envelope and then being folded down in under the tags, all in combination with any pa per envelope.
a shows the envelope. Z) is the string. a are the tags. The tags give the envelope strength at the end and corners. They also confine the end of the string, so that it will not be caught in any object and tear out the end when not desired. The ends (I of the string are folded down under the tags with this view.
When the letter or envelope is to be opened one of the tags under which the string is folded is caught by the finger and thumb and torn out, This brings with it one end of the string, upon pulling on which the end of the envelope is torn open and the contents can be removed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
The combination, with an envelope, of the string 1), tags 0, arranged as described, the ends d being folded under the tags on the outside of the envelope, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP L. CUSKLEY.
