I JOHN S. PARK AND JOHN W. GRAHAM, OF ROOKPORT, INDIANA.
GLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,499, dated June 12, 1883.
Application filed April 25. 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JoHN S. PARK and JOHN W. GRAHAM, of Rockport, in the county of Spencer and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glands; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in I glands 5 and it consists in a gland having a chamber made at the outer end to receive cotton or other absorbent material, in combination with an oil-cup, which is placed 011 top of the gland and connected with the chamber, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of our invention is to so construct a gland; that it will lubricate the piston rod, as it works back and forth through it, at all points alike. v
Figure 1 is avertical longitudinal section of a gland embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same.
A represents the gland, which may either be of the construction here shown or any other that may be preferred, and which has the chamber B formed in its outer end. This chamber is covered over by the removable cap 0, so as to hold the cotton or other absorbent material which is placed therein in position. Through the cover and the gland the piston-rod plays back and forth, and the absorbent material is packed in this chamber around the rod, as shown. Upon the top of the gland is placed an oil chamber or cup, D,
- which is secured in place in any suitable manner, and down through the center of which passes the grooved regulating-screw 0. By the adjustment of the screw the amount of oil which is fed to the absorbent material can be regulated at will. All of the oil that flows fromthe cup into the chamber B is absorbed by the cotton or other material, and as this material is .in direct contact with the pistonforth. I
