Description

y 1957 w. HERRON ONE PIECE we STRAP SUPPORT Filed April 8, 1955 D INVENTOR. W/A/50 6 5690 ATTEI RN EYS ONE PIECE LUG STRAP SUPPORT Wingo Herron, Charlotte, N (1.
Application April 8, 1955, Serial No. 500,137
4 Claims. (Cl. 139-154) This invention relates to lug strap supports such as used on picker sticks of looms, and in particular, a lug strap support having an open rectangular shaped frame depending from an anchor plate adapted to be secured to a picker stick with a U-shaped bolt, and a leather strap extended through an elongated slot in the lower part of the anchor plate and having a thickening strip secured to the upper end for retaining the depending portion of the strap in position in the lug strap support and thereby making the strap replaceable without loosening the bolt.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an im proved lug strap support in which all metal parts of the device are integral whereby an anchor plate and a conventional lug strap receiving frame are adapted to be readily attached to a picker stick with a U-bolt or the like.
Various types of supports have been provided for retaining lug straps on picker sticks and the like, however, in conventional types of supports it is diflicult to hold the lug strap and elements of the support'in position as the support is clamped, with a U-bolt or the like, to a picker stick.
With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates a lug strap support having an anchor plate with an arcuate flange providing a shelf on the lower edge and a rectangular shaped frame secured, such as by welding,
rates Patent 2,792,025 Patented 'May 14, 1957 on extended from the ends and the studs being positioned to extend into the openings of the anchor plate.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view illustrating the improved lug strap support.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the improved lug strap support showing the support mounted on a picker stick.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the lug strap support showing the device mounted on a picker stick with the picker stick shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan through the upper part of the lug strap support and picker stick showing the ends of a lug strap extended through the device.
Figure 5 is a vertical section through the metal parts of the lug strap support.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of a leather strap or tongue adapted to be inserted in a slot in the base of the anchor plate of the support.
Figure 7 is a front elevational view of the strap being taken on line 7--7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating the construction of the anchor plate and frame.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved lug strap support of this invention include an anchor plate 10 having an arcuate flange or shelf 11 extended from the lower edge and a rectangular shaped frame having a horizontally disposed bar 12 suspended from the lower to the lower surface of the arcuate flange of the anchor.
plate whereby the anchor plate and frame are integral, and clamping means for securing the anchor plate, frame, and a strap of resilient material in position upon a picker stick.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for simplifying the construction of lug strap supports by forming a frame for receiving a lug strap and an anchor plate for clamping the frame to a picker stick so that the parts are adapted to be installed as a unit.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for forming a lug strap support whereby the pull of the lug strap is taken directly by a leather tongue or strap positioned against an edge of a picker stick so that the possibility of wear resulting from sharp edges of the metal frame being clamped against the surface of the leather strap or tongue is eliminated.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved lug strap support wherein damage to a leather strap positioned against a picker stick is reduced to a minimum and in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention embodies an anchor plate having spaced openings for a U-bolt extended through the upper part, an elongated slot for a friction strap extended through the lower portion and an arcuate flange or shelf extended from the lower edge, a rectangular shaped frame depending from said arcuate shelf of the anchor plate, a tongue of leather or the like extended through the slot in the lower portion of the anchor plate, and a U-bolt having a flat body portion with threaded studs having nuts theresurface of the flange 11 with posts 13 and 14, and, as illustrated in Figure 3, a strap of leather or other suitable material providing a tongue 15 is positioned to extend through a slot 16 at the intersection of the anchor plate 10 and flange 11, as shown in Figures 5 and 8.
The lug strap support, as illustrated in the drawing, is adapted to be clamped to a picker stick, such as the stick 17, with a U-bolt, particularly of the design shown in Figure 2 wherein a flat strap 18 with threaded studs 19, and 20 extended from the ends extends around the picker stick with the studs 19 and 20 extended through openings 21 and 22, respectively, in the anchor plate. The studs 19 and 20 are provided with nuts 23 and spring lock washers 24 are positioned on the studs between the nuts and surface of the plate 10.
The horizontally disposed bar 12 on the lower side of the rectangular shaped lug strap receiving frame is formed with an arcuate upper surface, as indicated by the numeral 25, and the flange 11 is provided with a similar or arcuate lower surface 26 thereby providing smooth surfaces for engagement with a lug strap, which, as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, is indicated by the numeral 27.
The U-bolt for clamping the lug strap support to a picker stick may be of any suitable type or design.
In order to prevent the tongue 15 sliding through the slot 16, the upper end of the strap forming the tongue is provided with a thickening strip 28 that is secured to the upper edge of the tongue 15 with rivets or other fasteners, as indicated by the numeral 29.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 8, the edges 30 and 31 of the anchor plate 10 converge from the ends of the flange 11 to points 32 and 33 at the upper edge 34 of the plate and, as illustrated in Figure 3, with the anchor plate secured by the U-bolt to a picker stick the frame including the members 12, 13 and 14 is spaced from the surface of the picker stick providing clearance for a tongue or strap 15 of leather or the like.
With the parts assembled as shown and described, a lug strap extended through the rectangular shaped frame depending from the flange 11 of the anchor plate is positioned over a picker stick with the leather tongue 15 between the lug strap and stick providing frictional gripping means and with the parts in position the anchor plate is clamped to the picker stick with the U-shaped bolts 18 and'nuts 23 on the threaded studs 19 and 29. By this means, the lug strap support i directly anchored to the wood of the picker stick and the rectangular shaped lug strap holding frame is extended over the inner part of the lug strap whereby the entire load is transmitted directly to the picker stick from the lug strap and tongue instead of being transmitted by a metal frame to the tongue or other friction gripping means.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the part without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
