SAW-
SET.-
SPECIFICATION formi'ng' part of Letters Patent No. 279,140, dated June 12, 1883.
Application filcd February 28, 1883, (No model.)
To azZZ wham it may con/087%:
Be it known that I, J OHN T. EAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castana, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Iinp rovements in Saw-Sets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, aside elevation, partly in section; Fig. 3, a cross-section through line w w, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detail view, showing the connection of the gage with the standard.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in saw-sets, the object thereof being to provide such a device as will be simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and readily adjustable to any size saw, and to any angle to which the teeth are desired to be set, these objects being attained by the construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A represents a suitable standard, capable of being readily attached to a work-bench or other suitable support, said standard being formed with arms B O, between which is placed the saw, said arms being provided at their outer ends with set-screws a b, by which the angle of the saw is regulated and held. The arm B is formed at its inner end with a guide, c, for a plunger, D, having its lower end in the shape of a die, d, said plunger working in a "groove, e, upon. the inner face of the standard A, and through a guide, f, at the upper end thereof. The upper end of the standard is bifurcated, as shown in Fi'g. 1, the bifurcations forming boXes for the bearings of a crank, E, provided with a cam, g, re` volving between the said bifurcations. Followers h, operated by set-screws admit of the Vertical adjustment of the cam-crank to regulate the stroke of the plunger D, on which it acts, a spring, k, being placed around said plunger to carry it up again after the stroke has been effected. The arm C, at its point of juncture with the standard A, forms an anvil, Z, and upon the sides of said standard at this point are provided dovetailed slots m, for the reception of guides u, upon a gage, F, thns forming a close connection of said gage and standard to prevent lateral displacement or unevenness of these parts in relation to each other. A set-screw, G, having its bearing in a brace, 0, of the gage, and entering the rear of the standard, serves to secure the adjustment of said gage to any sized saw, said setscrew being provided with a jam-nut, 1).
In the operation of my invention the gage is adjusted to the size of the saw to be set, and said saw placed between the arms of the standard and adjusted to the proper 'angle by the set-screws therein. The saw is now moved along by the left hand, while the crank is operated with the right, each stroke of the plunger giving the tooth uponwhich it Strikes the proper set.
By the use of the Crank the operation is rendered easy and more regular than by the usually-employed means of striking the plunger with a hannner, or the use of a cam operated by the Vertical motion of lever-arm.
Having now fully described my invention, what I elaiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a saw-set, the standard A, formed with guide-arms B O, in ombination with the cam g, crank E, spring If, plunger D, screws aI b, and adjustable gage F, provided with guides a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN THOAS EAST.
