SLIDABLE SIDE JAW WRENCH Fiied July 21, 1955 INVENTOR. Paul ROSSI By Anclrgw .F'riedrich ATTORNEY SLIDABLE SIDE JAW WRENCH Paul Rossi, Warren, Ohio, and Andrew E. Friedrich, Princeton, N. L; said Friedrich assignor to said Rossi Application July 21, 1955, Serial No. 523,443
1 Claim. (Cl. 81-165) This invention relates to a crescent type wrench construction.
It is an'object of the present invention to provide in a crescent type wrench means for securing the nut between the jaws of the wrench as the wrench is turned and to prevent the wrench from slipping from the nut or bolt and wherein the retaining means is adjustable automatically with the adjustment of the jaws relative to each other for the different size nuts or bolt heads.
It is another object of the invention to provide in a crescent type wrench an enlarged head to provide weight upon the head so that it can be efiectively used for tapping a nut or bolt to loosen the same or in a hammer fashion to, in this way, add to the purpose of the wrench and to render it durable for this use without injury to the parts thereof.
It is another object of the invention to provide a crescent type wrench wherein the handle may be elevated from the jaw parts so that the use of the wrench may be had in a hole where the nut or bolt may be located and to elevate the handle from the body to which the nut or bolt is attached and so that the hand and fingers can lie under the handle of the wrench when working the wrench and allowing for flush contact of the jaws with the nut or bolt.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a crescent type wrench construction wherein the jaws can be attached to a nut or bolt and the handle pivoted upon the jaws for vertical movement to any number of different adjusted elevated positions and to allow room for the hand under the handle while working the wrench.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide in a wrench having an enlarged jaw head wherein the engaging surfaces of the head with the surface of the work body in which the bolt or nut is fitted, will cause the handle to be extended upwardly at an angle to the work body surface.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a crescent type wrench construction, having the above objects in mind, which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, durable, compact, easy to operate and adjust, of pleasing appearance, effective and efiicient in use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the crescent type wrench embodying the features of the present invention according to one form thereof;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top elevational view of the wrench with portions broken away to show the interior construction thereof;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the wrench showing the tapered head construction and looking upon the side of the wrench that has the movable jaw;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention wherein the handle is pivotally connected to the jaw elements to permit the same to be elevated from the work body;
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 6.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, 10 represents a fixed jaw part or head to which a handle 11 is integrally connected. The shape of this jaw part is such as to provide opposite faces 12 and 13 which are inclined and converge toward the outer end of the jaw body whereby to increase the weight of the wrench providing a thick, heavy head portion so that it may be used to tap or strike bolts or nuts or even to straighten small pieces of material upon a fiat surface. Journalled in this fixed jaw part is a hand operated worm 14 that engages rack teeth 15 of a movable jaw part 16 slidable in the fixed jaw part 10 and in a slot 17 provided therein. This movable jaw has an inclined extension 18, inclined from the longitudinal axis of the movable jaw and which engages with an adjustable nut retaining member 19 by extending through an opening 20 of the member 19 so that as the movable jaw is adjusted, the nut engaging member 19 or slide will be correspondingly moved to accommodate either the smaller or larger nut. The nut engaging member 19 has an inwardly extending shoulder 21 that will engage the nut in the manner as shown in Fig. 1. This nut engaging member 19 is slidable in a slot or recess 22 in the fixed jaw member 10 that serves to retain and guide the member 19 as it is adjusted. The inclined extension 18 extends into a recess 23. The opposite surfaces of the movable jaw 16 are likewise inclined similarly to the inclined surfaces 12 and 13 of the fixed jaw memher or head so that as the wrench is used, it can rest about the nut or bolt on one of the surfaces 12 and 13 and such as 'to extend the handle 11 in an inclined position and upwardly so as to permit the hand of the user to surround the handle for a good grip thereon and without interference from the surface of the work body. The wrench can be used on either face and at the same time it can be used for tapping a nut or bolt head or for working on pieces of material upon a flat surface to straighten them.
The projection 21 will engage the nut which may be of either square or hexagonal shape and as the wrench is used, there is no chance of the same slipping ofi. the nut or bolt head. The fixed jaw member has an inclined face 23 and the movable jaw member has a differently inclined face 2 5 intersecting with the inclined face 23. These inclined faces, which are oppositely inclined, will accommodate a hexagonal nut or bolt head.
In Fig. 6 and in Fig. 7, there is shown a modified form of the invention. According to this form of the invention a fixed jaw or head part 26 is provided with parallel side faces and a keyway slot 27 into which a rack portion 28 of a movable jaw 29 extends to be worked by a hand worm 30 journalled in the jaw 26. The jaw 26 has a hinge projection 31 to which spaced hinge portions 32 and 33 of an upwardly offset handle 34 are hingedly connected by a hinge pin 35. This upwardly offset handle 34 permits the lowering of the head part into an opening in the work body in such a manner that the hand can be extended about the handle without the fingers engaging with the surface of the work body and so that the tool can be turned without the hand engaging with the surface of the work body. A nut holding or engaging slide 36 is operable in a recess 37 in the same manner as above described in connection with the first form of the in- Patented'May 7, 1957 vention. This slide has a projection 38 for engaging the nut. The fixed jaw 26 has an inclined face 39 and the movable jaw 29 has an inclined face 40 that intersects with the face 39 of the fixed jaw 26. These faces will accommodate adjacent sides of a hexagonal nut or bolt head.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided in a crescent type wrench means whereby a wrench will be held upon a nut or bolt head as it is used and without slipping from the same, It will be further ap parent that added weight has been given to the wrench by virtue of the inclined faces so that the wrench can be used to tap bolts and nut heads and as well be used to act on pieces resting on a fiat surface for the purpose of straightening them.
It will also, be apparent that adequate provision has been made in both forms of the wrench to elevate the handle so that a good grip can be had on the same when working upon a flat bodied surface or upon the wrench' head lying in a depression in which the nut or bolt head may be disposed.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A wrench construction comprising a fixed jaw part, a movable jaw part adjustable in the fixed jaw part, a nut or bolt head engaging member slidable in the fixed jaw part and means operable in response to movement of the movable jaw part for adjusting the nut or bolt head engaging member, said means for adjusting the nut engaging member comprising an extension upon the movable jaw part inclined to the direction of adjustment of the movable jaw part in the fixed part and said nut or bolt head engaging member having an opening through which the inclined extension passes to work the nut or bolt head engaging member automatically as the movable jaw part is adjusted.
