SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,112, dated June 5, 1883.

Be it known that we, Osonn H. WoonwARn and ORRIN L. WooDwARn, citizens of the United States, resident at Clinton Junction, in

5 the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Co1nbination-Locks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX-' act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of the lock in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the interior of the lock. Fig. 3 is a-transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detail.

This invention has relation to combinationloeks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a lock-case,-.-having bearings aand a for the reciprocating keys 1?, the ends I) of which extend outside of the case. These keys are arranged in series parallel to each other, and are provided with springs c, which act to restore them to their original position after they have been moved in operating the look.

In the drawings the keys are numbered from right to left. Each key is provided with a peg or pegs, 6?, extending from its side or sides.

E represents a lever or pivoted plate, which extends transversely under the shanks of the keys B, and is pivoted to the lockcase. This plate-lever is provided with pegs 6, extending at right angles to its surface, and arranged in lateral relation to the keys, and in such posi- 40 tions that the-lateral pegs of the keys will engage the same in succession when said keys are operated one after the other, in accordance with the combination on which the lock is set.

plate E is moved sufficiently to operate a retracting device engaging the lock-bolt L. This retracting device may be either a cam-slide, as indicated at G, adapted to engage a shoulder on the lock-bolt, or an independent lever, K, may be employed, the latter being preferred. The lever-plate may be cast with projections or lugs, and the keys may also have the lateral projections formed thereon, as indicated in the drawings. The lock-bolt is provided with a spring, m, and the plate-lever with a spring, 3, which is designed to cause it to assume its original position after the keys are released.

These locks may be made to operate according to difi'erent combinations. In Fig. 2 the third key is first operated, moving the platelever sufliciently to permit the engagement of the lateral stud of the second key with one of its projections, and when this key is operated the lever-plate is brought into proper position. for the engagement of one of its projections \Vhen this key is pressed it causes the lever E to engage the lever K, operating the same and re traeting the locking-bolt L. The keys may be reversed and interchanged to render other combinations effective in operating the lock.

Having described this fiwention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a lock, the combination, with a studded plate-lever having a retracting-spring, of 1aterallystudded reciprocating keys having retracting-springs, the lock-bolt and its spring, and the retracting-lever engaging the lock bolt, substantially as specified.
