(Cl. 15-97) This invention relates generally to shoe cleaning apparatus and is more particularly concerned with shoe me shining apparatus which includes a reciprocating shine cloth supported in overlying relationship on the toe of. a shoe supported on a horizontal pivotal foot member and including means for reciprocating the shine cloth in frictional. shining engagement with the toe of the shoe in response to horizontal pivotal actuation of. the foot memher by a' person desiring his shoe to be shined.

The shoe toe shining apparatus is'indicated generally at it)" and'includes a' suitable elongated support base 1 member 12 which maybe fixedly secured on a support surface ifidesired, said support base having extending upwardlyfrom an intermediate portion thereof and secured in any suitable manner a transverse fulcrum or pivot member l i which includes an upper converging pivot surface-portion 16. A pair of vertical support elements 26 and 28 are suitablysecured'by means of a suitable fastener 30 and vertical slots 32 extending. through oppositely disposed portions of. the side edges 34 and 36 of the support base 12, said slots being disposed intermediate the for ward edge portion 24 of the foot board member, and the fulcrummember 16. It will be noted that the slots 32 are of a slightly greater width than the vertical sup port element 26 thus permitting a slight amount of oscillation of the fastening element 30.
A first forcetransmitting lever 38 is intermediately pivoted by means of a suitable pivot element 40' to the upper end of the vertical support element 28, and has an. endportion 42 pivotally secured by means of. a suitable securing element 44 to the side edge 46 of the foot board member. Thus when the forward end 24 of. the foot board is pivoted downwardly the end 42 of the force transmitting lever 38 will accordingly move downwardly therewith, said lever 38 pivoting about the pivot element 40 and the forwardly extending end portion. 48' of said lever 38 will move upwardly.
' A first U-shaped actuating lever is indicated generally at 50 and includes a bight portion 52 which is pivotally oscillatable with the force transmitting lever 38, said bight portion 52 terminating in a. pair of relatively parallel legtmembers 54 and 56, said leg member 54 extending, beneath the forward end portion 24 of the foot member, and said. leg member 56 extending in spaced parallel. relationship to the side edge 46 of said foot member. Thus the previously mentioned downward movement of the forward end. portion of the foot board member when engaging the leg member 54 results in pivoting the actuating lever 50 horizontally about the bight portion 52' when the leg member 54 engages the 'undersurface portion of the forward end of the foot member, and accordingly results in. urging the leg member 56 in a downward. direction accompanying the downward. movement of the forward end. portion of the foot member.
A gripping member 58'is utilized for retaining the force transmitting lever 38 and the actuating lever 50 in a relatively fixed position, said gripping element including a centrally disposed bore portion 60, see Figure 6, terminating. in a radial slot 62 extending to the outer surface of the element 58, said element 58 including a transverse slot 64 intersecting the previously mentioned bore'portion and slot portion 60 and 62, respectively, the slot: 62 permitting the e1ement58 to he slipped over the bight portion 52 of'the actuating lever while the slot 64 permitting the same slipping mdvement over the end portion of the force transmitting lever 38.
The element'58 may be formed from any suitable friction increasing material such as rubber of any suitable character, and extends over that portion of the bight portion 52 of the actuating lever 50 which is rotatably 4 received in a suitable aperture portion 66 in the end 58 ofithe force transmitting lever 38'. The. element 58 tends to retain a relatively fixed position between the previously mentioned levers 38 and 50, and may be removed. to
permit a legmember 56 of the lever 50 to be adjusted toward. and away from the side edge 46 of the foot member, this adjustment being for the purpose of ac- The leg, member- 56 has secured thereon suitablecoil spring fastening elements 68 which incorporate an upper portion 70'wl1ich is sharpened to penetrate through the end 72 of a suitable shining cloth of any suitable mate a i- The side edge 46 of the foot board includes a vertically disposed notch portion 76 accommodating the vertical support element 28 therein and permitting a slight amount of oscillatory movement about the pivot element 40 when the foot board element is pivoted about the fulcrum member 14.
A second force transmitting lever 78 is intermediately pivoted on a suitable pivot element 80 at the top of the other vertical support element 26 which is accommodated in a vertically disposed notch portion 82 extending in the other side edge 84 of the foot board member. At one end 85 thereof the lever 78 is pivotally secured by means of a suitable fastening element 88 on the side edge 84 of the foot board member in transversely disposed relationship to the pivot element 44 for the first transmitting lever 38. The lever 78 extends forwardly beyond the forward edge portion 24 of the foot board board member and terminating short of the leg member 54 of the actuating lever 50. The second force transmitting lever 78 by virtue of the pivot elements 80 and '88 will move through the same pivotal movement as i the lever 38, i. e. when the forward end of the foot board member 24 is lowered the portion 86 of the lever 78 will be raised inasmuch as the end 85 of the lever 78 will be moving downwardly with said forward end portion.
It will be noted that the ends 42 and 85 of the respective levers 38 and 78 are respectively pivotally supported on the elements 44 and 88 intermediate the vertical suplever 90 includes a forward end portion 94 accommodating in a suitable aperture portion a horizontal pivotal second U-shaped actuating lever 96 which includes the bight portion 98 pivotally supported in said end 94 of the lever 90, said bight portion terminating in a pair of relatively parallel leg members l and 102, the leg member 100 extending beneath the angulated end portion 86 of the force transmitting lever 78, and the leg member 102 extending in spaced parallel relationship to member and terminates in an angulated end portion 86 l extending across the forward end portion 24 of ,the foot the edge 84 of the foot board member as does the leg I 56 of the actuating lever 50.
A gripping element 58 extends over the end portion 94 of the lever 90 and the bight portion 98 as does the gripping element 58 relative to the bight portion 52 and the'end 48 of the force transmitting lever 38. The leg member 102 has suitably secured thereon a pair of longitudinally spaced fastening elements 68 similar to those on leg member 56 of the first actuating lever, said fastening elements 68 on the leg member 102 being suitably secured in the other end 104 of the shine cloth 74;
A suitable clip element 106 having end portions 108 and 110 circumposed and secured to the leg member 100 of the actuating lever 96 and the portion 86 of the force transmitting lever, respectively, permits the leg member 100 to be pulled or moved upwardly about the bight portion 98 pivotally supported in the end 94 of the lever 90 when the force transmitting lever is moved upwardly.
Inasmuch as the lever 90 is fixedly secured to theedge 84 of the foot board member, the end 94 of said lever willmove in whichever direction the forward end portion of the foot board member is being pivoted. Thus when the forward end portion 24 of the foot board member is moved upwardly and carries with it the end 94 of the lever 90, and the end 85 of the force transmitting member 78 and accordingly the lever portion 86 of the lever 78 will move downwardly into abutting and force applying relationship with the leg member 100 moving that leg member and the leg member 102 downwardly thus reciprocably moving the shine cloth 74 in the direction of the downward movement of the leg member 102.
When the forward end portion 24 of the foot board member is moved downwardly this results in force transmitting lever portion 86 in moving upwardly as previously mentioned, by virtue of the fastening element 106 this pulls the leg member 102 upwardly and at the same time the leg member 56 of the first actuating lever is moving downwardly for reciprocating the shine cloth in the direction of thatdownward movement.
The shine cloth 74 may be moved toward or away from the forward edge 24 of the foot board member by virtue of the fastening element 68, and will be of sufficient width to accommodate the toe of a shoe thereunder, and by virtue of the removable gripping means 58 relative to the bight portions of the actuating levers the leg members 56 and 102 of said levers may be moved toward or away from the side edges 46 and 84, respectively, of the foot board member for affording more or less slack in the shine cloth for accommodating shoes of a greater or lesser height on the foot board member.
Accordingly there has been disclosed a shoe toe shining device which fully conforms with the objects of invention heretofore set forth.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention 'to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. In a shoe polishing apparatus, a base, a pedal pivotally mounted on said base and having a vertically rockable front portion, a lever extending along one side of said front portion with a front end projecting forwardly of said front portion, said lever having a rear end pivoted to said front portion and being pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said base for rocking of its front end oppositely with respect to the direction of rocking "rocking in correspondence therewith and having a front end extending forwardly of said front portion, first and second U-shaped members having bight portions and a pair of legs respectively, means journaling said bight portions on the front ends of said first and second named levers with one leg of each member extending rearwardly along each side of said front portion and whereby ,said members are vertically movable bodily in reverse directions relatively by said first and second levers and pivotally swingable vertically thereon, said front portion overlying the other leg of one member to swing said a member in one direction, means on said front portion operatively connected to the other leg of the other member for swinging said other member in the opposite direction in response to rocking of said front portion, and
a shoe shining cloth extending over said front portion and connected to the legs extending along said front portion for reciprocation thereby.
2. Apparatus as in claim 1, said bight portions being slidably adjustable in said journal means to variably space said members apart for taking upslack in said cloth.
3. In a shoe polishing apparatus, a base, a pedal pivotally mounted on said base and having a vertically rockable front portion, first and second levers extending along opposite sides of said front portion with front ends projecting forwardly of said front portion, said levers having rear ends pivoted to said front portion and being pivotally mounted intermediate their ends for vertical rocking of their front ends oppositely with respect to the direction of rocking of said front portion, a third lever extending along and fixed to one side of said front portion for rocking in correspondence therewith and having a front end projecting forwardly of said front portion, first and second U-shaped members having bight portions and a pair of long and short legs respectively, means journaling the bight portions of said first and second members on the front ends of said first and third levers with the long legs of said members extending rearwardly alongside said front portion and whereby said members are vertically movable bodily in reverse directions relatively by said first and third levers and pivotally swingable vertically thereon, said front portion overlying the short leg of one member to swing the same in one direction, said second lever being operatively connected to the other short leg to swing the other member in the opposite direction, and a shoe shining cloth extending over said front portion and attached to said long legs for reciprocation by said long legs in response to swinging of said members.
