The side plates 44 thus function to impart swinging movement to the legs 40, the foot extension 46, and to the front panel 55 to dispose the legs 40 in parallel relation with the side rails 33 and 34 of the outer section 17 and the foot extension in the out-of-the-way position as shown in Fig. 3 `of the drawings when the said section is folded into overlying spaced relation with the intermediate section 19. The panel 55 is moved into position above the front panel 15 with the movement of the outer section into collapsed -relation within the furniture frame.
As a further feature of the invention, the side plates 44 engage latch members 63 pivoted to the vertical flanges of the side rails of Ithe intermediate section 19 on pivot pins 64 for automatically latching the outer section in fixed seat forming relation. Latching of the outer section in this manner prevents downward movement thereof when in collapsed relation .to serve as a seat. The weight imposed thereon when serving asa seat is transmitted to the furniture frame so as to eliminate the weight on the seat from compressing the sections of the mattresses M and N arrangedl in superimposed relation between the outer and the intermediate sections. For this purpose, the side plates 44 `are provided with slots 65 in which the tongues 68 of the latch members 63 automatically engage incident to the folding of the outer sectioninto overlying relation with the intermediate section 19. The latch members are urged into latched engagement with the side plates 44 by springs 69 which tension the latch members in engagement therewith and maintain the heels of the latch members in engagement with stop4 lugs 70 projecting outwardly from the sides of the side rails 25 and 26 of the intermediate section 19. rThe latch members 63 @are swung out of engagement with the side plates 44 by latch release arms 72 which engage lugs 73 projecting outwardly from the sides of the latch members incident to the outward movement of the sections from the collapsed relation in the furniture frame.
The intermediate section 20 is maintained in aligned relation with the intermediate section 19 when the sections are in bed forming relation by means of links 75 which are pivoted to the inside faces of the vertical flanges of the `side `rails 30 and 31 of the intermediate section ron pivot pins 76 and at their opposite ends the said links have pin and slot connection 77 with the vertical flanges of the side Irails 25 and 26 of the intermediate section 19. The links 75 also `function to limit the turning 'movement of the intermediate section 19 ybeyond the upright position shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings `when the outer section 17 is moved into overlying relation with the intermediate section 19.
The legs 41 are pivoted to the intermediate sections 19 and 20 on the pivot pins 32 which pivotally connect the said sections together. The legs 41 are swung into parallel relation with the intermediate section 19 with the movement of the sections into collapsed relation with the furniture frame as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. ln order to swing the sections into collapsed relation, the inner section 18 is swingably connected with the side panels 13 and 14 of the furniture frame 10 by means of links 79 which are pivotally connected at -their upper ends on pivot pins 80 to brackets 81 riveted or otherwise affixed to the inside faces of the side panels 13 and 14 and at their lower ends the said links :are pivotally connected to the vertical anges, of the side rails 22 and 23 of the inner section 18 on pivot pins 82. The links 79 are swingably connected with links 83 by means of links 84 and the links 83 Iare swingably connected with the legs 41 by means of links 85 and 86. The llinks 83 are pivotally connected Ito the outer faces of the side rails 23 and 24 of the inner section 18 on pivot pins 88 and are pivotally connected to the links 42 on pivot pins 89, The links 83 projectinwardly beyond the pivotal connections 88 with the inner ends thereof pivotally connected to the links 84 on pivot pins 90, the inner ends of the links 84 being pivotally connected to the links 79 on pivot pins 91. The outer ends of the links 83 are pivotally connected `to the links on pivot pins 92, the links 85 being of bent formation and pivotally connected to the side rails 25 'and 26 of the intermediate section 19 on pivot pins 93 with the lower ends of said links being pivotally connected with the links 86 on pivot pins 94. The outer ends of the links 86 are pivotally connected to the side faces of the legs 41 on pivot pins 95.
ln order to swing the intermediate section 19 to lowered position within the furniture frame, the links 42 are atiixed to an arm 97 which is pivoted to the inside faces of the side panels 13 and 14 of the furniture frame on pivot pins 98. The arms 97 are tensioned by coil springs 99 connected to the upper ends thereof and to the side panels 13 and 14 of the furniture frame for facilitating the swinging of the foldable frame into collapsed relation within the furniture frame.
The latch release arms 72 are pivoted to the outer faces of the links 83 on pivot pins 101 and said arms have springs 102 connected to the upper ends thereof and to the links 83 which urge the arms to swing upwardly `to normally maintain lugs 103 extending inwardly therefrom in engagement with the lower edges of the links 83. The latch release arms are so positioned with reference to the lugs 73 of the latch members that with the inward collapsing motion of the sections into the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the arms swing forwardly over the tops 0f the said lugs and with the initial outward movement from the collapsed position, the said arms swing rearwardly past the said lugs and as the intermediate section 19 approaches horizontal relation with the outward movement thereof, the arms engage beneath the lugs 73 to rock the latch members on the pivots 64 `to thereby swing the same out of latched engagement with the side plates 44.
The intermediate section 19 is provided with brackets 104 and 105 laflixcd to the outer faces of the side rails 25 and 26 thereof with which the links 83 and 85 slidably engage to prevent inward bending of the said links with the movement of the foldable frame to and from folded relation. The brackets 104 have supporting edges 106 on which the bottom edges of the links 83 have bearing engagementwhen the sections are in'bed forming 'relation so as to prevent downward movement ofthe inner section out of alignment with the rentaining sections when weight is imposed thereon.
The cross bar 36 protrudes below the side rails 33 and 34 of the outer section 17 lwhenin bed forming relation and when the section is in collapsed relation within the furniture frame for supporting one or more seat cushions. The said cross bar extends above the section as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings to serve as a stop to prevent inward movement of the seat cushions.
The Wire mesh 37 is connected with the side rails 25 and 26 of the long intermediate section 19 by coil springs 107 alternately arranged with straight links 108. The remaining portion of the said edges are connected with the side rails of the remaining sections by coil springs 107. rfhe outer end of the wire mesh spring is also connected with the cross bar 36 by coil springs 197 while the inner end thereof is connected with the cross bar 24 by straight links 193. This construction prevents undue flexing of the spring in the region of the long intermediate section.
