CHARLES T. SHAFER, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
FOUNTAIN PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,025, dated June 5, 1883. 'Applicationled January'ili, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: Y
Beit known that I, CHARLES T, SHAFER., of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fountain Pen-Holders; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full, clear, and exact .description of the same.
Fountain pens and holders, or pens in which the holder is made the receptacle for carrying the supply of ink, are in common use, and I do not propose to claim, broadly, such a holder.
`With my invention any kind of a pen-steel, gold, or otherwise-can be used, and any iiuid ink can be used, and the flow of ink regulated at will without the use of' spirals, sieves, or springs.
That others may fully understand vmy invention, I will particularly describe it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- 1- Figure I is an elevation, parts of the holder being in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an Figs. 3 and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal to be inclosed.
C is the barrel or tube constituting the inkholder of' the pen. The top is open, and provided with thread and screw plug or top A to make an air-tight stopper. It also has a small hole or port, P, at bottoni, or side'near the bottom, for the discharge of ink to the pen. D is a tube fitting closely over tube C up to point G, having also a small hole or port, P',
at bottom of tube, or near the bottom, corresponding in position with the port I). E is a tight-tting sleeve, open at both ends, and used to slip over D to receive and hold the pen. B is a loose or free weight, having a specific gravity greater than that of the ink, inelosed within the ink-barrel C. These parts A, B, C, D,
- andl can be made of any desired material or shape suitable for the purpose.
The method of using my invention is as follows: The weight Bis put in the tube C. The
tube D is then fitted over the tube C, and so placed that the holes IJ and IJ do not register with each other. The tube 'C'is filled with ink and the plug ce is screwed intoA top of said tube. The pen-holder E and pen F being adjusted on the tube D in such position that the hole l? is opposite the median line of the pen, said tube D is turned so that the holes l? and drive a drop of' ink through the .ports P P and down tothe point of the pen. This plunger effect is independent of the quantity of ink in the reservoir, and by it the last drop may be driven out., This operation may be repeated as often as may benecessary to cause a steady supply of ink.
I am aware that a fountain pen-holder has i been provided with a close-fitting fioat or pis` ton of less specficl gravity than the ink, to
maintain a separation between the ink and thef open air-space inthe top of the holder. That is essentially different from my invention, be-
cause, first, I do not admit air at the top of my reservoir as ink is discharged to the pen, andi therefore I have no need for a floating separa# i tor; second, it is manifest that a iioat having l less specific gravity than the ink cannot add` to the plunger action of the column of ink itselfwhen the pen is shaken up and down, whereasv my weight, being indefinitely heavier than the ink, will act as a plunger independent of the ink.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is'W f I. In a fountain pen-holder, the combination, with the pen section and barrel or reservoir provided with a port through which ink may be driven to the pen, of a loose plunger or weight of greater specific gravity than the ink, whereby the ink may be driven through said port when the pen is shaken up and down.
2. The combination, in 'a fountain pen-holder, of a barrel, C, having a port, I), a sleeve, D, fitted thereto, and provided with a corresponding port, P', means whereby an ordinary writing-pen may be attached to said holder,
and a loose plunger-weight, B, inclosed within said barrel, for the purpose set forth.
