April 23, 1957 G. M. FERRI SELF-ADJUSTING coslvlmrc STICK CONTAINER Filed April 17, 1956 TTQVEYS SELF-ADJUSTING COSMETIC STICK CONTAINER Geno M. Ferri, Plymouth, Mass.
Application April 17, 1956, Serial No. 578,746
4 Claims. (Cl. 206-56) This invention relates generally to cosmetic applicators and is more particularly concerned with a self-adjusting cosmetic stick container.
A primary object of invention is to provide a cosmetic stick container which constantly presents a predetermined length of the cosmetic stick available for use when a removable cover member is removed therefrom.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide in a novel cosmetic stick container of the character involved a protective sleeve member which is movable when the cover member is removed from the container whereby the cosmetic stick is presented in an extended and protected position for use.
And yet another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide in a cosmetic stick conrainer of the character involved means wherbey the cover member of the container may be actuated for the purpose of extending the cosmetic stick to a predetermined length for subsequent use.
And yet another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide in a cosmetic stick container of the character involved means whereby the protective sleeve member may be actuated permitting the removal of a used cosmetic stick wherein the same may be replaced by an unused cosmetic stick.
And yet a still further object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel cosmetic stick container which is readily and economically manufacture-d, easily used, and highly satisfactory and acceptable for the purpose intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refere to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is an elevational view of the novel cosmetic stick container with a portion broken away and shown in section;
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the novel cosmetic stick container, with portions broken away and shown in section for clarity;
Figure 3 is a further enlarged vertical sectional view of the novel cosmetic stick container taken substantially on line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a vertical elevational view `of the tubular cosmetic stick carrier member of the novel container;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on line 5--5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 6 6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the novel cosmetic stick container which will be described as being used as a lipstick dispenser, being also usable as a shaving stick or deodorant stick dispenser, for example, is indicated generally at 10, said container including a tubular casing `member 12, a base member 14, a tubular cosmetic stick nited States Patent carrier member 16, a cosmetic stock element 18, a protective sleeve member 20 and a removable cover member 22.
As clearly seen in Figure 3, the tubular casing member 12 includes an elongated tubular body portion 24 having a lower crimped edge portion 26 and an upper tapered end portion 28. The body portion 24 of the casing member has extending longitudinally through one side portion thereof an elongated transverse guide slot portion 30, the purpose of which will subsequently become apparent.
The base member 14 includes -a bottom portion 32 having extending from one surface thereof an annular flange portion 34 which extends into the lower end of the body portion 24 of the casing member which includes an annular groove thereabout into which the crimpededge 26 is secured. The upper edge portion of the flange 34 indicated at 36 provides a lateral abutment shoulder portion. The bottom portion 32 of the base member includes an outwardly extending peripheral lower flange portion 38 which may terminate in an annular collar portion 40 substantially parallel to portion 34 of said base member and defining therebetween an annular groove 42 extending about portion 34.
The cosmetic stick carrier member 16 includes a tubular body member 44 constructed of a suitable resilient material, said body member 44 terminating at its lower edge in an annular ange portion 46 which may be slidably engageable with the inner periphery of the body portion 24 of the casing member. The body portion 44 has extendng through a side wall portion thereof a longitudinally extending upwardly opening elongated notch portion 4S which extends substantially the entire length thereof, see Figure 4, opening into the upper edge S0 of said body portion 44. Extending about an intermediate outer peripheral portion of the body member 44 is a camm-ing flange 52 which is interrupted by the previously mentioned notch portion 48, said flange portion 52 including an inwardly tapered upper edge portion 54 which is engageable with the inner surface of the portion 28 of the body portion 24 of the casing member. A compression spring 56, such as a coil spring shown in Figure 3, is interposed between the ange 46 and the abutment shoulder 36 of the carrier member 16 and base member 14 which is integral with the casing member 12, said spring 56 being effective to urge the casing member outwardly or upwardly as seen in Figure 3, wherein the camming ange 52 will engage the under surface of the portion 28 previously mentioned resulting in inward distortion of the body portion or side walls of the carrier member inasmuch as said carrier member is formed of resilient material. This movement of the side walls of the carrier member will reduce the diameter thereof for the purpose of retaining a cosmetic stick element 18 in a relatively fixed adjusted position within the carrier member 16, this adjustment to subsequently be described in detail.
The cosmetic element 18 comprises a stick of cosmetic material 58 suitably secured in a cap member 60 forming a replaceable cosmetic cartridge. The cosmetic element 1S is reciprocably disposed within the carrier member 16, and a second compression spring 62 is interposed between an inner surface portion of the bottom 32 of the base member 14 and the under-surface portion of the cap member 60. The compression spring 62 is a coil spring which is concentrically disposed within the previously mentioned spring 56, the spring 56 being of a greater strength than the spring 62 and the application of pressure on the bottom of the carrier member 16 results in the distortion of the side walls thereof as previously described wherein the cap member 60 and the cosmetic stick 58 therein will be retained in a relatively fixed position within said carrier member. When the pressure of the spring 56 is relieved, as subsequently will be Vprinciples of the invention.
described, the compression 'spring 62 will be effective to urge the cosmetic stick element 18 out of the carrier member 16.
The protective sleeve member 20 includes a tubular body member 64 concentrioally disposed on the casing member 12, said body member 64 terminating in an inwardly turned annular ange portion 66 overlying the upperredge Si) of the carrier member, and includes on its lower edge an annular ange portion d8 which is of a suili'cient width to be received in the previously mentioned annular groove portion i2 in the bottom portion 14 of the container. The body portion 64 of the protective sleeve member includes an inwardly extending lateral abutment element 70 which is slidingly received in the previously mentioned slot portion 3i) in the body portion 24 of the casing member. Down'ward movement of the protective sleeve feber `will overcome the cornpressien 'spring 56 wherein 'the wall portion of the car- 'riei' `'rii'fL-niber 16 will be permitted to assume its normal coniigui'ti'n shown in Figure 4, and when disposed in this position the cosmetic stick element 18 may be removed in toto by virtue of the pressure of the compression spring 62, this procedure b'eing utilized when it is desired to 'replace a new cosmetic cartridge for one that is no longer usable.
The cover member 22 includes a body portion 72 which is circumposed about the protective sleeve member 20 the lower edge portion 74 of which being engageable with the 4ilange 68 of the protective sleeve member, said body portion 72 including a closed top portion 76 which overlies the stick of cosmetic stick 5'8. When the cover member 22 is depressed urging the protective sleeve member 2t) downwardly into the previously mentioned annular groove l2 the compression spring 62 will be effective to urge the cosmetic element 18 upwardly into engagement with the undersurtace portion of the top of the cover member, and depending upon the distance between the top of the cover member and ange 66 of the protective sleeve member, this will be the length of the cosmetic material available for use. Thus whenever the cover member is disposed on the sleeve member depression of the same will always permit the compression spring 62 to present a given length of cosmetic material to be available for use.
`When the cover member 22 is drawn off of the protective sleeve member, the sleeve member will be drawn upwardly therewith as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 3, until the abutment element 70 vof the protective sleeve Vreaches the upper limit of the slot 30 in the casing member, thus, when the cover member 22 is removed the protective sleeve member will surround the usable portion of the cosmetic preventing accidental contact therewith. The protective sleeve member then can be slid or disposed below -the cosmetic material 58 and used in a normal manner, 'and after such use may be again disposed inthe dotted line position shown in Figure 3 and the cover member vcan then `be replaced, this latter disposition of the protective sleeve member .preventing accidental contact with the cosmetic material.
Thus there has been disclosed a novel cosmetic stick container which fully conforms with the objects of invention heretofore set forth.
Various positional directional termssuch as innen outcry etc. utilized herein to have only a relative connotation to aid in describing the device and it is not intended to require any particular orientation with respect to any external elements.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and dcscribed, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within 'the scope of the appended claims.
