HORACE \V. N ORXVOOD, ()F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE NORVFOOD SPARK PREVENTIVE AND SMOKE CONSUMING COMPANY,
OF CAMDEN, NEV JERSEY,
DRAFT-REGULATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,814, dated June 5, 1883.
Application filed November 9, Iss2.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE XV. NoRwooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regul'ators, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation, partly sectional, of
a locoinot-iveengine illustrating my improvements applied thereto. Fig.2 is a plan, partly sectional, of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective.
My invention has relation to locomotive-engines, and has for its object to provide means for obtaining a constant and even draft for the fire or furnace.
My invention accordingly consists of the provision of an air-tight ash-box having a perforated or slotted tube attached thereto which communicates at one end with an air-injector and at its opposite end with a pipe leading to the smoke-stack, whereby a current or supply of air is injected into the ash-box to feed the fire, and another current is passed into the smokestack to produce a draft in the stack and flues to prevent back-pressure when the furnace; doors are opened.
My invention further consists of a regulator placed before the exit-openings of the boilerflues in the smoke-arch; and it consists of two hinged plates adapted to be moved or adjusted by lever mechanism under the control of the engineer, whereby, when desired, said regulator is adjusted to vary the draft for the furnace; or it may be completely opened in order to facilitate the cleansing or blowing out of the boiler-fines.
My invention still further consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a locomotive boiler or engine, B, the fire or furnace box; 0, the boiler-fines; D, the s1noke-stack;andE the air-tight ash-box. The latter is provided with a fixed transverse or other suitably-located pipe, 6, slotted or perforated, as indicated at c, Fig. 3.
(X0 model.)
| I Loosely surrounding pipe 6 is a pipe or cutoff, F, correspondingly slotted or perforated,
as shown at f, Fig. 2, and is provided with a handle or lever, f, projecting through a slot (or otherwise suitably disposed) in the wall 6'' 5 5 of the ash-box, so as to be within easy reach of the engineer or the fireman, whereby when said handle or lever is raised or lowered the pipe F is rotated about pipe e to effect a 1 registration or non-registration of their respective slots or perforations.
To the end 6 of pipe 6 is secured a cone, G, having a bar or bearing, 9, for injector H, to provide an airinlet or opening between said cone and llljQClOl' fiS shown in Fig. 2. The inj ector has an airpipe, 71, and a steam-connection, h, with boiler or steam-dome thereof. The opposite end of pipe 6 connects with atube, I, i which leads into the smoke-stack, as shown at 1 Figs. 1 and 2.
To the exit-openings of the exhaust-ports a A is secured a pipe, K, which consists of telescoping pipes 7; and k. The latter is provided with a flaring perforated or slotted end, k and is held in its adjusted position by a set-screw, k.
L represents a regulator located in the smokearch, in front of the boiler-fines O, and consists of two. semicircular plates, Z Z, hinged at Z Z to the boiler-covering, and have toggle or lever connections Z Z with a rod, M, under the con trol of the engineer or his attendant, whereby as the rod M is moved the regulator L is opened or closed to vary the draft as desired.
The operation is as follows: Steam being ad mitted to the injector H, a current of air is forced into pipe 6, the supply therefor being drawn through pipe h and cone G. The handle f being operated to effect a registration of slots in pipes e and F, a portion of such air passes to the furnace, while the remainder is conducted through pipe I to the smoke-stack, the result whereof is that a draft is created in the stack and boiler-fines and the furnace is supplied with air. The air from pipe I passing into the smoke-stack maintains a regular and uninterrupted draft for the fire when the furnace-doors are open thereby preventing the action of back-pressure from the air-supply in the ash-pan. To vary the force or degree of draft for the furnace, or when the boiler Ice fiues are to be blown out, the bar M is moved to adjust the regulator L. It will thus be seen that a draft is produced which is unaffected by the escape of the exhaust-steam, for the rea son that the latter passes up pipe K and es capes from the stack without influencing such draft. If, however, it is desired to make use of such steam in a modified degree, the tube 7. is lowered to such extent that the steam escaping therefrom will influence or increase the furnace-draft,- the degree of such influence being regulated by the extent to which the pipe 7." is lowered.
hat- I claim is 1. In' effecting a draft in furnaces by injecting a blast of air or air and steam thereinto, the method of producing an even draft and avoiding back draft through the furnace doors when opened, which consists of inject: ing or feeding a current of air into a receptacle within the fire-box, and then dividing such current into two parts, one of which passes to the furnace and the other is conducted to the smoke-stack, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a closed ash-pan, of an injector, H, and pipe I, leading to a stack or chimney, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a closed ash-pan, an injector, a cut-off, and a pipe leading from said pan to a stack or chimney, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of a stack or chimney, a furnace-box, a closed ash-pan, a pipe-connection between said stack and pan, an injector and steam-connection therefor, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of closed ash-pan E, pipes 0 and F, haying slots or perforations e and f, handle or operating mechanism f, in jector H, pipes 71 I, and stack or chimney D, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination of closed pan E, injector H, pipe I, valve or cut-off F, stack D, and regulator L, substantially as shown and described.
7. The combination of pan E, injector H, pipe I, stack D, and telescoping pipe K, substantially as shown and described.
8. A regulator for locomotive-engines, composed of semicircular plates Z I, pivoted or hinged at Z I, and toggles Z Z in combination with lever Z and bar M, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
