WZAWAZJ' gwipvya BY United States Patent ADJUSTABLE STRIKE PLATE Nicholas Gravino, South Ozone Park, N. Y.
Application August 22, 1955, Serial No. 529,822
1 Claim. (Cl. 292341.18)
This invention relates to strike plates for door lock mechanisms.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a strike plate for door locks which is adjustable vertically with a minimum of time and effort in the event that the door jamb should sag.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an adjustable door lock strike plate of the above type which may be adjusted laterally in a horizontal position to compensate for warpage or shrinkage with a minimum of time and efiort.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable door lock strike plate bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention shown in operative use;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view thereof and Fig. 3 is a top plan View shown alone of the inner element forming a part of the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, represents a door which is hingeably mounted within the jamb in the usual manner of such constructions, the jamb being indicated by the reference numeral 11.
In the practice of my invention, an adjustable door lock strike plate is provided and includes the outer T-shaped plate 12 which is secured within the usual recessed portion of the jamb by means of the mounting openings at opposite ends and the screws 13, as shown in Fig. 1.
The invention includes an inner plate 14 of rectangular shape which is provided with the usual central rectangular opening 15 which fits within and is in lateral alignment with the larger opening 16 of rectangular shape provided in the outer member 12. The opening 15 cooperates with the conventional door lock member in a manner which will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The inner plate 14 at the upper and lower ends thereof is provided with the stepped notches 17 which receive therethrough the screws 13 and which permit the vertical or lateral adjustment 'of the inner plate 14 and therewith the opening 15 thereof.
The invention may be used for either metal or wood door jambs as well as for doors having a locking device and a floor saddle and head jamb.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided an adjustable door lock strike plate which may be adjusted to any door with a minimum of cost in the event that the door or jamb should sag in the vertical position simply by loosening the screws 13 and moving the inner plate 14 up or down and then again tightening the screws 13. It should also be apparent that there has been provided an adjustable door lock strike plate which will permit the adjustment of door in or out against the door stop in a horizontal direction due to warpage or shrinkage (in the case of wood) or in the case of metal due to other factors by merely loosening the screws 13 and again moving the plate 14 in a lateral direction whereupon the screws 13 will again be tightened. The stepped notches 17will permit the adjustment against the jamb or door in order to cope with any misadjustment of the jamb or door that may arise.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
An adjustable door lock strike plate comprising an outer plate positioned within the door jarnb recess, means for securing said outer plate to the door jamb, said outer plate having a central rectangular opening therethrough, and an inner rectangular plate disposed intermediate said outer plate and the jamb, the said inner plate having a central rectangular opening positioned within said outer plate opening, and stepped notched means at opposite ends of said inner plate to permit the lateral or vertical adjustment of the same in the central opening thereof upon loosening said mounting means, said stepped notch means comprising a plurality of aligned alternately arranged steps and recesses on each side of the vertical lon gitudinal center plane of said inner plate at the upper and lower extremities thereof, each step portion at the upper and lower extremities at one side of said center plane being in facing arrangement with a recess on the opposite side of said center plane, and said means for securing said outer plate to the door jamb comprising screw means passing through mounting openings in said outer plate and through said inner plate, said screw means-being disposed adjacent to a step on one side of said inner plate center plane at the upper extremity thereof and disposed adjacent to a step on the same side of said inner plate center plane at the lower extremity thereof, whereby one extremity of said inner plate is prevented from being moved in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the opposite extremity thereof by abutment of said steps with said screw means.
