SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,725, dated June 5, 1883.

.To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PHILLIP MOORE, a resident of the city of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have in-v vented certain new and useful Improvements' in Gang and SulkyPlows, of which the following is a specification.

and to overcome the present defective means of lowering or raising the plows into or out of the ground, and provide therefor a simple, strong, and effective means of doing so; to arrange the mechanism for regulating the depth of the furrow so that the same can be performed without taking apart any portion ofthe machine; and my invention consists in constructing and arranging the plows upon suitable beams in front ofthe sulkywheels, close to the team, by which arrangement a direct draft is obtained, so that no tongue is actually required 5 by constructing the standard of main plow in the form of a curved rack, with teeth extending above and below the beam, and located sufficiently close thereto and in position to mesh in rack-teeth of a pivoted geared cam, to which is attached a handlever for operating with, by which the advantage is secured that the rack can run to the heel ofthe plow, which can thus be lifted or lowered within greatly-increased limits, and having underneath the muzzle or end of plow-beam an adj ustable caster-wheel, which performs the double function of steadying the beam and that of fulcrum when the plows are being lifted or lowered out of or into ground, by constructing the axle of sulky in two pieces, the main axle having a hollow elbow or standard, in which the furrowlwheel axle is fitted and adjusted vertically by means of set-screws whenever the depth of furrow is changed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is aview in perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the axles and the adjusting set-screws. Fig. 3 is a view in section of the device for lowering and raising the plows.
A represents the axle of the sulky. This axle is constructed and arranged in two pieces, the main piece A having an elbow.
A represents the elbow part thereof, which is hollow to receive the elbow-shaped axle B ofthe furrow-wheel. In the top of elbow A is fitted a set-screw, b, therebeing a thread cut for set-screw in elbow A', which is for the purpose of setting the plows to the desired' depth of work. b is another set-screw in the side of elbow A', and is for the purposeof holding the axle B steady and firm in place.
C C are the sulky-wheels, one on the land and the other in the furrow.
D D are the platform-braces, and are bolted to the back part of axle A and run back in a line with wheels C C. To these platformbraces are attached the wheel cleaners or scrapers c c.

95 I is the beam of main plow, having the vIO by a nutandbolt, g.' This slotted hole is for the purpose of allowing the cam K to be thrown out of gear with standard J by loosening the nut. It can be pushed back out of gear. The upper part of cam K terminates in a stub or handle, k, upon which is fitted lever j by bolt andnut j.

lM is the beam of outside or wing plow, being attached to beam I and a brace, m, and bolts and nuts m. .Y The front ends of both beams I and M, in conjunction with three muzzie-pieces, d d d, form the muzzle of the plow, to which is attached the clevis z' by pinvand key e. Beam M has a recess formed on inner side, where it fits against beam I, into which ts the pendent hinges N, and on the outside of beam I the other pendent hinge N ts, two bolts Yand nuts, a n, holding them together. These hinges N N are fastened above between the hounds F F by bolts and nuts h 7L, the arrangement of ends of beams I and M allowing oscillation, in conjunction with hinges N N and bolts a n, when the plows are raised or lowered.
Upon outside of hound F is attached an ear, O, in which the shaft vof a caster-wheel, P, is fitted. This caster-wheel is adjustable upon its shaft by. means of a set-screw.
Q is a brace running from axle A to muzzle of plow, being provided with a swivel or tightening joint, p.
R -is' the socket for the tongue, if one is used,` being on top of hound ends.
S is the notched rack, in which the lever is rested when raising or lowering the plows. This rack is fastened to the hound cross-bar f and platform by bolt and nut.
The following is the operation of my inven tion: Vhen it is desired to adjust the plows to work deeper or shallow, the set-screw b is loosened and the set-screw b is turned until the desired depth of furrow is attained. rIhen the set-screw b is tightened up again and the plow is ready to run. And when it is necessary to lift the plows out of the ground, either to avoid some obstruction in the land or to move to another eld, then the driver raises, by pulling upon the'lever, the standard J and plows by means of the cam K, and when the plows are raised high enough then the lever can be rest ed in a notch inrack S and-the plow driven anywhere. The tongue can be removed when desired by simply drawing a pin out of the socket. In plowing it is not necessary to use any tongue, as the construction and arrangement of my plows in front of the wheels, and the location of the plow-beams and hounds, make the.v draft direct; but in moving about from field to field the tongue may be necessary.
I am aware that jointed axles have been made consisting of a hollow sleeve forming part of one axle, and an elbow forming part of another axle iitting therein, in which the movement of the elbow in the sleeve is regulated by a lever and link,l as in the patent toG. A, Davison, No. 7 9,639, granted July 7, 1868, and reissued October 12, 1869, as No. 3,669; also, that jointed axles have been made in which a block Acarrying one axle-arm is adjusted up and down a slot in a downwardly projecting standard by an adjusting-screw, as in the patent to F. Girtanner, No. 236,574, granted J al1-' uary 1l, 1881.
I amfurther aware that plow-beams having toothed standards have been raised and lowered by a cam and lever, .but without the use of flanges or guides. Such a plow is described .in patent to .J and J. Ingham, No. 65,087, granted May 28, 1867.
