To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, TEDOR T. MILLER, a citizen of the United States', residing at Hice, in the county of Hamilton and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in sulky-plows; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a detailed view.
A represents a bent axle, which has the horizontal spindles (t for the supportingwheels, the vertical curved portion af, the upper horizontal portion, c2, and the inclined portion, a3. A drivers seat, B, is secured on one side of the horizontal portion a2, and also secured to said portion by means of a yokeclamp, b, is a draft-bar, C, which is adapted to be laterally adj usted on the horizontal portion of the bent axle. To the rear end of the draft-bar is secured, on its inner side, a bracket, C', in which is pivoted the upper vertical end of a bent rod, D, the lower end of which is bent out horizontally and forms a bearing for the trail-wheel E. The tongue F is bolted to the front end of the draft-bar on the outer side of said bar, and to the under side of said draft-bar, at its front end, is secured a bent angle-bracket, G, the horizontal portion g of which is slotted, and through this slot is passed the bolt C2, which secures the draft-bar to the bracket. By means of the slot the draft-bar is permitted lateral adjustment with reference to the bracket. Brace-rods H secure the bracket G to the bent axle.
To the vertical depending portion g of the bracket G is pivoted the front end of the plowbeam l, as at t'. A keeper, K, is secured to the inner side of the plow-beam, and embraces the vertical curved portion of the bent axle, and therebysecures the plow-beam to the vertical curved portion of the axle and permits it to be raised or lowered. A rack-bar, k, is secured on the keeper, and to the bent axle is secured a standard, L, as at Z, in the to the lower end of the standard, and the said standard is provided with a forwardly-extending arm, u', which is provided at its extremity with a series of openings, n2. Abolt, P, passes through one of these openings and through the beam, and thus secures the end of the arm thereto. By placing the securing-boltin either of the series of openings the plow can be adjusted with respect to the beam so as to be caused to enter the ground at any requisite angle. `A brace-rod, p, connects the standard L with the rear end of the draft-bar. From one side of the horizontal portion of the bent axle extends a vertical standard, R, to the upper end-of which, on one side, is journaled a chain-wheel, r, to which is secured a crank, r. An endless chain, S, connects the wheels o' and M. By turning the crank r the plow may be raised or lowered, as will be very readily understood- A pawl, S', having a handle, S2, is pivoted'to the standard B below the wheel r, and on one side of the draft-bar is secured a foot-rest, t. A clevis, V, is secured to the front end of the plow-beam, to which to secure the draft-animals.
Two or more horses may be hitched to this plow.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that neither of the supporting-wheels is required to run in the furrow, but all of them are on the unplowed ground, which thereby renders the draft of the plow very light, avoids chang and fretting the team, and is pleasant and easy to the driver. The draft is applied directly to the plow-beam, and, if preferred, the tongue may be dispensed with. The trailwheel supports the rear end of the draft-bar and keeps it level, and steadies the action of the plow when in operation. When the plow is raised from the ground and not at work, its
-weight is borne by the trail-wheel, and the plow can be readily transported from point to point.
A sulky-plow thus constructed is simple, light, and cheap, is thoroughly efficient, and very easily managed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the bent axle having the curved vertical portion a', the supportingwheels, the draft-bar C, secured to the axle, the trail-wheel at the rear end of the draft-bar, the bracket G, secured to the front end of the draft-bar, the plow-beam pivoted at its front end to the bracket G, and bearing against the portion a of the axle and sliding vertically thereomand means for raising and loweri ng the plow-beam and the plow attached to the plowbeam, said plow working in rear of one of the supportingwheels, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bent axle having the curved vertical portion a', the supportingwheels, the brace-rods H, secured to the axle, the slotted bracket G, secured to the bracerods, the draft-bar C, secured at its front end to the bracket by abolt, C2, that passes through the slot in the bracket, said draft-bar being secured to the axle and adapted tobeadj usted laterally thereon, the trail-wheel in rear of the draft-bar, the plow-beam pivoted lto bracket G and bearing against portion a of the axle, the plow attached to the beam and working in rear of one of the supporting-wheels, and means for raising andlowering the plow, sub stantially as described.
3. The combination of the bent axle having the vertical curved portion a', the draft-bar C, secured to the axle, the plow-beam pivoted at its front end to a bracket secured to the draftbar, rack k, secured to the plow-beam, pinion m, secured to the axle and engaging with the rack, sprocket-wheel M on the shaft with pinion m, sprocket-wheel r, j ournaled above wheel M and having a crank, and the endless sprocketchain connecting the wheels r and M, substantially as described.
