CALENDAR MEMORANDUM PADS AND HOLDER THEREFOR V Filed June 18, 1956 E1 711 MI W H" INVENTOR Min/9y (l. fk/fom/v CALENDAR MEMORANDUM PADS AND HOLDER THEREFOR Harry J. Friedman, Great Neck, N. Y. Application June 18, 1956, Serial No. 592,121
Claims. (Cl. 40-119) This invention pertains to calendar memorandum pads. More particularly, the invention relates to the type of calendar memorandum pad comprising a large number of bound calendar pages in which the past-dated pages can be retained in an out-of-the-way position, ready for future reference.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved calendar memorandum pad which is simple in construction, inexpensive to fabricate, and rugged and longlasting in use.
It is another object of the invention to provide a calendar memorandum pad of the character described in which, although the pages are rigidly bound to a support, as by staple, rivets, or glue, an inexpensive simply operable construction is provided to hold the past-dated pages in an accessible concealed location behind the support.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and in part will be pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of the various possible embodiments of the invention,
Fig. l is a front view of a calendar memorandum pad constructed in accordance with the instant invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the pad shown in Fig. 1;.
Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of said pad showing the same in use;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional-view taken substantially along the line 5--5 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral 1d denotes a calendar memorandum pad fabricated in accordance with the instant invention. Said pad includes a fiat backboard 12 made from any suitable inexpensive thin board-like material; for example, a stiff cardboard or pasteboard. Said backboard has an oblong shape, being vertically elongated and including rounded corners to provide a pleasing appearance.
Of course, any suitable shape may be employed depending on the uses to which the pad is to be put, i. e., desk or wall use, and type of memoranda for which it is designed.
. Near the top of the backboard an elongated horizontal slot 14 is formed, said slot being wide enough to accommodate all of the pages of a conventional calendar pad 16. Suitable means, e. g., staples 18, are employed to securely bind the pages of the pad and rigidly attach the pad to the backboard with the top edge of the pad parallel to and disposed just below the slot. The pad hangs from its linear zone of attachment and overlies the front of the backboard. The pages of the pad 16 2,787,071 Patented Apr. 2, 1957 are standard; for example, each page applies to one week and has the usual full monthly calendar 20 printed at the top and the rest of the page is approximately divided into printed sections for memoranda devoted to individual days of that week.
The backboard is provided with a metal grommet 22 at the top thereof to permit hanging of the calendar memorandum pad on a wall or the like. Also, an easel E is provided on the backboard so that the calendar memorandum pad may be stood on top of a desk, dresser, or the like. Said easel includes a rectangular panel 24 in one piece with the backboard but having its top and side edges separated from the backboard by slits 25. The bottom edge of the panel is defined by a weakened line 26, such as a cut extending only part way through to the backboard from the front surface thereof whereby to form a horizontal hinge joining the panel to the backboard. When the panel is swung back, it leaves an opening. The easel also includes a brace 30 in one piece with the backboard below panel 24 and, like the panel, defined by through slits 32 and a hinging cut 34. The panel 24 is formed with a T-shaped opening 36 in which a T-shaped locking tongue 38 carried by the brace is receivable.
Said opening 36 includes a wide section 40 large enough to accommodate the head of the tongue and large enough at its base to receive the shank of the tongue. The mouth of the narrow section is slightly smaller than the shank for a reason which will become apparent hereinafter. The brace and panel are located to cooperate with each other to form a stand with the panel extending downwardly and acting as a support for the backboard and with the brace holding the panel in position. To erect the easel, the tongue is inserted through the Wide section 40 of the opening 36 and the shank is forced past the mouth of the narrow section 42 of said opening so that the brace is captively held in the opening 36 with the shank located in the narrow portion thereof and the head of the tongue on the opposite side of the panel from the shank.
The easel does not take up any space during shipment of a calendar memorandum pad or when the easel is not being used because the panel and brace are located in the plane of the backboard. The easel need not be used at all if the calendar memorandum pad is hung by the grommet, and it can be disassembled, if desired, by simply forcing the shank past the mouth of the narrow section 42 and removing the head of the tongue from the wide section 40 of the opening 36.
Pursuant to the instant invention, means is provided on the backboard to retain the used pages of the pad 1-6 out of the way after use, but ready for future reference. said means serves also to reinforce an inherently weak portion of the backboard but does not add appreciably to the bulk thereof. The retaining means comprises a strip 44 of stiff board-like material such as cardboard or pasteboard and includes an upper section 46 to which a lower section 43 is hinged along the line 50 that constitutes a cut extending partially through the strip 44 from adjacent the rear surface of the backboard. The line Sil is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slot 14;
The upper section 46 includes a transverseslot 52 of slightly lar er dimensions than the slot 14 and is arranged on the backboard to completely clear said slot 14. The section 48 also includes a transverse slot 54 of substantially the same size as slot 14; however, the lower edge 56 of slot 52 is convex in the central region thereof so as to belly into the slot. The distance between the lower edge of the slot 54 and the upper edge 58 thereof at the narrowest (central) point is about equal to the thickness of the pad 16 so that the slot can receive all of the pad pages. The upper edge of slot 54 is coincident with hinge line 50.
The upper section of the strip is suitably secured to the rear of the backboard, 'as by glue, with slots 14 and 52 substantially registered. The latter slot is larger for the sake of appearance, i. e., so t-hat'the reinforcing means will not be visible from the front of the backboard. Said upper section reinforces the backboard but barely adds to the bulk thereof since it is disposed flat against the same. The lower section of the reinforcing means is flat against the rear surface of the backboard when the calendar memorandum pad is not in use so that it too does not noticeably increase the bulk of the device.
The calendar memorandum pad operates as follows:
As each page from the pad becomes outdated and it becomes desirable to locate it in an out-of-the-way but accessible position, it is inserted through registered slots 14 and 52 and then passed through slot 54.
Because of the rigid binding 13 of the pad to the back board and the proximity of the slot 14 to said binding, the out-of-date pages slipped through the slot are bowed, i. e., curled, and tend to pull back. For the same reason the portions of the pages at the back of the slot tend to raise if pulled down close to the rear surface of the backboard. The slotted, hinged section 48 takes advantage of these characteristics of the past-dated pages to hold them behind the backboard. The upward movement of the pages toward horizontal position lifts the hinged section 48 and the bowing of said pages tends to pull the pages back through the slot 52. However, the rightangled corner a of the bottom edge 56 of said slot engages the outermost page and rides on the same like a friction brake preventing retrograde movement. Indeed, the harder the pages pull and raise, the greater the frictional restraining force that is developed. This force is enhanced by the convex curvature of the edge 56 which curves the group of outdated paper and thus increases the pressure between said sheets and edge.
It thus will be seen that there is provided a device which achieves the several objects of the invention and is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
'As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein described, or shown in the accompanying drawings, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having now described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
