Description

(No Model.)
J. FALLOWS.
TOY.
No. 278.694. v Patented June 5,1883.
WITNESSES:
- BY 1, I I i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FALLOWS, OFVPHHJADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 278,694, dated June 5, I883.
Application filed April 13, 1883. (No model.)
' fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly sectional, of a toy embodying my invention. a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof.
Similar letters. of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to improvements in toys generally known as tin toys, and it consists of a figure or object mounted on wheels, which are provided with means for operating the hammer of a gong or bell secured to a proper part of the toy, thus producing a simple, inexpensive, and amusing toy, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a figure or object, which may be that of an ani mal, a horse and wagon, engine, 8m; and B represents a floor, which apparently supports the animal, or is that of the body of the wagon, engine, 850., and has secured to its under side a gong or bell, G.
D represents the wheels of the toy, the same being properly mounted on the floor thereof, and to one of their axles is secured a projecting finger or wiper, E, which thus rotates with the axle.
F represents a depending spring, which is rigidly connected with the floor and provided with a head or hammer, G, the location whereof is in front, or adjacent to the wiper E. The spring is continued below the place of attachment of the head G, or has a piece secured thereat to form a lip, H, which is adjacent to the wiper E, and adapted to be engaged thereby.
It will be seen that when the toy is propelled the wiper presses against the lip, and when it clears the same the spring forcibly returns and causes its head to strike the gong, thus rendering the toy more interesting and amusing, it being noticed that I avoid pivoted levers and other means of accomplishing the same.
In order to obtain greater throw of the spring, the lip H is bent rearward, so that the wiper necessarily forces away the spring to an Fig. 2 is the floor, through which the spring is passed,
the same being sufficiently large to allow the spring to play and vibrate therein.
The gong or bell and wiper are duplicated, and may be multiplied for one or both axles, the wipers being arranged at different angles and the gongs or bells being of different pitch, whereby the latter are sounded in unison, the effects being varied according to the disposition of the gongs and wipers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy consisting of a figure or object on wheels, a bell, and a depending spring-arm connected with the floor or support of the toy, and: a wiper on one of the axles, the springarm being rigidly attached at its upper end to said floor or support and'carrying the bellhammer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A wheeled toy having a bell and a depending spring-arm, which carries the hammer thereof, the portion of said spring below the hammer having a lip with which engages a wiper on one of the wheels, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A wheeled toy having a floor or support and a raised piece thereon, a bell, spring-arm, bell-hammer, and wiper, said arm being connected with and depending from said piece and passing through an opening in said floor or support, whereby the lower end of the arm and the bell-hammer are adjacent to the wiper and gong, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a wheeled toy, depending spring-arms rigidly held at one end and carrying bell-hammers at the other end, and gongs of different pitch, in combination with wipers on the axle of the wheels, disposed whereby the gongs sound in unison, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
