p ADJUSTABLE sTovE-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,617, dated May 29, 1883.4
Application filed March 5, 1883. (No model.) I
1b alt 'whom 'it may concern: i
Be it known that I, DELos A. SMITH, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Locke,
lin the county of Ingham and State of Michil construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in
' .Which- Y Figure l represents a side `view of two sections ot stove-pipe, showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is "a, detail sectional vew.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and A' designate two cylindrical sections of a stove pipe, the section A' telescoped or sliding within the section A, and having near one end a row o'f perforations, ct The section A is inserted within the outer section,A,for the purpose of securingit to the outer section,` as will befurther hereinafter explained. The outer section, A, has also holes or perforations a' a', near its end, which, when the two sections are connected, will come in alignment with the holes in the inner section, through which pass pins B B', that are secured to the ends ot' a tlat double spring, C. This double spring G'is re-enforced at its center by a piece ofV metal, c, to giveit rmness and rigidity at that point, so that the ends of said spring, :where thepins `B B are secured, may have sufficient elasticity to automatically connect the two sections of pipe asthesame are slid one within the other.
Any number of holes' may be used that is necessary in putting up stove-pipes ot' various 5C. lengths.
The spring C above described, with its reenforcing piece c is rigidly secured to the outer section near the connecting end by a rivet, which also passes through the metal piece c, as 55 shown in the drawings.
It will be observed by reference to the drawings that the ends ofthe pins B B' are beveled in opposite directions to one another, which permits either end to operate automatically '6b when the pipes are adjusted.
In taking the sections apart it can he easily accomplished by withdrawing the upper pin only, when the inner pipe can be readily de tachcd fromthe outer pipe, and in connecting 65 the pipes the lower pin is withdrawn, thus perl mitting the inner pipe to slide therein. In either movement it will be seen that the 4pins act automatically in locking the pipes.
From the foregoing description it will be 70 obvious thatthe operation of my invention is such that it requiresbut little time in connecting the pipes, and at the same time it is cheap to manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I 75 claim, and desire/ to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, with the pipe-sections A A', having perforations a a', of the double spring C, having re-enforced piece c, and pro- 8o vided with bevel-pins B BNngaging the perforations a, whereby the sections of the pipe are automatically locked together, assllown. and described.
2. 1n combination with the pipes A A', havin g \5\\ perforations a a a a", thedouble spring C, provided with the re-enforcing piece c, secured at its center to the outer pipe, A, both ends adapted to engage by their pins B B the perforations, whereby the sections are locked to- 9o gether, as shown and described. 4 y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DELOS A. SMITH. Witnesses:
GEO. H. GALUSHA, LoUIs GEYER.
