GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 278,568, dated May 29, 1883.
Application filed March24, 1383. (No model.) i i To alt whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ANDREW B. LIPSEY,0f
West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain of which the following is a specification.
The object of thisimprovement isto pro duce a gas-burner in which the gas will be very thoroughly heated before arriving at the point 10 of combustion.
The improvement consists in the'combina' tion, with an annular burner-tip or a series of burner-tips,ofa gas-passage extending up within the same to a point considerably beyond the same and. returning thereto, so asjto be heated by the products of combustion passing through a chimney applied to the burner. i The improvement also consists in a novel manner of constructing and supportinga chimney for a burner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a burner and appurtenances embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the burner, and Fig. 3 is a plan or top view ot'a certain part ofthe burner.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The burner is provided with, a socket, A, which is shown as internally screw-threaded, so that it may be attached to the nipple of a gas-fixture. This socket is shown as made integral with a bod y-piece, B, from which extend laterally a number of hollow arms or pipes, O, communicating with an annular burner-tip, D. The inner wall of this burner-tip is shown as made integral with the hollow arms or pipes G, and the outer wall and tip as made separately and screwed'in place. In the top of the burner are small apertures, fromwhich the gas may issue. p y
E designates a pipe extendingfrom the body-piece B upward within the annular burn- .er-tip to a point a long distance above the same. It communicates with the socket A,
and, as here shown, is united at the upper end by a coupling-piece, E, with another pipe, E of the same size, extending in line therewith. The pipe E is closed at the upper end by a I cap, a, or otherwise. Near its upper end a number of pipes, F, extendlaterally from it, and from these pipes F pipes G extend downwardly sections.

outer portion of the coupling-piece E.
to the coupling-piece E. These pipes F G are gallery, H, which may consist of a disk of sheet metal fastened to the under side of the body-piece by screws 0 or otherwise. j
I J designate a chimney composed of two The lower section, I, maybe made; of glass, and is supported upon the galleryH'; but the upper section, J, will preferably 178* made of metal, and extends past the lower section, inside or outside ofit. As here shown; the upper section, J,'is' provided with an illf wardlyextending flange, d, which is hung oh the pipes F, so as to support said section. It
--will be seen that by this construction 1pm:
duc'efa gas-passage extending upwardly throughand beyond the burner-tip within the chimney, and thence laterally, and subsequently downwardly and inwardly to the I do not wish to limit myself to;
s'tructed I and put together to form this gaspassage, as they may be varied considerably in details, and the passage yet made to extend in the same directions. For instance, I may arrange inside the upper" section, J, of the chimney a tube, of metal, conforming to said section in shape, but made sufficiently smaller to leave an annular space between it and said section, and I may close this space at the top and bottom and make 'the pipes F eommu'ni' 9o cate with the upper portion and other pipes communicate with the lower portion and the In either construction the gas will be thoroughly heated before arriving at the burner-tip.
K designates a deflector, which will preferably be made of glass, and has its upper edge extended along the burner-tip and bent in toward the latter. This deflector rests upon the gallery H, and is of such size that aspace is left between it andthe burner-tip andanother space is left between it and the lower section ot the chimney. The gallery is provided with openings 6 (see particularly Fig. 2) where the deflector rests upon it hence provision is atforded for the entrance of air both outside and inside the deflector. Outside the pipe P, I preferably arrange some white material, L such, for instance, as asbestus, or any material which will become incandescent when heated.
M designates a shade, which maybe made of glass, metal, or any other suitable material, and of any appropriate shape. It is shown as having the upper edge turned inward and downward and resting upon a holder secure by Letters Patent, is
1; The combinatiomwith an annular burnertip or series of burner-tips, ofa gas-passage extending up within the same to a point considerablybeyond the same and returning thereto,
-s0, as to be heated by the products of combustion passing through a chimney, substantially as specified.
2. "The combinatiomwith an a-nndlar bu rnert'ip or a'series of burner-tips, of a gas-passage, consisting of a pipe extending upi'rom the center of a body-piece from which the burner tip or tips extend, and adapted to communicate with the nippleof a gas-fixture, a pipe or pipes extending laterally from the said pipe at a pointconsid'erably above the burner tiportips, and pipeswh'ich are in communication with the said laterally-extendingpipeor pipes and coinmunicate with the burner tip or tips, substantially as specified.
3. Thecombination,with aburnertip-ortips,
ofa body-piece from which the same'extend, a
pipe, E, adapted to communicate with the nip ple of a gas-fixture, a coupling-piece, E, a pipe,
E annmber of pipes, F, a number of pipes, G,
or a passage communicating with thecouplingpiece, the pipe P, and the huh I) of the bodypiece, provided with a cavity communicating with the burner tip or tips, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with a burner tip or tips, of a body-piece from which the same extend,
pipes forming a passage up within or between the burner tip or tips, thence back again so as to communicate with the burner tip or tips, and comprising a pipe, P, and a white material, L-such as asbestus'oran'y material which will become incandescent when heatedap-- plied to the exterior of the pipe P, substantially as specified. i
5. The combination, with an annular burner.
tip or a series, of burner-tips, of a body-piece from which the same extends, a passage con.
sisting of pipes extending up from the bodypiece and back again to it, so as to then-sup. ply gas to the burner tip or tips, and achim-F ney composed of a lower section and an upper section, which is hung upon the said pipes,
substantially as specified.
6. The combinatiomwith a burner tip or tips, of a body-piece from whichthe same extend, a
to supply gas to the burner tip or tips, a chimney-gall'ery extending from the body-piece, a
chimney consisting of an upper section sup ported by the said pipes and a. lower section. supported by the chimney-gallery, a deflector supported on thechimney-gallery, and open..
ings in the-chimney-galleryadmitting air within and outside of the deflector, substantially.
as specified.
