Claims priority, application France December 6, 1951 3 Claims. (Cl. 19113) The present invention relates to card flat coverings, especially for carding cotton.
The hitherto known types of flexible or rigid card flat covering had full settings, i. e. extending practically over the whole width of the body of the flat, with the exception of selvages for placing clamps or clips.
As well known, in flexible clothings, irrespective of the pattern or method of setting (full set, one rib set, crossed, double chain, double twill, or the like) according to which the needles or points are distributed, said needles or points are disposed on the card wire bands which are cut into sheets adapted to be mounted and clamped to the body of the flat in such a manner that the points are distributed regularly, uniformly and continuously over the whole surface of the bands, both in the longitudinal and in the transverse direction, leaving between the needles, according to the density of distribution, free spaces which, amongst other disadvantages, facilitate choking-up and accumulation of waste.
The purpose of the present invention is to eliminate these disadvantages. To this end, the present invention relates to a flexible or rigid card top characterized essentially in that it contains zones provided with needles, points or wires, and zones free of needles, points or wires, which alternate according to any suitable arrangement, these two types of zones together covering the whole surface of the flat, the area covered by the one type either corresponding to that covered by the other type of zone or differing from it, and the pattern or method of setting and the density of distribution on one or more zones provided with points being different from or the same as those on other zones provided with points.
The present invention also relates to a new industrial product consisting of a card wire band employed in the clothing of card tops by means of flexible sheets cut from card wire bands, this new card wire band being essentially characterized in that it comprises, in combination with the card cloth, zones provided with needles, points or teeth and zones free of needles, points or teeth which alternate according to any suitable arrangement and cover the whole breadth and alternatively cover the whole length of the band; the areas covered by these two types of zones may be equal or different, and their shapes may be similar or dissimilar.
To enable the invention to be more fully understood two embodiments of the invention, chosen purely by way of example and not of limitation, employing the type of card wire band to which the invention relates and which comprises zones provided with needles, and zones free from needles, in alternation, are hereinafter described and illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view (from the needle side) of a section of a band cut so as to form a card flat clothing sheet, alternate zones provided with needles and zones free of needles being dis-posed parallel to each other in the longitudinal direction of the band.

Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a card top, on which is employed a needle clothing sheet, as illustrated in Figure 1, obtained by cutting from a card wire band for Hats and having zones provided with needles, and zones free from needles, in alternation with and parallel to one another.
In Figures 1 and 2 (views from the needle side), 1 is the card cloth or base of a 'car'd vibvire b'and for fla'ts, 2 are the zones provided with needles, and 3 the zones free of needles.
In Figure 1, the zones 2 and 3 are disposed in the longitudinal direction of the strand which is cut into the shape of a sheet 1; each sheet has preferably three zones, the zone 3 free of needles being disposed between two zones 2 provided with needles, thus forming a kind of central alley or gap.
In Figure 2 the zones 2 and 3 of the sheet 1 are inclined transversely, the zones 2 provided with needles being separated from each other by alleys 3 free of needles.
Figure 3 shows the sheet 1 which is provided with the two types of zones 2 and 3, mounted on a metal body 4 consisting of T-shaped iron, and fastened in the usual way by shrunk-on clamping bands or clips 5; 6 is a part of a. large cylinder provided with clothing 7.
Owing to the arrangement of alternating zones 2 provided with needles and zones 3 free of needles, the card flat clothing according to the present invention not only avoids the disadvantages of the hitherto known types of card flat clothing but also, without requiring any changes or modifications in the cards or bodies, doubles the number of carding zones, allows a considerably greater tolerance in adjustment, completely removes the risks of friction in the clothing, requires nine to ten times less frequent sharpening and thus lengthens the life of the clothing, treats the fibres less harshly as it operates in two or several regions instead of ope-rating as hitherto on a single line, produces a faultless web by eliminating nops, which are not reduced to dust as heretofore, and diminishes the proportion of long fibres in the fiat waste.
What I claim is:
1. A card flat for carding machines for cotton comprising, in combination, a mounting having a supporting surface and a flexible card clothing formed from a single unitary sheet covering the entire supporting surface of said mounting, the working surface of said unitary sheet having two laterally spaced-apart, longitudinally-extending parallel zones of uniform carding needles projecting from its outer surface, said zones being separated by a single longitudinal intermediate zone free from needles, said intermediate zone being disposed in the longitudinal central plane of the sheet and the extremities of the needles of each of said parallel zones lying in a common plane parallel to said surface and the extremity of each needle being an equal distance from the extremities of adjacent needles, the longitudinal median line of said card clothing being substantially at the center of the zone free from needles, whereby to provide each card flat with two carding zones.
2. A card flat for carding machines for cotton comprising, in combination, a mounting having a supporting surface and a flexible card clothing formed from a single unitary sheet covering the entire supporting surface of said mounting, the working surface of said unitary sheet having two laterally spaced-apart, longitudinally extending parallel zones of uniform carding needles projecting from its outer surface, said zones being of equal width and being separated by a single longitudinal intermediate zone free from needles, said intermediate zone being disposed in the longitudinal central plane of the sheet and the extremities of the needles of each of said parallel zones lying in a common plane parallel. to said surface and the extremity of each needle being an equal distance from the extremities of adjacent needles, the longitudinal median line of said card clothing being substantially at the center of the zone free from needles, whereby to provide each card flat with two carding zones.
3. A card wire band for providing a flexible covering for a card flat for carding machines for cotton comprising, in combination, a continuous strip formed from a single unitary sheet, the working surface of said sheet having a plurality of laterally spaced-apart, longitudinally extending parallel zones of uniform carding needles projecting from its outer surface, each pair of said zones being separated by a single longitudinal intermediate zone free from needles, said intermediate zone being disposed in the longitudinal central plane of the sheet portion containing each pair of said parallel zones of needles with the extremities of the needles of each parallel zone lying in a common plane parallel to said sheet and the extremity of each needle being an equal distance from the extremities of adjacent needles.
