Description

t j LIf-FED.r ATE-S) PATENT 'Olitffi- "Levi srooKDALE, .orzANEsvLLa omo. l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `Patent No. 278,466, @met` May 29, ieee.-
Application tiled February 12, 1883.' '(No model.)
To all -wlmm 'it mag/concern:
Beit known that I, LEVI STOGKDALE, a citizen of `he United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county ot' Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Heater,`of whichs the `following is a specitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. .I n y Thisinveution relates toheaters, aud is especially adapted for use in sleighs, carriages, Aand other vehicles, to warm the feet ot' the oecupants and to otherwise distribute beat in jthe conveyance. l
` The invention has for its object totprovide a' simple, inexpensive, and etlicieut heater that will effect economy in fuel, can be conveniently operatedand obviates all liability of setting'tire to the vehicle. t
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved heater. Fig. 2 is a ver- I tical sectional view, illustrating its application to a sleigh. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical 'sectional view of the heater. Fig. 4 is a horirzoutal sectional view on the line au v, Fig. 3., Fig. 5'is a plan view of the. outside box. Iiig.v j6 is a perspective view of the inside box or firechambe'r. f
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the outside box, that is preferably cast in onel pieceof malleable iron, and forms a hotair compartment,l as hereinafter specified. This f outside box consistsof the vertical sides or walls B, C, D, and E, respectively, a hinged bottom, F, that forms the bottom of the ashpit, and by operating which on its hinges the ashes can he conveniently dropped or deposited when desired, and aV hinged top, G. The top G is formed with perforations H, through which the hotair escapes to warm 4the feet, which are rested ou the said top plate.
I isa horizontal ange or supporting-shoulder that projects interiorly around the outside box, A,`near its bottom, and on this ange rests the removable inside nre-chamber when/- the latter. is in position.v Above the flange I areV arranged projections J, that retain/the inside boxer iire-chamber in position to pre-A serve the hot-air space K betweenV the inside and outside boxes. This hot-,air space K, ex- 5o tends around the heater, as shown, and opens i. intothe yhot-air chamber L, between Athe top theI inside box and the top plate, G.
M are small perforations that are provided space. In the face B otl the box 4A are pro-` vided openings `N N, at the ash-pit and below. the dange I, which are arranged to be closed` by aslide, O, to regulate the draft. These openings N are to be covered by a metallic neti 6o work,P, to prevent escape ot' the ashesthrou'ghg them. The back wall, G, of the box A. is out` i away `to form a recess, Q, and a similar recess, R, is formed inthe side wall, D. The box A S at'its corners, by which it' can he secured to` the floor. n
T is the inside box, which, like box A,ispref erably cast in one piece of malleable iron, and it formsthe tire chamber. This box T-com- 7o prises the vertical side Walls,U,\V, W, andX,y respectively, and the top Y, and has its bottom Z formed by the grate. The end or side walls ofthe box T., W, and X are provided with interior shoulders, A2 A2, that are formed with 7 5 recesses B2 in their top edges, and ihtothese recesses are set the grate bars G2 and an inclined plate,D2,inrear ot' the bars, the purpose of Awhich plate is to keep the fuel ou the latter and ci'ect more directaction of the draft 'on the Sd lire. The bars and back plate are not secured in their seats, and they are, therefore, readily removable for-substitution or other purposes. The side wall W is provided with a flanged openinggEz, having a doo,r., F2.V This flanged 85 portion rests in the recess R, and through the. opening fuel may be fed to the lire wit-hout removing the box Tfrom the outside box, A. The rear wall, V, of the box T is likewise provided Y with a anged opening, F3, and this angedfgo portion rests in. the recess Q.
Y The top plate,G, is provided with iianges Gr2 and H2 on its under surface, which project against the flanges E2 and F3, and also with Tand secure the'same down. By opening the top G the inside box can be readily` removed 4from' or placed in thebox A. 4The productsiof V,combustion .in the chamber T pass oit' through in the vertical walls of the box A, abovethe i flange I, to supply pure` air to the hot-air 5 5 is also provided with extensions or projections 65 flanges l2 12, that project against the top ot' box 9 5 y the rearopehing, F2, and cannot escape into roo the hotair space, and the heat radiated from the said chamber T heats the air in the hot-air space. i
From' the flange Faa pipe, J 2, can be arranged to extend to a drum, K2, and the latteris to be provided with a pipe, L2, through which the smoke and other products ot' combustion can escape. This conductingpipe J2 is to be inclosed in a largeroutside pipe, M2, so that a hot-air space, N2, is provided betweenthe two pipes, and this outer pipe, M2, opens int'o a drum, O2, that ineloses the drum K2 The hot air which thus passes into thedrum O2 makes its exit through openings P2 in the top thereof to heat thevehiole,
arranged under the seat.
1. The combination, with the outside box having a hinged perforated top, and provided with an interior shoulder or flange near its bottom, above which are arranged the projections, said box having perfor-ations in its walls above the flange, and 'also openings below the flange, of the inside removable chamber having closed sides and top, an open grate bottom, and an exit-due extending to the outside ofthe heater, as set fort-h. l
these .drumsbeing usually 2.The combination, withy the outside box having` a hinged bottom, a hinged perforated top,an interior flange or shoulder nearits bottom, projections above the ange, openings below the iange, perforations in its walls above the ilange, and the recesses in its Walls, ofthe inside frevchamber having closed sides and top, an open grate bottom, a flanged feed-opening, and a flanged exit-opening, as set forth.
3. The combinaton, with the outside box,vA, having the hinged bottomF, perforated hinged top G, provided with flanges on its under surface, the interior horizontal supporting-flange, I, the projectionsJ above the flange, arranged to form-hotair space K, and the draft-openings M 4and N, of the inside removable box, T, arranged'to rest on flange I and form the top 'hot -air chamber, L, andprovided with 'thel gratebottom, tlie sidetlanged opening, E2,and thetlanged opening F2, as set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my ownI haw hereto affixed my signature in presence of. two witnesses.
