UNITED STATES PATENT .Oriuce.
SPARKMAN R. SCREVEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY BIRD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,461, dated May 29, 1883.
' Applicationfiled April25,1883. (NomodeL) .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SPARKMAN R. SoaEvEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityand county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Birds, which improvement is fully setforth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective viewot' a toy bird embodying my invention, the object being to form a toy bird which in a measure imitates gthe natural motions of a bird on the wing.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a figure of the form of abird, constructed of wood or othersuitable material, and having its wings 'B B pivoted or hinged in position.
O'represents an arm or strip of spring metal, which, sustaining the bird, is firmly secured to the tail thereof. The strip may be held by the hand, and is manipulated in such' manner that itis caused to vibrate, rising and falling, carrying with it the bird, in which operation the wings B alternately open and close, simulating the motions incident to flying. As the bird is connected by its tail withthe springstrip, its sweep is increased, and thus but little effort of the hand is required to cause the desired effect. By shaking or agitating the strip, the motions of the bird may be varied and stiff uniformity of the vibrations prevented, whereby amore natural appearance of fly ing ispresented. D represents a plate, to which the lower end of the strip 0 may be secured, either as a bandle or means of connection with a wall, door, childs carriage, theatrical scenery, &c. The plate extends above the place, a, of securing or fastening the strip thereto, so that while the top of the plate in no wise interferes with the sweep of the strip and bird the extreme upper 'edge acts as a deflector for causing the re''- turn of the strip should it fly backward or over said edge. in this case, when the strip strikes said edge, the portion of the same adapted to with movable wings and a spring-arm secured thereto, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The figure and spring-arm, in combina tion with a plate connected with thearm, sub. stantially as and for the purposeset forth.
3. The plate connected with the spring-arm of the figure and extended above the place of connection, rsnbstantially as and for the pur pose .set' forth.
