Description

UNITED STATES,
PATENT OEEIcE.
EDWARD L. sLooUM, E LANCASTER, OHIO.
naueels'rs PERCOLATOR.
SPEGIFICATIO N fOrming part ofLetters Patent No. 278,284, dated May 22, 1883.
Application filed March 19, 183. (No model.)
citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Percolators and I do hereby" declare that the following is a full, clear, and
. exact description thereof, reference being bad 1 to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dru gists percolators or filters in which. re-
movable diaphragms are employed to express extracts from solid or semi-solid substances with the aid of menstrua, and the purpose of my invention is to attain this end with the naximum simplicity of construction; and it consists of the particular features herein set' -jmzp tlqllh, and pointed out in the claim. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the I accompanying drawing, in which- The figure represents an elevation, partly in section, of my device.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the view.
A represents a vessel filled with alcohol or other menstruum, which is fed in quantities regulated by cock B through pipes O and D into the cylinder L, made of any suitable material.
E represents a rem ovablecap, .whose interior 3 threads engage withexterior threads on a nipple projecting from the top of the cylinder L.
F and G are diaphragms which confine the substance whose extract is desired. They are fboth'vertically movable on the threadedrod H,
it and are impelled by said rod. The diaphragm F encircles the rod loosely, being kept in place by-the substance; but the diaphragm G rests on a threaded boss, I, which is vertically adjustable on the rod by means of the threads thereon. When it is desired to subject the substance to great pressure, before commenc- It will be understood that by the use of my device the pressure can be increased at any time without exposing the hand to the liquid, and without in anyrnanner affecting the operation.
Although my device is specially adapted for useby druggists and chemists in obtaining medical or chemical filtrates and percolates, it is obvious that its use is not so limited. On the contrary, it would be useful in lixiviatin'g ashes to make potash, in which case the vessel A would be filled withwater; orin extracting dyes from d ye-stufis; or in filtering water through charcoal or silicate; or, in fact, toany use to which a filter may he put.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A cylinder, L, having a headed rod, H, partially screw-threaded and concentric therewith, two movable diaphragms, F G, the latter resting on a boss, 1, adjustable on the rod, and the former on the substance confined between them, and a threaded cap, E, on the cover, in combination with a vessel, A, pipe 0, nipple D, the former having a cock, B, tunnel K, and vessel M, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
EDWARD L. SLOOUM.
