(Cl. 70-136) This invention relates to locks of the character usually employed on doors or for other purposes, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which shall be made as burglar-proof as possible; which shall be provided with a novel form of bolt, making picking of the lock extremely difficult, if not impossible.
It-is an object of the invention to provide a door lock of the character described which shall have an arcuatelyshaped or curved bolt extending out of and re-entering into the lock casing when the bolt is in its fully advanced or locked condition. It is an object of the invention to provide a lock having a curved or arcuate bolt so arranged that it cannot be pried to open position by the usual prying eiforts employed by thieves. It is a further object of the invention to provide a lock which shall be opened by a curved key of novel construction and which will prevent the entry of keys having straight shanks into the lock.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a lock which shall be composed of relatively few parts; which can be easily assembled and produced with aminimum of manufacturing cost. 1
With these, and other objects to be hereinafter set forth in view, I have devised the arrangement of parts to be described and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a lock, constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lock, with one side of the housing removed to disclose the lock mechanism, and with the bolt in a fully-retracted position;
Fig. 3 is a view of the lock, looking at the same from the left of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the bolt being retracted by means of the hand-latch;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the lock in its closed or locked position;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view through one of the key-controlled mechanisms of the lock, and
Fig. 7 is a face view of the striker plate.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates one of the halves of the housing within which the lock mechanism is contained, and 2 indicates the other half thereof. The two halves of the housing are placed together and secured in cooperating relation by means of the screws 3 or equivalent fastening means. At one end of the housing is attached the plate 22 which is secured to the flanges 25 on the housing halves by means of the rivets 26.
Fixed within the housing is a non-rotative disk 10 held in position by the screws 11 (Fig. 1) and the periphery of the disk 10 is formed with a notch 13 and also shaped in a manner to result in the formation of a shoulder indicated at 40. Rotative around the disk 10 is the boltcarrying member 8 which is formed with an arcuatelyshaped bolt terminating in a rounded nose or end 21.
In its locked or extended position, as shown in Fig. 5, the bolt 20 is projected through the two openings indicated respectively at 23 and 24 in the plate 22 and said bolt will also extend through similar openings indicated at 2311' and 24a'formed in the striker plate 43 shown in Fig. 7 and secured to the edge of the door frame by screws or other fastening elements extended through the screw-holes 44 formed in said plate 43-. The bolt-carrying member 8 is formed with a hub having a toothed se tion in the form of a mutilated gear 9, the teeth of which are adapted at certain times to be engaged by one or more of the teeth of mutilated gears 7 secured on the 7 square shaft 6 of the pin-locks 4 or 5 disclosed in Fig. 6.
Embracing the disk 10 and slidable relatively thereto, is a U-shaped locking element or yoke 12 provided with spaced legs 15 and 16 and also provided with a tooth 14 located between the legs and adapted at times for engagement either against the shoulder 40 or in engagement with the notch 13 as will be explained. The legs 15 and 16 of the yoke 12 have laterally bent ends which respectively enter between the teeth 9 on the bolt-carrying member whereby the yoke 12 will be caused to rotate around the fixed disk 10 in company with the boltcarrying member 8, but will be slidable relatively to the bolt-carrying member. in a recess 46 formed in a face of the bolt-carrying member 8, and said spring has a leg 18 resiliently operative against the yoke 12 to thereby urge the yoke toward the fixed disk 10 and maintain the tooth 14 against the periphery of the disk. The second leg 19 of the spring bears against a wall of the recess 46.
Each of the pin locks 4 and 5 is carried by a half of the housing. These locks are of generally-known construction but diifer therefrom primarily by the fact that they each employ a key 41 having a curved shank 42 for engagement with the pins in the lock to permit of rotation of the square shaft 6. This curved shank 42 on the key prevents the entry into the lock of keys with straight shanks and also can be used to indicate that this particular key is intended for a lock in which a curved or arcuate bolt is employed. Each of the locks 4 and 5 has its own projecting square shaft 6 and on each of these square shafts is attached one of the mutilated gears 7. Thus, either of the gears 7, operated from either of the pin locks 4 or 5, will operate the locking mechanism in the manner to be now described.
In Fig. 2, the lock is shown in its open or fully retracted position. By turning the mutilated gear 7 clockwise, as viewed in this figure of the drawings, the boltcarrying member 8 will be rotated counter-clockwisely to cause the curved or arcuate bolt 20 to start to move out through the opening 24 in the plate 22. This move ment of the bolt will continue until the bolt reaches the partly-extended position shown in Fig. 1, at which time the tooth 14 on the yoke 12 will contact with the shoulder 40 and rotation of the bolt will be halted until one of the teeth on the mutilated gear 7 will enter between the teeth 9 and engage against the end of the leg 15 of the yoke 12 thus forcing the yoke 12 away from the disk 10 and disengaging the tooth 14 from the shoulder 40. The bolt-carrying member '8 is now free to continue its counter-clockwise movement as the gear 7 continues to move it, until the bolt 20 is fully advanced out of the housing and to the extended or locked position shown in Fig. 5. It will therein be seen that the bolt extends through both the openings 23 and 24 and will also correspondingly extend through the similar openings 23a and 24a in the striker plate 43 secured to the door frame. When the bolt reaches this fully-advanced or locked position, the tooth 14 engages with the notch 13 and hence the bolt cannot be advanced further or retracted until the tooth 14 is disengaged from said notch.

As the counter-clockwise movement of the gear 7 continues, it will rotate the bolt-carrying member 8 in a clockwise direction and thus retract the bolt to the open position shown in either Figs. 2 or 4.
The lock also includes a manually-operated latch by means of which the bolt may be retracted from its position of Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 4. The latch is shown at 29 and the same consists of a slidable bar normally urged to the retracted or elevated position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 by means of a torsional spring fitted around a tubular post 36 on the part 2 of the housing. The spring has one leg 34 engaged against a wall of the housing part 2 and has its other leg 37 engaged against the latch member 29 to normally raise or elevate the same to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 5. The latch member 29 is guided in its sliding movement by the guide elements 32 on the housing part 2 and it is provided with a lateral extension 30 which overlies an arcuate slot 31 shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5 of the drawing, or else a diagonal slot as shown at 33 in Fig. 1. The extension 30 may be provided with a finger piece extending through either of these slots. When the latch or slide 29 is manually moved downwardly against the upward urge of the spring leg 37, its lower end will contact with one of the teeth 9 as shown in Fig. 4 and will act to retract the bolt from the partly advanced position ls:hown in Fig. l to the fully retracted position shown in Having described one embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
1. A lock having a housing, a disk fixedly mounted therein, the disk having a notched edge, a yoke straddling the disk, said yoke having a tooth for engagement with the notched portion of the disk, an arcuate bolt member having a toothed edge, the yoke having parts disposed between the teeth on said bolt member said bolt member being mounted for rotation around the disk, spring means carried by the bolt member and operative against the yoke to thereby urge its tooth toward the notched edge of the disk, and a pin lock carrying a mutilated gear for engagement with the toothed edge of the bolt member, said mutilated gear being at times operative against those parts of the yoke as are situated between the teeth of the bolt member to thereby urge the yoke in a direction away from the notched edge of the disk.
2. A lock having a housing; a disk fixedly mounted therein, the disk having a notch in its edge and a shoulder formed on said edge, an arcuate bolt having a toothed hub rotative around the disk, a yoke straddling the disk and having a tooth on its inner edge for engagement against the shoulder or for engagement with the notch, said yoke having legs provided with ends entering between the teeth on the hub of the bolt a spring carried by the hub and operative to urge .the yoke toward the disk, a pin lock mounted on the housing and having a shaft carrying a gear adapted to mesh with the toothed portion of the hub, said gear being also operative to engage the ends of the legs of the yoke to thereby move the yoke away from the disk and thereby disengage the tooth on the yoke from engagement with the notch and QTI shoulder on the disk when said 3. 5. A lock having a housing, key-controlled means including a gear, a curved bolt having a hub engaged and rotated by the gear, a notched fixed element within the housing, a detent carried by the bolt hub and adapted for engagement-with the notched fixed element, spring means for urgingthe detent against the notched fixed element said detent being adapted to be engaged by the gear-and freed from engagement with the notched element by operation of the key-controlled means whereby the bolt can be rotatively moved to open or closed position without interefernce from the notched element.

A lock having a housing, a disk fixedly mounted therein, the disk having a peripheral edge formed with a shoulder anda notch, a yoke straddling the disk and rotative around the same and-slidable relatively to the disk, the yoke having spaced legs and a tooth located between the legs, spring means operative upon the yoke to urge the tooth thereof toward the peripheral edge of the disk, an arcuate bolt member having a toothed edge, the ends of the legs of the yoke being extended laterally to project between the teeth on the edge of the bolt member to thereby cause the bolt member and yoke to rotatively move together, said bolt member and yoke being mounted for rotation together around the disk, a pin lock carrying a mutilated gear for engagement with the toothed edge ofthe bolt member, said mutilated gear being at times operative against the lateral ends of the legs of the yoke to thereby, at such times, urge the yoke in a direction away from thenotched edge of the disk and out of engagement with the notch and shoulder.
