BROOM Filed April 29, 1953 I I l I Il .n' ...111,111,111 4 ATTOR NE YS United States Patent O BROOM Samuel C. Lay, Portland, Ind.
Application April 29, 1953, Serial No. 351,797
1 Claim. (Cl. 15-174) This invention relates to brooms, and is an improvement over the construction embodied lin my pending application Ser. No. 86,004, filed April 7, 1949, for Broom, now abandoned.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved broom construction which includes a tubular handle with a head lformed out of broom straw or other fibrous strands, and means for securing the head to the handle.
'In the embodiment of this invention as herein disclosed the handle is constricted at its lower end so as to ovalize the handle, and a pair of anchoring pins are projected from the oval portion of the handle into the head, so that the latter will be securely locked to the handle.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
`In th/e drawing:
Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation of a broom constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
IFigure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
IFigure 3 is a sectional view taken `on the line 3 3 of IFigure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view on an enlarged scale showing the manner in which the fibers of the head are cemented together.
Referring to the drawing the numeral designates generally an elongated tubular handle which is provided at its low-er end with a constricted portion 11. The constricted portion 1=1 is oval or elliptical in transverse section, the purpose for which will be hereinafter described. A lfibrous head generally indi-cated at 12 is secured to the lower portion of the handle 10 and is formed of a plurality of fibers 13 which at their upper portion are cemented or adhesively secured together as indicated at 14. -The head 12 is substantially oval or elliptical in transverse section with the long axis thereof parallel with the long axis of the oval `or constricted handle portion 11. The formation of the constricted lower end of the handle 10 in the conguration of an oval provides a means whereby the head 12 will be held against turning movement with respect to the handle 10. A ferrule generally indicated at 15 encompasses the upper portion of the head 12 and the lower portion of the handle 10. The ferrule of 15 is initially conical in configuration and is then Iflattened or ovalized so as to conform to the conliguration of the upper end of the head 12.
The ferrule of 15 is tightly bound to the head 12 by means of an oval or elliptical clamping ring 16. The
2,781,538 Patented Feb. 1,9, 1957 Vice ring 16 as shown in Figure 2 for-ms a constricted portion 17 on the ferrule 15 at a point above the lower large end thereof so that the ring 16 will be held against movement endwise `of the fermle 15.
The head 12 is also anchored or locked to the handle 10 by means of a pair of oppositely extending anchor pins 18 which extend through diametrically opposed openings 19 formed in the handle 10. The anchoring pins 18 project from a resilient bowed wire 20 which is disposed within the handle 1t) and projects upwardly above the openings 19. Initially the pins 18 before constriction of the handle `10 are substantially flush with the outer surface of the handle 10 but when `the handle is constricted or ovalized at its lower portion 11, the pins 18 will project outwardly through the openings 19. These pins 18 project into the adhesively held together fibers 13 and cooperate with the oval portion 1"1 of the handle 10 in not only holding the head 12 against turning movement with respect to the handle but also hold the head 12 against movement lengthwise of the handle 12.
In the assembly of the broom structure the head 12 with the adhesive 14 is mounted on the lower end of the handle 10. The handle 10 is initially constricted at its lower end with the anchoring pins 18 projecting outwardly through the openings 19. The pins 18 are adapted to engage in the initially plastic or pliable adhesive 14 so that when the adhesive sets the pins 18 will b.: firmly secured within the adhesive. The clamping ring 16 is then engaged about the ferrule 15 so as to tightly bind the lower large end of the ferrule about the embedded fibers 13.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A broom comprising a tubular handle formed with a hollow elliptical lower end, a iibrous head encompassing said lower end, adhesive means securing the fibers of the upper portion of said head together, a ferrule enycompassing the upper portion of said head and the lower end of said handle, said -lower end of said handle having a pair of diametrically opposed openings, a bowed resilient member disposed interiorly of the lower end of said handle, said resilient member extending axially of said handle, oppositcly projecting anchoring pins carried by said member extending outwardly through said openings and into said head, and a clamping ring engaging about said ferrule for tightly binding said ferrule to said head, said clamping ring being disposed in the vicinity of `said pins and compressing said head tightly against said pins.
