Description

(No Model.) l
- I'. M. HUNT.
FLY PAN.
Patented May 22,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. HUNT, OF ROUND OAK, GEORGIA.
FLY-FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,140, dated May 22, 1883.
Appnationnleanprnio,18ers. (Nomad.)
Vprovide certain improved means for imparting an oscillating motion to the fan-arms which carry the fan-sheets, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical sectional view of the same. y
The letter A indicates an upright box or casing, containing a train of cog-gearing, B, actuated by a spring, C, which rotates the driving-shaft D, the latter projecting and being squared at the end E, so that it may be wound by means of a suitable key.
The letter F indicates the usual ratchet and pawl to arrest backward movement ofthe shaft and permit winding.
The shaft ofthe upper cog-wheel of the train (indicated by theletter G) projects at each side, and to the ends are rigidly secured the plates H, which are provided with curved fingers I, as indicated. These plates are placed in op-v posite directions on the oppositesides of the apparatus, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
The letter I indicates a vertical shaft, mounted in suitable bearin gs in aframe, K, at the top of the apparatus. The said shaft projects above the top of the frame, and is provided with horizontal arms L, which carry the fansheets M. To the said vertical shaft is secured a horizontal wheel, having radial arms N, as indicated.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The train of gearing, being put in motion by means of the spring, will rotate the shaft G so as to carry the plates in the direction ot' the arrows. The ngers on the said plates will alternately engage the arms N, giving an oscillating movement to the fan.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
In a fly-fan, thc combination of the actuating-gearing located in a suitable casing, the plates carrying ngers, mounted 0n the upper shaft of said gearing, the vertical shaft carrying the fan, and having mounted upon it a wheel having radial arms, and actuated by the fingers of the plates to give an oscillating motion to the fan, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK M. HUNT.
