1 Claim. (Cl. 215-46) This invention relates to devices for removing conventional bottle caps of the type crimped over beads on the ends of necks of bottles, and in particular a comparatively small thin plate adapted to be crimped under the edge of a bottle cap and permanently secured in position thereby, and said plate having a thumb nail gripping portion by which the plate is pulled outwardly to pry the cap from the bottle extending downwardly therefrom and nested against the outer surface of the neck of the bottle.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for removing bottle caps wherein the removing means is supplied with each bottle so that the necessity of looking or hunting for a bottle cap remover or opener is obviated.
The conventional bottle cap, used primarily, for soft drinks, beer, and the like is crimped over a bead at the end of the neck of the bottle and a gasket secured to the inner surface of the cap provides a seal whereby the bottle is sealed until the cap is removed. With the conventional cap remover or bottle opener a prong or end section bears downwardly against the center of the cap as a prong or blade grips the edge of the crimped portion of the cap whereby the edge of the cap is bent upwardly breaking the seal and thereby making it possible to remove the cap. With such devices it is necessary to provide bottle openers in refrigerating cabinets for soft drinks and when cartons of bottles are carried to remote points, such as on picnics, conventional bottle openers are often overlooked and it i often difiicult to open bottles. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a bottle opener that is permanently installed under a bottle cap whereby the opener is in position continuously so that bottles may be opened even though conventional bottle openers are not available.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a bottle opener whereby an opener may be crimped under a bottle cap so that it remains in position until used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bottle opener adapted to be permanently attached to a bottle in which the opener nests against the outer surface of the neck of the bottle so that its presence on the bottle is not objectionable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bottle opener of the permanently attached type in which the opener is of a simple and economical construction so that it may be discarded after use.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a comparatively small plate having arcuate sections and having tapering edges converging from a flange at the top substantially to a point at the lower end wherein the flange at the top is formed to be inserted under the edge of a bottle cap with the body of the device nested against the outer surface of a bottle.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
2,781,142 F'atented Feb. 12, 1951 Figure 1 is a vertical section through the upper endof the neck of a bottle showing the improved bottle opener nested against the outer surface of the neck and with a flange at the upper end of the opener crimped under the edge of the bottle cap.
Figure 2 is a detail showing a perspective view of the improved bottle opener.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the opener.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the opener showing the opener positioned against the outer surface of a bottle, the bottle being shown in broken lines.
Figure 5 is a side elevational View showing the upper end of the neck of a bottle with a cap positioned thereon and illustrating the position of the bottle opener on the bottle with the upper end crimped under the cap and also showing the manner of gripping the opener with a thumb nail to pry the opener outwardly for removing the cap.
Figure 6 is a similar view showing the bottle cap partly removed.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved bottle opener of this invention include a plate 10 having a flange 11 with an arcuate recess 12 in the intermediate portion, formed on the upper end and having tapering edges 13 and 14 generally converging from the flange toward an arcuate section 15 at the lower end.
The plate is formed with a transversely disposed recess 16 that nests in an annular recess 17 below a bead 18 on the upper surface of a neck 19 of a bottle and from the recess 16 the lower portion of the plate bulges outwardly to correspond with the outer surface of an annular bulge 29 on the surface of the neck of the bottle. The plate, however, may be patterned to correspond with outer surfaces of bottles of difierent shapes.
The flange 11 of the upper end of the plate is also formed to correspond with the outer surface of the bead 18 and, as illustrated in Fig. 1 the device is installed as a cap, such as the cap 21 is crimped over the bead 18 at the upper end of the neck of a bottle, the flange 11 being positioned inside of the crimped edge of the cap. The cap is provided with the conventional sealing washer or gasket 22.
By this means the improved bottle opener of this invention remains in position continuously and when it is desired to open the bottle the lower tip of the device is gripped, such as by a thumb nail as shown in Fig. 5 and drawn outwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 6 whereby the edge of the cap is pried outwardly to break the seal so that the cap may be removed.
t will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
As a new article of manufacture, a container cap remover for use with a container of the type having a neck provided with an annular head on its upper end, there being an annular bulge below said bead on the neck of the container, there being an annular recess between said bulge and bead, a cap mounted on the top of said container and having a portion crimped over the bead on said neck, said cap remover being fabricated of a single piece of material and shaped to include a plate having a flange on its upper end, said flange being interposed between the crimped portion of said cap and said head, said flange being smooth on both its inner and outer surfaces, there being an arcuate recess in said flange intermediate the ends thereof, said recess extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof, said plate further including a central curved portion fitting snugly against said bulge and the side edges of said central portion tapering inwardly, said plate being provided with a transversely disposed recess snugly seated in the recess between said bead and bulge, the recess in said plate receiving a portion of the crimped section of the cap,:s'aid plate further including an arcuate section at its lower end positioned below said bulge for engagement bye persons fingers, said cantepiover adapted to be mounted on the containel without altering the shape or stl ucture of the container, said plate contacting approximately one fourth of the circumference of the neek'of the container throughout the length of the plate, said flange having a width approximately equal to the width of the central curved portion at the Widest point of the central curved portion.
