Description
GARMENT Shepard S. Saltzman, New York, N. Y., assignor to Piedmont Shirt Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of South Carolina Application September 10, 1954, Serial No. 455,185
1 Claim. (Cl. 2128) This invention relates to garments and more particularly concerns pajama coats or jackets, shirts and the like.
In the button up type of pajama coat or shirt, it is usual to provide double thickness material at the marginal portions to which the buttons are sewn. Despite the double thickness of material, and particularly when the material is of the lighter weaves of cotton and the like, there is a tendency for button failures after a relatively short period of wear. Thus, the buttons may pull away completely, or the fabric may tear adjacent the threads holding the buttons in place.
Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide an improved coat or shirt construction wherein the buttons may be subjected to substantial strains without breaking the thread securing the buttons or tearing the fabric adjacent such thread.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved garment construction of the character described, using light Woven fabrics of ordinary tensile strenth, together with reinforcing means in association with the button securing portions thereof, whereby the fabrics are capable of withstanding substantial stresses concentrated at the buttons.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved garment construction utilizing a high tensile :strength button strip which is readily and economically combined with fabric of ordinary tensile strength to pro 'vide a firm anchorage for buttons.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a garment embodying the invention, with portions cut away;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line l22 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a garment which may be the coat or jacket of pajamas, or a shirt, and the like. Such a garment includes a front panel 11 having a vertically extending marginal portion 12. The marginal portion is turned inwardly at edge 13 and is secured to a narrow backing strip 14 at an inturned edge thereof, by a seam 15 adjacent the inturned edge .16 of said backing strip. The strip 14 is usually formed nited States Patent 0 of the same material from which panel 11 is formed. Such materials may be of the conventional cotton or other fabrics having only ordinary tensile strength. The strip 14 may be hemmed at its other longitudinal edge, as at 17, the strip extending the entire length of marginal portion 12 and may also form a portion of collar 18.
A button strip 19 in the form of a narrow strip of closely woven fabric, is located between marginal portion 12 and backing strip 14, being secured to strip 14 by lines of stitching 20, 21. Strip 19 has a very high tensile strength and may be of the closely woven material known as aeroplane cloth.
A series of buttons 22 are sewn to the outer surface of marginal portion 12, adjacent edge 13 by high tensile strength nylon thread 23 which passes through strip 19 and backing 14, to firmly secure the same. It has been found that with the construction of the invention, the anchorage of the buttons is such as to withstand very substantial stresses which may be applied to the buttons. Furthermore, the fabric of marginal portion 12 and the backing 14 exhibit much greater resistance to tearing adjacent the thread 23.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided an improved garment construction, in which the several objects of the invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
Since various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein set forth, without departing from the spirit thereof, it is understood that all matter described or shown is to be deemed illustrative and not by way of limitation.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
A garment comprising a front panel including a marginal portion inturned along an edge, a fabric backing strip disposed rearwardly of said panel and having marginal portions inturned along each longitudinal edge thereof, the marginal edge of said front panel registering with the outer marginal edge of said backing strip and secured thereto, a continuous fabric strip located between said first mentioned backing strip and the opposed portion of said front panel and secured to said first mentioned backing strip, the longitudinal edges of said continuous fabric strip being disposed inwardly of and adjacent the edges of the inturned marginal portions of said backing strip, said continuous fabric strip having a closer weave and higher tensile strength than that of said front panel and backing strip, and at least one button sewn to said front panel and backing strip through said continuous fabric strip.
