Y., assignor to Rogers Importsplnc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of N ew York Application Augustlj, ,1954, SerialfNo. 450,344
3 Claims. (Cl. 150-1) The present invention relates to pouches. More particularly, the present invention relates to aliner for `particular use in a tobacco pouch, the liner including means for `preventing tobacco particles from being trapped 'between the liner and the outer cover :of the pouch.
The recent constructions of pouches, and 4particularly tobacco pouches, include a .rubber or simulated rubber liner that is secured within an outer ycover :of leather or like material. The inner liner is formed with antopen mouth which is .normally provided with-enlarged `or beaded edges, the .beaded Yedges being adapted :to Acoact and thereby provide an air-tight seal for the interior of the liner. The inner lliner is normally joined -to the outer leather cover vby. stitching 4or `seme similar means and a slide fastener sealing member is usually associated with the open portion of the outerzcoverrin 'order -to VLeiect a closure therefor. By moving the slide fastener to effect a closure of theeuter cover, the beadededg'es of the liner are thus broughtinto intimate `contaotrto effect the air-tight seal `of the pouch and thereby maintain the tobacco .contained therein 'in fresh condition.
Prior to the instant invention, the rinner liner'was normally fastened in the outer cover by stitching that extended around the body of the pouch, .but thed, stitclring terminated adjacent 'the end vv'here the slide fastener operator was located in normally open position and thus `an open portion was defined at the unfastened end of the pouch between the inner liner and outer cover. During a pipe filling operation, the tobacco particles had a tendency to fall through the opening between the inner liner and outer cover and as a result collected at the bottom of the pouch.
The present invention includes an inner liner formed of a flexible material such as rubber that is positioned in :an outer leather cover having an upper opening or mouth adapted to be closed by a slide fastener closure member, the inner liner being secured to the outer cover by stitching extending around the body of the pouch and adjacent the open upper end. In order to prevent to-` bacco particles from ltering between the unstitched portion of the liner and the outer cover, an outwardly extending tongue is molded on the end of the liner adjacent the mouth thereof and is folded over to provide a covering for the extreme end of the liner mouth. Thus, when the pouch is opened and tobacco withdrawn therefrom, such as in filling a pipe, the tongue will prevent tobacco particles from infiltrating between the liner and the outer cover.
a liner for a tobacco pouch that includes a tongue formed,
integrally and adjacent the mouth thereof.
Still another object of the present invention is toprovide a tobacco pouchthat includes a liner having an outwardly extending tongue formed adjacent one end ,ted States Patent thereof, the tongue being folded over to cover a portion ofthe open liner and thereby 4prevent tobacco from "ltering betweenthe iliner and theouter cover o'f the pouch.
Still another object `of the jpresent invention is to provide a liner having atongue formed on lone end thereof, the tongue beingpositi'oned beneath the slide ,fastener of the `outer cover of the pouch `and preventing the collecting of Atobacco `between thelinerand the 'outer cover of thepouch.

The inner liner 14 is formed of a molded rubber or plastic material and is provided with solid longitudinally extending beaded edges 30 and 32 shown in Fig. 4 at the upper end thereof, the beaded edges defining the mouth of the inner liner. The beaded edges are adapted to be moved into intimate contact when the slide fastener operator 28 closes the open mouth 22 of the outer cover 12. The mouth of the inner liner 14 is thereby sealed and an air-tight t is maintained between the beaded edges 30 and 32.
In order to secure the inner liner 14 in. the outer cover and with the slide fastener members 24 and 26 open, stitch line 34 is directed around the body of the pouch terminating adjacent the slide fastener operator 28 located in the open position, as shown in Fig. 2. Since the stitching 34 cannot be extended around the end adjacent the operator 28, an opening is defined between the inner liner In order to prevent tobacco particles from infiltrating through the opening between the innerliner 14 and the outer cover 12, the inner liner 14 is molded with an outwardly extending projection tab or tongue 38 shown particularly in Fig. 5. When the inner liner is positioned in the outer cover 12, the tongue 38 is folded over the open mouth of the inner liner 14, as shown in'dotted lines in Fig. 5 and thereby acts to seal the opening formed between the end of the inner liner 14 and the outer cover 12. With the tongue 38 shown in the folded position illustrated in and the outer cover. The tongue 38 thereby serves the purpose of preventing the collecting of tobacco particles Y at the bottom of the pouch between the outer cover 12 and the inner liner 14.
The inner liner 14 is formed in a relatively simple molding process, the tongue 38 being molded integrally with the liner body. The inner liner 14 is simply and quickly positioned within the outer cover 12 after the slide fastener members have been attached thereto and the stitch lines 34 are effected by automatic machinery to secure the inner liner within the outer cover. The tongue 38 is folded as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 tol complete the pouch assembly. During use of the pouch, when the slide fastener operator 28 is moved across the outer cover mouth 22, the complementary members 24 and 26 are closed to effect the closing of the pouch, the beaded edges 30 and 32 making intimate contact to form an air-tight seal. When tobacco is to be removed from the pouch, the slide fastener operator 28 is moved to open the complementary members 24 and 26, thereby opening the mouth ofthe inner liner. The tongue 38 remains in the position as shown in Figs. 2 and 5 in the opened position of the pouch and thus prevents the iniltration of tobacco particles between the outer cover 12 and the inner liner 14 when the tobacco is removed from the inner liner.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore the invention is not limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a tobacco pouch, an outer cover having a mouth formed along the upper portion thereof, an inner flexible liner secured in said outer cover and being of approximately the same size and shape as said outer cover, said inner liner having a mouth formed at the upper portion thereof communicating with the mouth in said outer cover, said outer cover and inner liner having a space formed therebetween at one end thereof, said inner liner having coacting beaded edges defining the edges of the mouth thereof, a closure device secured along the length of the mouth of said outer cover and adapted to close said outer cover mouth, thereby moving said beaded edges into intimate contact for effecting an airtight seal in said inner liner, and a tongue joined to said inner liner adjacent the mouth and at one end thereof, said tongue being folded over the mouth of said inner liner at the end thereof to form a seal between the liner interior and said space, particles of tobacco thereby being prevented from filtering between said inner liner and outer cover.
2. A flexible pouch comprising an outer cover having a mouth formed along the upper portion thereof, an inner liner of approxi-mately the same size as said outer cover secured in said outer cover, said inner liner and outer cover having a space formed therebetween at one end thereof, said inner liner being formed with an open mouth portion, a tongue integrally joined to said inner liner adjacent said space, said tongue being folded inwardly over the adjacent end of said inner liner mouth to form a seal between the liner interior and said space whereby to prevent the infiltration of particles between said outer cover and inner liner.
3. A tobacco pouch comprising a flexible outer cover having a mouth formed along the upper portion thereof, a' flexible inner liner of approximately the same size and shape as said outer cover secured in said outer cover, said inner liner and outer cover having a space formed therebetween at one end thereof, said inner liner having a tongue formed on the end thereof adjacent said space, said tongue being folded over the end of said inner liner to form a seal between the liner interior and said space, particles of tobacco thereby being prevented from inltrating between said inner liner and said outer cover.
