SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,560, dated May 15, 1883. I Application filed December 28, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. FOWLER, of Brooklyn, in Kings county and the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pails, Tubs, Kegs, Barrels, and like Articles, of which the following is a specification.

My improvements relate to pails, tubs, kegs, barrels, and analogous articles which are composed of a number of staves or strips held together by hoops or bands.

My invention consists in the combination, with the staves or strips of apail or analogous article which has a tapered exterior, of a hoop or hoops adapted to be forced along the same for the purpose of tightening the staves or strips, and a round Wire hoop fitting in a circumferential groove in said pail or article,and having its ends twisted together and driven into the pail or article, whereby the pail or article is retained in form even if the firstmentioned hoop or hoops drop off by reason of shrinkage.

This pail is represented as composed of a number of downwardly tapering wooden staves or strips, A, secured together near the upper and lower ends by ordinary flat metal hoops or hands, B, and near the middle by a hoop or band, 0, of round wire, fitting in a circumferential groove, a, in their exterior. The ends of this hoop O are secured together by being bent around each other, or twisted and then driven into the adjacent stave of the pail. It is obvious that even in the event of shrinkage or contraction in the wooden staves this hoop or band 0 will be retained in place so as to keep the parts of the pail together. The upper hoop or band, B, may be driven up to tighten it on the staves. is of-great advantage, because when it is flush with the outside of a pail it will fill a deep groove, and will have a greater hold upon the staves or strips, so that they could not fall apart even if the other hoops should drop off.

The round-wire hoop In applying the hoop U the pail, after the wire has been passed around it and While both ends are held under tension,may be turned to twist the Wires together. The wire is then cut offv and the ends are driven into the pail.

My improvement is not confined to pails, but may with advantage be embodied in tubs, kegs, casks, barrels, and like articles.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the staves or strips of a pail or analogous article which has a tapered exterior, of a hoop or hoops adapted to be forced along the same for the purpose of tightening the staves or. strips, and a roundwire hoop fitted in a circumferential groovein said pail or article and having its ends twisted togetherand driven into the pail or article, whereby the pail orarticle is retained in form even if the first-mentioned hoop or hoops drop off by reason of shrinkage, substantially as specified.
