SPECIFICATION forming part Letters Patent No. 277,253, dated May 8, 1883.

To all whom 'it muy concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT D. FIELD, of Golumbus,in the county of Franklin and VState ot Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in interior furnishings, and more particularly to curtain-poles, the object of the invention being to provide a device ot' this character Vwhich shall be adapted to be adjusted to t windows of different widths, which shall combine simplicity of construction and ease of operation with durability and efficiency in use, which shall constitute a very ornamental feature of interior decoration, and which shall be adapted to he manufactured and supplied to the trade at a comparatively light cost.

Wi th these objects in view my invention consists in certain details ot' construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter de scribed, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a curtain-pole embodying my invention and having a. curtain depended from it. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of one end of the pole. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of a modification of my improvement. Fig. 4 is a view of another modication thereof, and Fig. 5 is a plan view, showing my improved curtainpole in combination with an adj ustahle cornice.

A represents the central section of the curtain-pole, being preferably formed from wood 5 but metal or other suitable material may be employed, it' desired. Tubes B, located on the opposite ends ot' the said central section, are designed to be longitudinally adjusted thereon to vary the length of the pole in accommodating it to windows of different widths. The said tubes may be made of metal, wood, paper, or other desirable material. Their ornamentation, if any is employed, will depend upon the character of the material entering into their construction, and also upon the effect which it is desired that the complete fixture shall produce. They are provided with elongated horizontal slots C, adapted to receive pins D, located in the' ends of the central section, A. These pins fulfill a threefold function, in that they guide the tubes while being adjusted, they prevent them from being entirely disengaged from the ends of the central section, and 5 5 they lock the tubes in positions of permanent adjustment, the last-named results being effected by detlecting them into slots F, leading out of the slots C at right angles.

Brackets G, of any desired form and con- 6o struction, and adapted to be secured to the wall or to the window-easement, -are provided with holes LI, to receive the tubes B, which fit snugly within them.

It will be observed that each end of the pole 6 5 has two adjustmentsone adjustment of the '.tnbcs in the brackets and another adjustment of the central section in the tubes. Orna mentalvknobs I are secured to the ends of the tubes to give the xtures the usual nish. 7a

In Fig. 3 of the drawings a modification of the tubes B is shown. It consists in the association of several tubes, the same being arranged to telescope. The advantage of this form over that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings 75 is that a more extended field of adjustment is obtained.

Another modification of the tubes is shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings, the same being provided with an open instead of a closed slot. 8o

Fig. 5 of the drawings shows one of my ad jnstable curtain-poles in combination with an adjustable cornice ot' any approved construction. The tubes B of the pole are rigidly secured to the returns of the extensible Wings of 85 the cornice, the adjustment ot' the pole being simultaneous with and effected by the adjustment ofthe cornice.

I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown 9o and described, but that I hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I 9.5 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with brackets or supports, ot' an adjustable curtain-pole, consisting of a central section and extensible tubes 10o (one or more) secured to the ends of the centrai section and adapted to be adjusted thereon, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with supp'orting-braclv ets, of an adjustable curtain-pole, consisting of a central section and extensible tubular end sections (one or more) adapted to be adjusted in the brackets and on the central section, sub.

stantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with supporting-brackets, ofan adjustable curtain-pole, consisting of a central section and extensible tubular end sections (one or more) adapted to beadjusted in the brackets and on the central sections, said tubes being provided with horizontal slots,- Within which engage pins attached to the central section, substantially as set forth.

4. In an adjustable curtainpole, the combination, with a central section, of extensible
